Washington's Patrick Murphy had a shit night tonight in Pittsburgh. Two wild pitches he threw both managed to nail home plate umpire Tony Randazzo; the first deflected off his shoe, and the second hit him in the hand; the Pirates' trainer had to come out and look at it, and the guy was in visible pain. He managed to finish calling the game, but still... yee-ouch. :(

More random baseball stat geek stuff.... the Yankees are the second team (1991 Rangers) to have a 13-game winning streak followed by 13 games going 2-11 or worse.

Smoltz is in the booth for tonight's Yankees/Mets game. Looks like Fox doesn't mind that he's antivaxx....

Corbin Burnes is three outs away from pitching a no-no with 14 strikeouts.

Boo! They put in Hader for the ninth inning, even after Cain made a beautiful diving catch to preserve the no-no to end the eighth.

Logically speaking, there's no such thing as a "combined" no-hitter. It really doesn't mean anything unless it's all one pitcher.

Yeah, I hate that labeling. It's just so the statisticians can say there were even more no-hitters!

Even as a kid, I thought it was weird when I collected whichever baseball card range that featured no-hitters (I think this set was Fleer or Topps, circa '91) and included combined no-hitters. I thought it was lame then and I think it's lame now.

That said, I understand why Craig Counsell made the change here considering Burnes had already exceeded his season-high pitch count and the Brewers are going to be in the playoffs, so they don't want to risk injury.

    Fenway Park (Boston)
(First no-hitter to feature more than one pitcher. Ruth was ejected for arguing with and punching the ump after walking lead-off batter Ray Morgan. Shore was called in and Morgan was thrown out trying to steal second. Shore then retired the next 26 batters for the “imperfect game.”)

Is it just me, or does Ryan Ruocco (who's doing today's Twins/Yankees game) always sound like he's about to burst a blood vessel? He is the exact opposite of Joe Buck.

No findings of fact, only allegations, have been made against Bauer. That's the difference, sad as it is to say. Same reason DeShaun Watson hasn't been suspended by the NFL: The leagues can't interfere with investigations that are actively being operated by actual, legitimate law enforcement authorities, ergo they can't make their own findings.

Was there ever anything but Twitter allegations made against Russell? I sure don't remember there being any criminal investigation at all with him. Sure, he accepted the 40 game suspension, so there's implied guilt there.

No criminal investigation but Melisa Russell met with MLB and provided the abusive texts and photo evidence of his abuse.

And with seemingly more evidence than they have against Bauer, she never went to the cops? That always seemed fishy to me. Not "he didn't do it" fishy, but strange.

So I’m on my way out of Yankee Stadium yesterday, Don Mattingly bobblehead in hand….and people kept wanting to BUY it.

What the actual fuck? They could have gotten one for free when they walked in!

That or they got there late and the stadium had run out of bobbleheads.
