Spoilers Prodigy ship revealed

Yeah, I think the Franklin was a testbed for the NX-01, maybe originally the NX-Epsilon or NX-0.5 or NX-F (if they are using a phonetic alphabet for pre-numerical registry). Just like Edison and his crew, it was later polished up and tossed into the new peaceful, exploratory Star Fleet, even though that's not what it was built for. The NX-326 registry just shows us how many old ships they re-registered for official use, and the "Freedom class" may have been a new moniker for what was previously "NX testbeds."

I like to think the NX class was renamed. Perhaps to the novelverse Columbia class, or perhaps to something else.

One is not like the other =D.

I can't remember the first time the term was actually spoken onscreen (I'm fairly sure the NX-01 didn't have a dedication plaque) but the intent was always there.

Mentioned upthread. Two instances in the early "Fortunate Son", one in the third-season "E2". And as also mentioned, the plaque didn't have a class identity, only ship identity. That's not indicative of much of an intent.

In this time frame, NX is a class name, just like any other.

Well, just unlike any other, which is sorta the point: we never hear any Starfleet give its ships or classes names like that. And we hear this Starfleet use the Neptune name. And the NX name. And just possibly the Triton name, although probably not. So it's not as if we would be on a particularly sure footing either way.

And the Intrepid in ENT is described as an Intrepid-class Earth starship so yeah, the NX-class may be the only Earth vessel outside freighters and training ships that uses a letter designation for its class name.

...Oh, if she only were. We'd have the weight of statistics on the side of "conventional" naming then.

Alas, the Intrepid in the actual episodes is just the Intrepid. The Columbia is just the Columbia, too, and the other ships are nameless nobodies.

The novels make the Intrepid an Intrepid class ship, and then kill off the Columbia but make her sisteroids Columbia class ships for some reason. But that's just the novels.

Dauntless class. (NX-01-A, remember?)

None of the Earth Starfleet vessels other than the NX class were given class names. The CGI models weren't even labeled with names or registry numbers. The only class name mentioned in dialogue was the Neptune class survey ship, and the only thing we know about it is that it has the same captain's chair as the NX-01.
