OMFG these online entertainment journos have gotten so incredibly lazy it boggles the mind! The IGN article is quoting a slashfilm posting, which is itself taking literally half a sentence from a Hollywood Reporter interview and padding it out into an article that could be summed up simply with the original HR quote: "sources saying Lucasfilm is looking for an actress to star opposite Dawson as Mandalorian warrior Sabine Wren." That's not an official announcement, it's not even a poorly disguised casting call, and the unnamed source isn't even said to be within Lucasfilm itself.

I mean it's probably right (as literally any fan that's seen Rebels could have guessed), but this is still just really shitty journalism on IGN's part as it proves they don't even bother to spend the 10 seconds it would take to check the source, just blindly repost.

I was really hoping Tiya Sircar would be cast as Sabine, but it doesn't sound like that's going to happen :weep:

If true, then this is excellent news, news that I've been hoping to read since the show was announced. However...

Yeah, this shit drives me fucking insane. But as long as they keep getting tons of clicks and shares because people only read the headline and go crazy without actually tracking down the original reporting, IGN and other shitty online entertainment sites will keep publishing this shit.

While it's nice when that's possible as it was with Sackoff (who's character was custom made specifically for her), in Sircar's case she's simply not the same ethnicity as Sabine, who was designed to be more of the east Asian (possibly specifically Japanese) persuasion.

Also since they cast Dawson as live action Ahsoka, it'd be weird to have Sircar in there. Better to cast someone new I think.
The real kicker is that the HR interview quote isn't even from the interviewee, it's just an editorial interjection. Journalists are literally quoting each other stating rumours here...

Really? I've watched every episode of Rebels and I never got the East Asian vibe with Sabine at all! Not saying you're wrong, just that I didn't notice it.

If they're going with a different actress I just hope they nail the voice and attitude. Sabine can be really playful and sarcastic, at least in the Rebels era, so I really don't want to see another stoic warrior type like most of the other Mando characters.

I'm still wondering whether they hired Sasha Banks to play Sabine and then when they got her on set realised... maybe not. To put it politely .

It isn't really apparent in Rebels' art-style, but you can tell in some places where she's been depicted more realistically, like the collector's action figure or various pieces of trading card art. I thought there were more illustrations/paintings of her from books, but they aren't turning up, I might be thinking of fan-art.

It's not super obvious given how stylised the show's art design was, but the epicanthic folds and the warm skin tones are a dead giveaway. That said, just look at any official commissioned art of her done in a live action style, like for the black series action figure or (I think?) one of the mobile games and probably a trading card game. Also, consider the designs for her family members. It's pretty self-evident once you know what they're going for.
No matter what, she won't be the same as she was in Rebels, just as the Ahsoka that we got in Rebels and The Mandalorian wasn't the same Ahsoka from TCW, or indeed the Luke in RotJ and beyond wasn't the same Luke from ANH.
Time has past, things have happened, people change. Assuming the Ahsoka show takes place around the same RotJ+5 timeframe as The Mandalorian, then Sabine would be in her early 30's. She's not the cocky, broken, insecure teenager we knew. She's a war veteran and protector of an entire planet on a quest with a wizard to save a long lost friend.

Personally I'm curious to see how much she's taken Jedi teachings and philosophy to heart over her Mandalorian upbringing. It'd be interesting to see that duality explored more as Rebels only lightly touched on the idea.

I have to be honest, I always felt Sabine's family looked more "obviously Asian" than she did.
Obviously not since she's not Asian. And given Filoni is involved with The Mandalorian, if there were plans to have Sabine on the show, he'd make sure they only searched for Asian actresses.

And has Filoni ever said anything? Because if not it seems pretty clear that they left it nebulous on purpose for exactly this reason. Shortlist of three actors (allegedly) to play her in live action and one isn't Asian at all.

Promotional artwork doesn't mean much. Unless Pierce Brosnan is down to play Thrawn. If anything I saw more of Tiya Sircar's Indian heritage in Sabine than East Asian. Though admittedly, less so from her family.

Fully aware 8 or 9 years have passed since Rebels ended and she'll have grown up a bit, but it'd be pretty sad to not show any of her charm and personality in the character. Especially considering how straight-faced Ahsoka has become.

You know very well what we're referring to.

We're using real world descriptors to describe their ethnicity because how else would we do it?

Is there somewhere in the Star Wars universe we could use as a descriptor instead? If not we're sticking to real world ones.

The novels call them "people with epicanthic folds." "Asian" is simpler to use.

It might not, but it clearly has different races of humans, and they pretty much match up with Earth races, since they are being played by actors from Earth. It's easier to just describe them as that ethnivity, than to say that a character looks like an Asian person from Earth, but isn't actually Asian because the Star Wars galaxy doesn't have an Asia.

True enough. I have read the epicanthic fold developed as defense against sunshine excessively reflecting off snow. So Polar humans could be an in-universe name.

Rather have tiya and taylor, even vanessa as hera. They look close enough to the characters.
Plus all the maybes for Sabine kinda sucks

I guess he'll probably show up in flashbacks/visions or as a Force Ghost?
I don't totally hold him responsible for his performance in the prequels, so I am curious to see what he's like in Obi-Wan and now this.

Good. I would like to see continuity from the cartoons to live action happen. Anakin Skywalker's apprentice Ahsoka would possibly have a holocron with Anakin's teaching on it. Much like Kanan had one that Ezra studied for lightsaber training. Force Ghost is also possible, given what happened in Return of the Jedi. But the cake would be seeing a flashback to a scene of the Clone Wars in live action.
