They're heading to Mann now aren't they? IIRC this is where she first showed up in the comics...well, aside from those scenes in the first issue that sets up part of the mystery. Keeping that out may just mean they're not bothering the the red herrings as much, not an indicator of how involved a character she'll be. Indeed, the ring was underplayed and they switched out that weird necklace thing for exploding Nazis, so it seems to track.

I'm watching first episode right now.

What do you think about they foreshadow the apocalypse with the death of small animals? In comics it all happened suddenly

One could argue that it makes the point that bringing fringe people into the government in order to appease a particular group could have dire consequences in a crisis.

You know, other nations have the concept of
national unity government when there is some type of crisis. I suppose that would be literally impossible in the US.

That seemed odd to me too. Then I realized they started with small animals and then they moved to gradually larger ones. That may be more realistic - I don't know anything about that type of epidemic - or it was meant to create an impending & growing sense of doom.

Ok so I bit the bullet and got the free month trial. I also want to see that Martin Short/Steve Martin show, so it's two for one, right?

Not sure what to make of this yet. I do like the political part of it that deals with trying to get the infrastructure going, but the political infighting with the dead president's daughter is kind of driving me nuts. It too, was the part I disliked most about Designated Survivor. I guess (especially in this day and age) that it might reflect reality more than we'd like to admit, but still.

I'll see if I can keep up with this...

Only Murders in the Building is fantastic. Even if this show doesn't work out for you, you got yourself a winner with that show. I've loved ever second of each episode so far.

Good to read that I'm not the only one who is unfortunately reminded of Designated Survivor.

And that sucks, too, because I really liked almost every single element of the show, otherwise. I stayed until the very end because of the other compelling storylines. It just got really grating that with each season, there was always someone or something, trying to undermine the president, politically, from the inside. I would hope to think, that if something like that happened, it would be a common focus on unity, rather than division.

Damn, then you have more tolerance than I do. I bailed halfway through the first season. The conspiracies just got too ridiculous at that point while ignoring the true potential of the premise.

I just really liked Kiefer's take on the character. he can be such a hard-nosed jerk/hero so easily, it was nice to watch him play an average nice guy who gets placed in an incredible situation.

Have admit, I enjoyed the ending of Y's third episode. Damn! 355 is COLD!

Yeah, I did enjoy his performance even if I didn't watch 24 more than a handful episodes and didn't experience that hard contrast.

I loved that! I was getting a little worried they made her a little too soft but that moment reassured me greatly.

    soooo... I guessed right..? :(

However, I meant it from a technical point of view. In the United States, there is no distinction between Head of State and Head of Government. Usually, in other countries the former is a super-partes figure, the latest is the political expression of the electoral will of the citizens. Therefore the first represents the state, regardless of the parties, and can manage and organize the creation of a national unity government, as a kind of impartial referee.

In the United States, on the other hand, the President represents both positions and is always an expression of political parties. It is the closest thing to a democratically elected monarch that exists in democracies.

I was laughing about the possibility of "national unity" of any kind right now. But yes, you are correct. The US doesn't have any kind of technical "back-up" like that. Further down in the article you cited, it says:

Since the Civil War, there has never been a "national unity" government in the United States in the traditional sense. There have been several instances, however, during national disasters or wars, that the two parties have briefly "rallied around the President." Such instances include the attack on Pearl Harbor, the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and the September 11 attacks, all of which not only had a worldwide effect, but preceded a massive spike in the approval rating of the sitting president.

In my experience working in state and county government, there are enough career civil servants to keep a lot of things running for awhile if all the elected and appointed "heads" were suddenly dead. I don't have any numbers on this, but IME a lot of them are women.

However, in two of those instances (don't think it happened with JFK's assassination) there were huge increases of racism as a result of those two moments in history so not really all that united.

Excellent point! However, I think the article was specifically looking at "partisan bickering" in government.

Fair point. A narrow scope but true nonetheless.

Ok.. Caught ep. 4 during lunch today. Good continuation of the story. I'm really loving 355. While the character could indeed just be portrayed as a cold, blunt instrument, she has personality and depth.

I'm a little confused as how much time has passed since the culling. It seems like while yes, having the population of men die off at once would cause panic and unrest, it seems like the destruction of society has happened all too quickly. In the real world (having worked in the utility industry), I know there are plenty of women who could keep the power on and water flowing.

Grid security is a huge issue we're facing right now, and some of the smartest people I know working on it are women. We have microgrid systems, powered by both fossil fuels and renewables, that should be able to withstand an emergency such as this. It's not like a hurricane ravaged the planet and knocked out the infrastructure.

Episode four is a vast improvement and not doubt because it was actually focused on Yorick, 355, Hero, and Sam. Yorick and 355 don't actually travel very far but, on a character level, they have begun to understand each other better. If they're traveling at this slow pace, it's no wonder Allison isn't a cast member yet.

As for Hero and Sam, I've been curious to see how that storyline would align with Hero's opening arc and we're already beginning to get a sense of that. I'm still very wary of how it'll play out depending on how closely it follows considering the inclusion of Sam. But Nora's presence and her knowledge of who Hero really is possibly a bigger wild card. One could argue that the story arc is already very different. On the other hand, we didn't actually see the beginning of that arc...just the middle and end.

That said, this strong focus on these four characters leaves me worried about how much of a strong focus on the DC politics there will be in the next episode. Not looking forward to that.

It's been several weeks (the first episode said exactly how far forward but I've already forgotten the exact time) since the Event as of the first episode and probably no more than a week since then.

While you're right that there are a fair number of women who can maintain power, water flowing, food distribution, etc., there are two things you need to keep in mind:

    1. When all of the men died, that means a lot of planes fell from the sky. That's a lot of deaths and that's just from inside the planes themselves. We saw at least one crash in New York City itself and it probably wasn't the only one to crash into a highly populated area. Then you have to account for all of the major car accidents across the country. Not just in the cities but across all of the Interstates. Likewise for trains, subways, and trams, although I don't know how much that's automated and how much safety brakes could save people in those cases. That's going to be an additional death toll of hundreds of thousands of people, if not more. And that's before you even get to how that effects hospitals.

    2. Lawlessness will become a clear and present danger in that aftermath no matter what. We've already seen that both on a macro and micro level in the first four episodes. Mobs, gangs, and just general looting. And that's before you get to those who are organized enough to take advantage of that lawlessness (like at the market and that's just on the micro level).

So, yeah, I definitely can see this level of disarray and destruction and lack of resources happening in short order.
