How The U.S.S. Excalibur Was Destroyed

But surely the Mutara Nebula is no worse than the galactic barrier in WNMHGB. And if the TV show was comfortable with Gary Mitchell, Charlie Evans, Trelane, and Apollo, it would hardly draw the line at a dense cloud full of static discharge.
TMP tried to go a bit more sci with it's fi. I wasn't referring to the series, which had plenty of nonsense like ion storms and the like.

Having now seen The Menagerie, Part 1, it's most likely that M-5's attack ruptured Excalibur's baffle plates, bathing the crew in lethal amounts of delta rays. That would leave the ship intact but kill the crew.

That also assumes, though, that baffle plates are "Starship" equipment, not something more likely found on older or smaller types of vessels. I don't believe the term is ever used with regard to Enterprise, nor is she referred to as having an "energy pile" like Antares. The Starship Republic 1371 did have "atomic matter piles," but the absence of that terminology for Enterprise gives it the feel of an older technology.

Pike's accident as shown in DISCO appears to occur on a fairly modern vessel of the time. Perhaps "baffle plates" is a term that fell out of favor but refers to something still in use?

I have no idea about anything on that show, but in "The Menagerie" the vessel on which Pike was injured was referred to as "old."

Well, if it's both an old vessel and one where the Engineering section looks relatively similar to Discovery's, that could imply that engineering tech didn't change much in the meantime.

Of course, the Enterprise refit was state of the art(?) during TMP but reduced to training vessel status by TWOK.

And we never learn why Kirk would have missed this chatter. We have to speculate in order to cover that angle, and saying "Uhura was in on it, too" is basically as workable as saying "there never was any chatter, the accident was two days ago, and the fake Mendez is telling Talosian lies when only our heroes are within earshot".

In other words, the writers never figured out that one, and our attempts at covering it are all gonna be conspiracy theories of one sort or another. Which of course goes well with the idea that the whole story is about a lie within a lie...

Or then the engine room of the Discovery, doubling for Pike's fateful one, is utterly antiquated, and the only thing new aboard NCC-1031 is the shuttlebay floor.

Oops, ninja'ed. But never mind:

Or then the refit merely brough it (almost) apace with the rest of the fleet. The Reliant looks the same inside and out, and apparently was in service during "Court Martial" already...
