I liked this one. First, one of my biggest complaints about the series was making Boimler too incompetent, and this episode just fixes that, period.

I wonder if the engineer knows he could easily have sex if he wanted to and his planet would have no power to compel him, but he's actually Ace and uses that as an excuse not to.

Maybe in the evolved sexually open future, the only orientation that's still taboo is Ace.

I would guess that's only an issue on his home planet and then only because he is the next in line to be the King.
It would be more than a bit strange for every sexual classification to be accepted without question within the Federation except for someone who prefers not to have sex.

At least as of 2364, it kinda tracks.

I think they mean that as of the start of the TNG Era in 2364 the Federation seems to accept the local traditions and sexual mores of worlds that behave like the one seen in this episode. Not too judgmental and willing to overlook certain behaviors so long as basic freedoms are respected and a democratic system is in place.

"Ace"?

And on a completely unrelated matter: The crashed alien ship in this episode, is the dead captain supposed to be a race we've seen before? It didn't look familiar..

Oh, and I totally hope the Hysperians turn up in a live-action Trek series. I'd freaking LOVE to see what Monaveen-class ships "really" look like...

Short for aesexual.

Oh, OK, that makes sense.

I mean, I knew what you all were talking about (Billups' celibacy) I just didn't know what the specific word meant.

And there's a shout-out to that in "I, Excretus" when mirror Billups mentions how horny he is.

About the whole "Ace" thing, though, I agree that it makes no sense for people who fit that profile to be discriminated against or looked down on. Thankfully nobody seems to be doing that (except for Paolana of course). In a culture like the Federation, that orientation would be respected just like any other.

Maybe in postwar 2380, but in Roddenberrian 2364 you get the impression that it is the local custom to make love at the drop of a hat. Perhaps that was around the time he joined Starfleet and he was facing peer pressure.

They want to study them, I think.

We'd be better off if we and Russia just agreed to kill all the remaining smallpox in the world. But we haven't done it, have we?
