"What If...?"

^right, but Deanna told "Thomas" about how Commander Riker got promoted for his actions on that mission (which technically applies to Thomas as well). It wasn't a throwback line, but about how it got Riker to end their relatiohship.

But does she specify that it was the reason he was promoted to Commander? He could have ended their relationship as a Lt.Cmdr. as well, and then, later on he received his promotion to Commander.

Yes, it was made clear Riker was promoted to Lt. Commander for his actions on that mission. I watched that episode a couple weeks ago. Riker made Commander sometimes between that and becoming the first officer aboard the Enterprise. We never learn how he made a full commander...at least not on TV or the movies. No idea if it was addressed in the novels or not.

Well, but then that prooves my point. Thomas Riker, if he is to get the same promotion as Will Riker did for his actions on the planet, would become a Lieutenant-Commander rather than a Commander.
So somebody else would likely have become First Officer of the Enterprise, and as I said I find Data to be the most likely candidate, with Lt.-Cmdr. Thomas Riker taking his old position on OPS.

From the Starfleet Arbitration Committee on Personnel Disputes
To Thomas William Riker, Lazon II Labour Camp, Cardassia
Concerns Allegedly withheld promotion to Lt. Commander for heroic deeds on Nervala IV

Dear Mr. Riker,

The Committee has received and reviewed your case, and has come to the decision that no promotion should be awarded to you for your supposed valor on Nervala IV. First of all, this request should have been submitted within five years of the supposedly withheld promotion. Secondly, these deeds have already been recognized and awarded with a promotion to William T. Riker, which, in a sense is you. To hand out this reward twice to effectively the same person would be a form of undue favoritism. Finally, considering your membership in the Maquis and your acts of terrorism in that capacity, the Committee is unwilling to make an exception for your case, so we're sorry to inform you our decision is final.

The Starfleet Arbitration Committee on Personnel Disputes

P.S.
A personal note from me as spokesperson on behalf of the Committee. Reasons for withholding promotions may not always obvious to the person concerned, though they usually are to the commanding staff and the Committee. For example, a few months ago, we dealt with a case of a recently promoted Lieutenant jg. complaining that as an Ensign, he had received no promotion in seven years for reasons unclear to him, until he got a new commanding officer. After looking into it the Committee concluded that his former commanding officer had a remarkable insight in judging human character, and had been correct in withholding his promotion, even though there there was nothing obviously wrong with his record. For that reason, the Committee decided to revert his recent promotion and demote him back to Ensign. So count yourself lucky we're not doing that!

Yours truly,
Vice Admiral K. Janeway.

What if Picard had said: "I see five lights." before the others came to free him? Why would it matter?

What if Wesley hadn't said anything and Picard had beamed the Indians by surprise and sent them to whatever planet they were supposed to be sent to?

What if Picard had come back in time soon enough to save his nephew and put Soran in the brig (long enough to thwart his plans) instead of a point in time when he was ridiculously overmatched? (He wouldn't even have needed to bother Kirk).

Madred would have thought he had won, and Picard would have to live with it.

It probably would caused a ripple effect to the actions of the Maquis. No way to predict.

The promotion scene may not have happened (he'd have to go further back than that), and the Enterprise may not have been in the position to encounter Soran.... but again, the crew would have listened to him and gone to the observatory and had him arrested. The D would have survived and we wouldn't have the E.

What if K'Ehleyr had told Worf that she was pregnant with Alexander?

What if... Data discovered he really wasn't alone in the universe after finding out about the colony of androids from "I, Mudd"?

What if that Zalkonian of Transfigurations would have decided to stay on board with his new found friends for just one week after his evolutionary jump was complete? I mean, the battle of Wolf 359 probably wouldn't have occurred and those 11,000 lives and 39 ships would have been saved...

The circumstances on the Zalkonian homeworld would have to be different (less dire, etc), for him not to leave right away. But then, they wouldn't have bumped into him...

What would the Borg done if he beamed aboard the Borg cube? Disconnected them all and served the Borg link.....? It might have put the Federation at more risk because the Queen would realize something was up and sent more ships. Boom, more deaths and destruction.

I got one.

What if it was the Enterprise that that the sphere uploaded to, and Pike and Spock had to take it to the future...instead of the Discovery with Saru and Burnham?

It would be something completely different. Even the 32nd Century would look different. Kirk would have gotten a different command, and probably wouldn't have become the legend he became...due to Spock's absence. It also may mean the Klingon Empire falls in 2393 without Spock suggesting helping them out... The Romulans may be more of a big baddie for the 24th Century.

They may be no Enterprises with a bloody A, B, C, D or E. There might be a Galaxy class, but it wouldn't be named Enterprise. Maybe it would be a Discovery D.
