Poll Dune (2021) Spoiler/Rating Thread

So you want movies to reflect the world at it’s dingiest and ignore all the bright stuff? You’re narrowing reality into a little niche that you personally enjoy. That’s a completely subjective take and not reflective of reality at all. Look, say you like gray. No one’s going to debate you on that except to give their own opinion. Don’t try to make your opinion a singular universal truth.

True enough. But, it's not what I want in a film at this point in my life. That might change. But not right now. Mileage will vary

 

I dig what you guys are saying. I live in Phoenix AZ. I've lived here for almost 40 years. I've been to Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon and all over AZ and UT many times. It can be very colorful. I was NOT trying to be sarcastic or put you guys down - I was genuinely asking. I know that people who have never seen a desert IRL don't think there's as much color as there is - and even people who have seen it don't always really look.

And, yes, I know about the statues and such. It was mind-blowing when I first learned about it.

Apparently, Jordan and UAE stood in for Arrakis. Those are places I have not been.

I don't even know where I'm going with this, so I'm just going to stop. I never wanted to argue. I, personally, liked how it looked. You did not. AND THAT IS OK.

A movie that really gave us the grandeur of the open desert is Lawrence of Arabia. I don't think Dune quite captured THAT, and given the locations they shot in, they probably could have tried.

 

I didn't find it lacking in color - sombre, maybe, but there was certainly color. The arrival on Arrakis, Jessica's dress in particular.

 

You could always watch German art house films from the 80s.

I’v never heard the ‘84 movie referred to as a “cult classic,” generally. Have heard it referred to as a big budget flop, which it was. But that alone didn’t mean it was a bad movie .

One of the things that made it a bad movie for me was changing the story to make it not about control of the spice, but control of secret weapon used by the Fremen. THAT, to me, was unforgivable.

Now, that being said, the ‘84 movie was beautiful to look at. The costumes and set design were incredible. My wife at the time, had studied costuming and set design in college couldn’t stop praising the film.

Had Lynch been as meticulous with the story, they might actually have had a “cult classic.”

Sorry, but both of you are most incorrect. . Nothing is being “re-written” about Ent. People are simply finally watching it and realizing it had two of the most awesome seasons of all of the spins. It’s a cult classic.

 

Say what you want about the 84 Dune, the soundtrack slaps.

 

That could work as a movie, if we see Leto only in shadows--or only partially--in the scenes from God Emperor. There is certainly enough political intrigue in that novel to establish a framing story. The audience could tell Leto doesn't look human, but the final reveal would have to take place after the end of Children of Dune.

 

The only thing is that people might think the movie has ripped off Jabba the Hutt from Star Wars. It could look almost comical if not done correctly. I think it might have to be filmed largely from Leto's point of view before the end of the movie to avoid spoiling the reveal. The beginning might be introduced by Duncan Idaho (ghola) and Siona Atreides talking about plotting against the emperor Leto. The audience might perhaps wonder how Duncan and Leto are alive and why Duncan is apparently a traitor. The plots of Messiah and Children would follow, perhaps with more exposition by Duncan and Siona between the two, perhaps with Siona's rebellion, and her capture and testing in the desert to pad out part 1. After Leto's anastomosis with the sand trout and ascension to emperor in Children, the time jumps to 3,500 years later - Leto putting Siona in a spice trance perhaps should be included but probably the Hwi Noree thread would have to be dropped for time and simplicity, which would be a pity. It's difficult to see how to balance the content between two movies and one would not be enough unless it were nearly four hours long. Probably never going to get made anyway but Messiah might on its own.

 

Color or visuals should not detract from the story and the acting, it should enhance and support it but not overpower it. There are movies that use color themes very well, one of my favorite movies is Hero in that regard ( chinese Kung Fu movie with Jet Li amongst others and gorgeous cinematography and color). Another movie would be Avatar, where the colors help transport you to an alien world that is completely different from ours.

All i hear from Jodorowsky's plans is bonkers - if it were made i'm pretty sure it would have bombed hard but some hardcore art fans would claim it is one of the best movies ever. We will never know but it's always fun to read about his version.

 

Wasn't it going to be 14-hours long? No cinema would want to show a movie that long nor would most patrons' bladders tolerate it. Jodorowsky compared Herbert's work to Proust. I've never really understood where he saw the similarity apart from the length of the books. Frank Herbert's six Dune novels total 2,500 pages and just over a million words; the seven volumes of À la recherche du temps perdu total 4,200 pages and just over 1.25 million words when translated into English. Jodorowsky and Giraud (Moebius) took a lot of ideas from their aborted effort and created The Incal graphic novels series about which I know nothing but it's supposedly really good.

 

I had not even thought of lack of color in the film until brought up here.

Besides being set on a very bleak ball of sand, isn't there some kind of trope that uses toned down color to represent the bad things going on, the dark times. Once the heroes fix the situation everything suddenly looks a lot more colorful at the end. Maybe that is happening here.

 

Jessica was Gorgious in her Arrakis landing debut.
They could have used color as a maybe "Tool" like everything on arrrakis was beige or grey, if you had Green, or Blue, or Red as something of a highlight, something of hey.. pay attention to me, i'm different.
Maybe do that in the next movie, show the freeman villages, as something more colorful, some desert flowers, Its not a "Dead" world where there is no water whatso ever, its just rare. Some desert plants are colorful.

 

Sorry about my defensiveness yesterday. It's been a bad week or so.

@crookeddy I *really* need to see Lawrence of Arabia at some point. Of course, that requires finding the nearly 4 hours to watch it... Can it be split in half-ish? That's how my hubby showed me The Seven Samurai.

@FPAlpha I loved Hero too. Some of the most amazing use of color I've ever seen.

 

That's how I first saw it in the 70s. cut in two and hacked up with commercials.

 

It does have an intermission point. I had to watch it over two days.

 

My favorite movie has an intermission point. I love that in films.
