What if it BOMBS

So..what if the very bad happend? What if the movie SUCKS big time. It is possible. How many times have we waited for a so called great movie to come out and it ended up being a mound of turd. For me? Godzilla 1998 was such a movie. I am a Godzilla fan, big time. And when Godzilla 1998 was announced I was so thrilled...but it blew. I know some of you liked it, but for me, the movie was a let down.

What if this movie doesn't appeal to us old fart fans, and fails to generate a new 'era'. What do you think would be the effect upon the rest of the franchise. I think it would be a death nail. If it fails on the big screen, no one, not CBS, heck not even CW will touch the TV side of the house.

To state the obvious...EVERYTHING Trek is riding on how this movie performs next may. They....better.....get......it.....right!

Anyway, sure, maybe the film will suck. And maybe it'll fail financially. Two different things, the first being subjective and the latter more demonstratable. That's just a possibility; until then we can only speculate based largely on the past record of those involved. But we know nothing for certain.

I don't agree though. Even if it totally tanks, I can see it appearing in some format a few years down the line. With a significantly lower budget probably. Maybe an Internet series. The way we view media is changing so rapidly - I can see some sort of direct-to-internet TV series. Thats the way the world is going I think. The lines are blurring.

I just can't see them throwing this much money at it again though if this fails. It really it Trek's big chance.

Having said all that, I have high hopes. I think we'll get three movies out of it.

Pointless to worry about. This movie has as much chance of bombing same as any other film ever put out there to the viewing public. Equally, it has just as much chance to succeed big time on many levels.

Star Trek has bombed before recently by many standards and yet we're getting this film despite that.

Have faith and don't try to string together reasons why its a self-evident fact that it will suck.

^ I agree, even if the movie tanks, Paramount might be gunshy to pour more money into the franchise, but CBS could mount a more reasonably budgeted project, direct to dvd/new media. If not live action, then an animated show would certainly be doable and in my opinion would be a good idea to get on the air even if the film does make hundreds of millions of dollars.

Unfortunately, I don't think your point is exaggerated. This movie has to be very strong at the box office for us to see a sequel or anything else Trek anytime soon. Failure is not an option. After having read all that I have, I would be amazed if this movie flopped though.

I'd say the announcement of Trek XII or any other indication from Paramount that they're happy with the take is the only sign that matters. North American box office is only 40-ish% of first year film revenues these days. I figure a $50 million opening weekend (Thu-Sun) and a $120-140,000,000 domestic box office + another $150,000,000 overseas and DVD sales ought to do it. I think expecting Transformers or Spider Man revenues is a bit lofty, though not impossible if it gets good word of mouth, but it doesn't need to do that kind of business to make enough money to warrant another.

I totally agree. But in the meantime, I really think that CBS should be mounting a Trek project. I'm surprised that they haven't even repackaged two of the most impressive TOS-R episodes into a weekend prime-time special with some clever wrap-around interviews or something.

More than possible, it's probable, IMO. And if it's the nail in the coffin some fear it will be, then we can kiss Trek goodbye for a very long time...at least until there's different management at Paramount...

So I'm unoriginal. I don't care. Anywho...Paramount is in the business of making money. They're already been burned with VOY, ENT, "Insurrection," and "Nemesis". The franchise has been hemorrhaging viewers/fans since the late 90's. Trek is no longer a money-maker. If this movie fails, Paramount will not greenlit any more Trek. Hence, NO MORE TREK.

Less probable then you likely (or more accurately desire to) think.
Like I've been saying all over the place the dynamics which applied to Star Trek in the past are out the window... the "fans" as a base haven't been there so Paramount is doing the only rational thing, attempting to broaden that base by at long last dragging Star Trek into the modern era of storytelling.

We (any one who posts at a board like this) count for very little in the grand scheme of this movie and so much the better since as a group fans tend to be myopic and greedy and close minded about what they claim to enjoy.

Actually I hope ST succeeds and flourishes in the near future, but doubt that it will with this approach. I'd love for the film to be great, though. 8)

I'm actually half expecting it to bomb. If it's a success, we'll have a new franchise; And if it fails, Trek can resume it's much needed Hiatus until after the fad of reboots, reimaginings, reanimations or whatever other tactics that allow todays producers to ring money out of old ideas without having to come up with any new ones passes; At which time, hopefuly someone with an original thought in thier head can bring it back to some sembelence of what we liked about it in the first place. Either way I'll be happy.
