That once you get past the characters' prolonged staring at special effects to fill time, The Motion Picture is a passable film. Granted it took me time to come to that conclusion and required concentrating more on the lesser drama and dialogue parts through repeated viewings.
But perhaps the biggest one between myself and perhaps a newer generation of fans is that anything after Voyager is basically non-Trek and I personally don't consider it canon, especially the aptly initialized STD.

Really? A newer generation of fans? Are you referring to those who grew up on the Kelvin-verse movies, or perhaps even those who started watching in 2017?
Or are you referring to the segment of the fanbase who grew up with first-run TNG through ENT and consider that era of the franchise to be the "one true Star Trek" - anything beforehand seen as not quite so good and anything afterwards an unbridled heresy!
Because that segment of fandom is now 20+ years old and therefore the previous generation

Yes, it is interesting to see these party lines being drawn, as it were. I mean, I am hardly a "newer generation" give that I started with TOS, regarded TNG as passable as Trek and didn't care for VOY or ENT and only engaged with DS9 after "Trial and Tribble-ations." ENT is just as canon as VOY. And don't give me that "separate timeline created by FC" stuff that some fans like to use to dismiss ENT as not connected to the previous series and films. The idea that Trek canon stopped in 2001 is laughable and even though there are things I don't like about, say, STID, DSC or even PIC that I haven't liked from Day One of each they're still canon and official Trek.
I didn't like TNG from day one. When does that stop being canon? I really wish it would stop.
Most of TNG Season 1 ought to be shot out a cannon. Mediocre Trek is mediocre but if it was produced and aired or released in a theater it's official.

I guess I'm a "newer generation" fan because I'm only 22. But the way I've come to understand it is arguing over what is canon and what is not in Star Trek is borderline nonsense because even official Star Trek media doubles back on its own established canon. From day one they made it up as the shows went along.
As long as people enjoy it and you're having fun, why should it matter what's part of the timeline and what's not? Just let people enjoy things they like, it's not hard.

Seriously, I completely agree. Trek to me is more about making a fun world, not a serious philosophical exploration of life and death. When I think of Trek I think of dressing up in a red shirt, running around with a flashlight and playing with friends, building models, playing with action figures, and creating new ships in Paint. Have fun with your fandom!
To me, ST:ENT has always been canon, it may have it's existence created by "First Contact", but that doesn't make it any less valid of a ST series IMO.
Even DISCO, SNW, LDS, PIC are all canon IMO.
I've found a way to merge them into the greater ST canon.
Yes even Michael Burnhams time jumping into the 32nd century is used as canon, which I will use to fix Trek's new future in my 26th Century head canon. =D
Yes! Star Trek is what you make it. If you're a stickler about what the creators wanted and follow the good word of Roddenberry, good for you! If you're not and don't care about that kind of stuff, that's also cool! For me, I care way more about the characters and their interactions with each other than the actual plotline of episodes. I love creating art and writing stories, expanding on the Star Trek universe, and adding my own personal touches. It's fun for me, and I don't care if other's don't feel the same, because that doesn't matter in the end. If I'm having a good time, why should I care what someone else thinks?
I'm one of those weird ones who decide for themselves what is canon and what isn't.
I watch the episodes I like or want to for some reason.
Head full of holes.
