This was why I was so glad they didn't have the character in most of the 1st season. She is fine in small doses but is incredibly annoying. I hope she doesn't have a large role is season 2.

Is there anything left from the anime for Season 2 after this season is over, or is it going to be entirely new stuff?

 

There is plenty to still explore.

 

I'm guessing Faye's backstory, how Spike and Jet teamed up, all of Ed's arc, and the movie plot involving a new main antagonist. Also bounty plots we didn't see this series. We might not have seen the last of Julia either. Vicious, who knows?

 

OK, cool.

 

I would say this though. What they did in s1 and where they ended s1. I don't see enough out there for multiple future seasons. I see it as basically another season to finish off the story unless they drastically pad the thing.

 

Ey* is meant to be annoyingly hyperactive. Ey reminds me very much of Pippi Longstocking from books I had to read in childhood.

I think two seasons would be enough, maybe three at most. The ending should be bittersweet. The main three characters are tragic, trapped by their past and unable to move on. To give them a happy ending would be sappy.

* This pronoun seems appropriate for where I think they'll go with the character.

 

So is that character non-binary then? I was never sure in the anime what gender they were supposed to be.

 

Wait when was Ed supposed to be not a girl?

 

Ed is a girl in the anime, but it's pretty much irrelevant. It's mentioned in passing at the end of Ed's debut episode, and there's one episode where Ed acts vaguely curious about Faye's makeup and such, but generally Ed acts like a child, without any gender-specific behaviors.

The actor they've cast in the Netflix show is non-binary, going by they/them. But in this interview, they refer to Ed as she/her, so presumably they'll be playing her as female.

FWIW, in the link @Commander Troi posted the person playing Ed themselves refers to the character as she.

Here's my review of the show.

 

I presumed Ed's choice was to be gender-neutral. As for what pronoun the actor uses, it need not be what the show runners prefer to use. Adopting pronouns such as they/them/their or the ey/em/eir variant would likely only confuse or alienate viewers anyway and might make translation difficult - although some languages have pronouns that are intrinsically gender-nonspecific.

Never presume what someone else's pronouns are. It's their choice, not yours. There are non-binary people who choose to go by he or she, and that's their right.

Nonsense. There are already plenty of characters in current media who go by they/them, such as Adira in Star Trek Discovery, Double Trouble in She-Ra, a lot of characters in Steven Universe, and Echo in my own Tangent Knights trilogy. They/them seem to have been settled on in recent years as the preferred gender-neutral pronouns, and nobody seems to worry about "confusing" anyone anymore. If you don't want people to be confused by something, the best thing to do is to get them used to it.

We'll need to wait and see what season 2 does with the character - assuming that it gets made.

 

He does have a point though. More and more shows lately have been featuring non-binary characters who use they/them as their pronouns lately, and other than the usual bigoted fuckwads, it hasn't been a problem. And you know what, if it does confuse some people, that's their problem, and the people making the show shouldn't let their ignorance stop them from including the characters they want to include.

 

Until/unless we're told otherwise, the character of Ed is a cishet female child; the actor playing her here is not.
