I've been to Palm Springs and Vegas and when its not blooming the desert is pretty... gray.

As for the movie. It didn't do much for me. I guess I liked it. Definitely want the sequel - it promises to be very epic.

To be delayed to 2027? What do you think will happen first - humans return to the moon, or Dune 2 gets released? :)

    Happy there doing part2,
But do agree with some of the others that it needs a bit more flair/pizzaz.. Bit more over the top ness.

Strongly disagree. Lets leaves the over the topness in the 80s.

It'll hopefully not follow the same path as Avatar. I'm confident, Villeneuve has already been working on the script even before the green light came ( he must have had insider knowledge of course that told him it's near certain) and Zimmer apparently has music material for part 2 ready. It's a bit ambitious to have such a big movie done in 2 years but much work has already been done so all they have to do is actually build/CGI the stuff and get the crew together.

Script could be done by late spring, shooting could start summer/fall 2022 which gives them enough time to complete shooting, editing and VFX work for the planned October 2023 release date.

Indeed. Currently the landscape I live in is very much muted and less colorful as the trees loose leaves, and fields loose their color. But, then, I'm not know as the visuals guy so what do I know.

I grew up in a desert.

Have you ever been to Arches National Park? Or the Valley of Fire, or Bryce Canyon? Lots of vivid colors in those deserts.

And that's a dodge anyway, because a movie's look is not all about the outdoor locations. It's about the clothes people wear, the way they decorate their buildings, etc. We see bare stone on statues in Rome, pillars in Egypt and pyramids in Mexico and think that's what they've always looked like, but in fact those were typically vividly painted, as @Mark2000 says.

I'd much rather see the insanity of something like Jodorowsky's Dune, the aborted attempt to make a Dune film in the 70s, which resulted in the "dream team" of designers who went on to do Alien.

Jodorowsky's team put together a massive tome to try to sell the film, and the concepts for the characters and settings and anything but desaturated.

Fall 2022 is when Villeneuve said was possible for filming if they got the greenlight right away, which makes sense for a 2023 release.

I'm done with insanity. Give me muted right now. I'm supposed to be grounded in the world not oohing and awing over color. I mean, I get that it is film and art and people want color and the like but that's jus not for me. If I want color there is ways to get it not in film.

The world is full of color. It's not sepia toned.

Personally I just want real looking color. Not over the top color. Not Snyder color. Just real looking color. The MCU gives me this and DC movies for the most part do not. (As an example of what I mean)

There is something in between vivid insanity and moderate levels of realism... I like seeing things that might actually happen... "What if Dune was real, what would it look like" is what I'd like the director to ask himself.

I liked most of the production design - the armour still bugs me. Arrakeen itself didn't work for me either (the whole city built under a roof? It makes logical sense but isn't what I ever pictured - maybe Carthag it would have worked better for).

I didn't find it too muted - Jessica wore a lot of colour, and everyone else was in uniforms. The desert was bright and blinding during the day. Yes the style of the uniforms was more late 20th/early 21st century, with added facist vibes, but we're in the early 21st century. Trying to make them look like colourful, crazy clothes from the past and you end up with the same problem as the miniseries - they're just silly to today's aesthetic. The palace itself is a Harkonnen construction and it being bland and utilitarian is appropriate. The Harkonnens aren't exactly known for warm, comfy, and inviting architecture. This is actually a complaint the Atreides make in the books the buildings are so ugly and bland and cold.

Paul's visions were a disappointment though. This was the chance for them to be all crazy and hallucigenic. Before he comes into his power and sees things clearly. I'd totally be up for more weirdness and more in general of them.

My sister wasn’t a fan of the visions. She feels that it made the story drag.
That and killing “Ronon Dex”. :)

Random roadside stop near Moab, Utah. Reddish rocks. Blue skies, and this photo does not begin to do justice to the reds.

The people I was with were confused about the visions too, mostly, I think, because they didn't have Paul's naming.

"But he saw Jamis & Chani kill him - I thought he saw the future? But he didn't die?"

"It's a metaphor. Paul dies in the fight, Muad'Dib is born."

    "Who the fuck is Muad'Dib?"

It’s the name of the desert mouse. He takes the name as his Freman one.
