Spoilers Cerritos captain

why wouldn't Ransom get command? I mean he is the First officer after all and he should be made acting captain

This is certainly true. But remember, Riker was probably the most qualified person to lead the Enterprise in "Chain of Command", and he was passed over.

I guess it will depend on if the show can line up a suitable guest star...

Riker was "passed over" because Jellico -- the assigned mission commander -- was a raging, micro-managing egoist who probably blackmailed Necheyev into giving him the "big chair" by refusing to take the mission at all if she didn't.

In the RW, Riker would have been promoted to CO and been in charge of running the Enterprise, and Jellico would have exercised broad authority over the mission (mainly negociations with the Cardassians) and some "soft authority" to recommend the changes he tried -- and almost certainly failed -- to ram through as Captain.

Exactly. Riker would have had the Enterprise ready for battle, but would have worked within the ship's normal and established way of doing things. Had the Enterprise actually had to fight under Jellico's command, the crew would have been fatigued because of the change to their schedules and inefficient because the modified shifts (especially the ere-nonexistent Delta watch) weren't used to working together.

There are certainly types of people Jellico worked well with. Data, capable of taking orders with little question, got his chance at first officer. And Worf got to play with explosives, which he doubtless enjoyed. But Jellico didn't have a ship of Datas and Worfs, did he?

Earlier in the episode when Freeman was going to be transferred off the Cerritos, she told Ransom that he wasn't going to be made Captain. I don't see why that would change just because Freeman has now been arrested and is facing court-martial. The Cerritos needs a Captain, and Starfleet likely already chose a replacement Captain. The only thing that's changed is that the new Captain is replacing someone who has been arrested as opposed to someone who transferred off to a better and more prestigious command.

Which Mariner is going to disrupt due to fighting like crazy to get her mom back. Subtlety is not her strong suit...
Maybe she's already disrupted it. Perhaps Freeman's supposed promotion was all part of the plan, and Natuner ruined it by spilling the beans publicly about it before it was supposed to be known. Of course, then she will just screw up a second time as you suggest.

And Deanna got to dress like a Starfleet officer!

Feature a different Captain each episode until Freeman returns. Start with Captain Boday, whose transparent skull allows phaser beams to pass harmlessly through it. Or render it opaque somehow which cripples his ability to command. (Voiced by Kurtwood Smith).

Next up: an ECH straight out of the box, special delivery, which is actually an Emergency Culinary Hologram mistakenly sent to the ship instead.

I could see them bringing Jellico back. Just seems like too good to not go there. Or go deep cut and get a character from the TNG episode "Lower Decks."

Harry Kim would be cool, but that would be a twist for him to make it to captain while Paris is still a lieutenant. So I could see Tuvok getting the nod before Harry.

Tom Riker, though its out there as a choice. Jonathan Frakes is already working with the Lower Decks crew and this would give them a chance to tie up the loose string of Tom Riker's fate. I see Wesley as another out there choice.

Other choices that come to mind: M'Ress, Arex, Sulu (Hikaru or Demora), Chekov, Uhura, Saavik. Liked the suggestions of Calhoun and Lefler.

I'm hoping Worf is captain of the Enterprise-E. And I'm holding out hope for a Captain Worf series (on the Enterprise-E or F) or a long arc in Picard Season 2 or 3.

A thought just came to me...what if it's Will Boimler? What if he did something so heroic on Titan that he gets a promotion and becomes Cerritos's new captain?
