Loved the anime. I own way too many copies of it. lol -- I really enjoyed this show and watched with an open mind. My only nitpicks were some things at the end, but overall, loved seeing these actors be cool around each other.

I enjoyed the Hell out of this. Not familiar with the anime, I sampled the first episode to get a taste, but nothing beyond that. Love the genre-bending setting. Noir Buddy cop/martial arts/ scifi/gangster action. The character grew on me and were well acted. Each had an interesting back story.

The VHS tape could have been Betamax for added comedic value. Still got episodes 9 and 10 to go as I'm pacing myself. At least one rewatch will be required to spot all the Easter eggs. The series is number 4 on Netflix in the UK at the moment so I hope it gets renewed. It looks quite expensive but they will at least be able to take advantage of all the existing assets. I did think John Noble was sorely underused.

In the original, it was. I just saw that episode today. (And it was amusing to see a character in the 2070s talk about how "they didn't record video on discs like we do today." Discs are already becoming obsolete now.)

Oh, and the hyperspace experiment that blows up the Moon and devastates the Earth? That's happening next year. I didn't realize we were so close to it. I wonder, does the live-action show push the chronology further forward, since the original dates don't really work anymore?

I know, and I was simply pointing out one that I recognized that you didn't include.

If it had them, would Spike even bother to use them?

They pushed it forward a century.

I’m hoping in season 2 there is at least a vague reference to Space Dandy, it takes place in the same world as Cowboy Bebop and had the refrigerator with the mutated rock lobster make an appearance.

^Badum tish. Good one. Spike doesn't seem overly concerned about health and safety in any case.

That is not rude. That's just an opinion.

BTW, is this a Spoiler or not Spoiler discussion? Because I see people mentioning which episode who shows up and to some that might be spoilerific.

I watched the first three episodes and while the cast is good some of the dialog is trying too hard to be banter-city and rings rather generic in my ears. The one thing I really appreciated about the original is that it often wasn't afraid to have the characters shut up and just let mood be.

Not a spoiler, but the old "bang the thing until it works" bit hasn't been funny or clever in decades.

I don't think Jet banging the shutter to get it to close is meant to be particularly comedic - just to show how dilapidated the Bebop is. I've tried to avoid spoilers but it's difficult. I don't think it's a spoiler to state that none of the main characters give long technobabble speeches about how the technology works. Probably Ein understands it best and he ain't telling.

I’m enjoying it. Haven’t seen the anime so I don’t have anything to compare it to.

I'm on the fourth episode, that feels like what they're going for with Jet having a daughter and Vicious being more explored. Not sure I'm a fan of it, I liked the mystery and ambiguity behind Spike/Vicious past but it is a different interpretation.

This scene looked a bit cringey on twitter, but it was fine while watching to be honest.

I'm enjoying it. I've watched 4 episodes so far, and I'm balancing that with watching a couple of episodes of the anime at the same time. Sad to say that I haven't really watched the anime before.

While I like the overly stylized direction of the live action, I feel it's lost a bit of the noir-ish parts of the anime. Particularly in its adaptation of the opening story from the anime. It didn't have the same noir impact in live action. I shan't say more cause spoilers, sweetie.

I thought the same. Found it amusing anyway.

I've been meaning to do a longer rewatch of the anime since it's been years to compare but I don't think you're off-base here.

Having now completed the entire 10 episodes some thoughts. Non-spoiler first. Daniellla Pineda's performance as Faye is outstanding. She really lights up the scenes she is in. The three mains are all actually pretty good and I'm trying to evaluate and not compare to the anime versions in that regard.

    Now as to the episodes
Wow. They really shifted things around a lot. Some of the plots used were pulled from much later in the series and the Syndicate stuff makes up a really huge portion of the ongoing storyline that doesn't really happen as much until the latter end of the anime. Vicious doesn't even execute the elders until there's like 2 or 3 episodes left and it leads into the finality of the series. Here it's something that happens in the 'first' season.

Also Julia putting Vicious as a puppet in chains is not something that happened at all in the series. She also doesn't shoot Spike out the window. The church window thing happens in the anime, but it's very different. Spike is fighting Vicious and Spike as Vicious forces him thru the window chucks a grenade back into the room.

Of course in the anime Julia doesn't stay with Vicious. She and Spike separate and both go into hiding. She doesn't remain behind and stay with Vicious. So in terms of changing that aspect, her having lived as Vicious' possession for the last 3 years makes sense that she may try to then cage him and get revenge in that way.

Oh and the final scene from episode 10 of this netflix series
    .. Ed... Ed. Ed. Ed.

Oh boy. This was going to be a very impossible to adapt personality and style to live action and yea. I'm not super optimistic with that short scene.
