Star Trek Discovery Leaving Netflix For Paramount+ Internationally, season 4 global launch in 2022

People also said that CBS All access would fail and Discovery would be cancelled because no one would pay for it. Obviously it is Paramounts best interest to be in as many countries as possible eventually and I'd imagine there are ton of negotiations going on as we speak.

 

I know this sucks for overseas fans, and I sympathize, but let's try and keep some perspective. No one was murdered by the "unfeeling psychopaths" at CBS. No crime was committed. It's a temporary inconvenience, not great suffering. Take the hyperbole down a notch or ten.

 

You can be legally right, and still be morally wrong. I wouldn’t call them psychopaths, but businesses are not people, so they’re certainly unfeeling because they’re motivated by money, not by what people think about them. And for many people, it’s not necessarily temporary, either. As others have mentioned, it’s potentially years before Paramount+ comes to their countries, so they’re very much feeling like the rug has been pulled out from under them. Try and put yourself in our shoes, where you’re looking forward to the new season, getting really excited, only to be told hours before that you have to wait (potentially years), but the precious American audience will get to watch.

 

I've been in this situation before where a favorite show of mine becomes unavailable due to streaming rights issues (the newest season of the Paramount Channel but not Paramount+ show Yellowstone is a current example), as has everyone else here at one time or another I'm sure, so I've already walked in their shoes. I already said I'm sympathetic to the situation and feel bad for the people affected, but that doesn't mean I'm going to sign on to every bit of over-the-top language about it.

 

Also it means that visiting this site and others like it becomes a spoiler filled minefield.

 

Don't often post here, but here's my pennys worth.
I 100% won't be waiting 4 months for this show, and 100% won't be paying for any more streaming services.

OK, no need to be hyperbolic and call them psychos, but I certainly think the decision was very, very thoughtless and shambolic on ViacomCBS's part, and us having myriad streaming services instead of mostly Netflix and Amazon Prime is anti-consumer.

By not swallowing their pride and taking a hit with Netflix, etc, the other media companies entering late to the game with their own streaming venues are taking us back to the dark ages of cable and satellite TV with too many rival streaming venues and only so much content, eyes, or wallets. Plus with the long-ish delay or non-existence of Paramount+ in most countries, it's no wonder DSCO will get pirated up the ass worldwide now (a self-fulfilling prophecy for the ViacomCBS suits who wanted tighter control of their show).

Nat. Amusements/ViacomCBS last year deciding on splitting their content on two streaming services in NA was deemed pretty stupid by business analysis:



Unluckily Star Trek got stuck with the dunderheads of the new streaming world.

If Paramount+ was quietly rolled out in the past 6 months as part of Amazon Prime's package in the UK, etc, and you could watch Discovery now by submitting to adds or another paywall (like IMDb's service and others) it'd be skeevy and awkward, but would've made more business sense....

 

I refuse to watch anything illegally. It's just not what I do. One of the reasons is that I don't trust illegal viewing, there's always the chance of malware, virusses or whatever. Second is, I feel that the industry needs supporting as well. I've been called naive when it comes to, so be it.
So yeah... No more Star Trek Discovery for me I suppose. I'll think about Paramount+ when I know what content the Dutch version will have.

One thing I've noted is that many US based people keep telling non-US people to absolutely get a certain streaming service because there's awesome stuff on there, however they often forget that content isn't the same throughout the world. Hell, my German ex could watch things on her Prime I couldn't on mine. She lives an hour from me. Dutch Netflix for example may have rights to certain movies for a while that Paramount+ might not get on launch. Works the othey way around as well. US Disney+ didn't have either Infinity War or Endgame when it was launched, because I think Netflix still had right, while Dutch Disney+ did.

So yeah, I'll wait and see what they can offer untill I subscribe.

 

I may as well buy the bumper blu ray boxset for DSCO, but malware and awkwardness with VPNs aside, loads of people will not want to be subjected to ViacomCBS' shoddy, selfish business strategy and take the plunge elsewhere.

Disney's falling out with Netflix and the rolling out of Disney+ was already awkward enough, and the Paramount+ sluggish roll out is already off to a bad start with the piss poor gesture of ViacomCBS swiping DSCO off Netflix abruptly in front of millions of people (even Disney+ with its more solid content is hitting a wall with the continued expansion of subscribers, the worldwide adoption of Paramount+ will more possibly be a dismal failure).

 

Let us not overreact. A boycott will only harm all parties. The best option for viewers right now is to watch DSC in every way possible and that fact is not morally questionable in any way. Apart from the fact that Netflix financed the first season of DSC with our money, according to the then authorities of CBS, sooner or later we will watch the current season as subscribers of some form of P+.

 

I'm not even super mad at ViacomCBS having a long term strategy of "consolidating" streamed Trek in some fashion eventually, though most people are rightfully deriding ViacomCBS for going about it in a very hurried, selfish, and even antagonistic way (that it'd semi-permenantly dent the commercial success of Star Trek shows on streaming for years to come).

 

Not exactly a failure since Netflix still pays them for oversea viewers for disco. This screw up is going to be a lot worst because most of the world has no option to see it so they have to go one method.

 

If you seen the map in the first post it’s not a temporary inconvenience for most of the world since CBS doesn’t have the know how and money to go whole world like Netflix. This is no crime other than losing viewership which will piss off their shareholders. Star Trek fans will of course have to go one route due to this stupid mistake.

 

Actually torrents is outdated there are some sites that actually stream the episodes for free but you have to register for their account which can be done with any email address.

It sucks but Disney does have the know how and capital to go overseas, not as good as Netflix so there are some sites that steam Disney plus series because there is no Disney plus for certain countries. But that’s the risk for going solo.

 

Not going to happen with Star Trek fans who watch season 1 on Netflix despite the huge amount of backlash and bashing we get for supporting disco since season 1. CBS clearly doesn’t care about Star Trek fans going down their route for their oversea deployment. Even the most Optimistic nations getting their app still have to wait for months for season 4 and that’s the most lucky fans. The rest has to wait for years or non at all. Well if they don’t want those fans money the fans will watch it and doesn’t care about CBS since CBS doesn’t care about Star Trek fans.

 

What was the timeframe Discovery Season 3 showed up on home video markets? Either Bluray or digital download via iTunes, etc?
Could that be the more reliable outlet for many people now for season 4 and forward?

 

And even them we see Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ having their growing pains and setbacks (with ViacomCBS sorely lacking Disney's IPs and marketing, Netflix's massive headstart and universal adoption, Amazon's endless resources and patience, etc).

They've just made bellend's of themselves in front of the eager media pirates, angry fans/consumers, and better established media rivals....

 

They would have to strike out on their own eventually.
