It had a bigger box office, and made more money, then any of the other DCEU films, and it got good reviews while doing it. I'm pretty sure it was a big nail in the coffin of Zack Snyder's DCEU, since it did so well while also rejecting everything from the DCEU except the main characters casting and a few small references.
Not bad for a character that had been considered a joke by non-comic fans for decades, and more proof, as far as I'm concerned, that nearly any DC (or Marvel) hero can be successful with the mainstream audience if the right people are using them in projects that people actually want to see.
Yawn.
I also enjoyed the extended cut of BvS. The stuff that was cut was vital to the story IMO. It didn't make sense without it.
I agree. I also feel that way about Justice League. I just watched the theatrical version last weekend to compare it to the extended version. The theatrical version felt like notes for a movie rather than a complete story (which is how it felt the first time I watched it), and the only reason I was able to follow the action sequences this time around is because I had the Snyder version in my mind.
Funny -- that's how I felt about Batman v Superman's theatrical cut, that it felt like fragments of a movie rather than a complete story. It's also how I felt about X-Men Origins: Wolverine, like it was the Cliffs Notes summary of a longer movie. I think it's the result of studios demanding short runtimes so they can get in more daily showings at theaters, with no regard for story considerations. Didn't Warner Bros. demand that the JL theatrical cut be no more than 2 hours long?
I loved MOS. Hated BvS, JL and Aquaman. It always felt to me like Aquaman and Justice League were successes in the same way Transformers films were. Spectacle, color and jokes and who needs anything else (although the JL theatrical cut didn't even have any decent spectacle - I haven't seen the new cut). Especially since Aquaman didn't seem to generate almost any hype or larger conversation at all. It was there, people went to see it a lot and then it was gone.
That and I think a lot of people who hated MOS and BVS really hyped the later movies up just because they were the exact opposite of the earlier ones. Some people really seemed to think that Superman being less broody somehow makes a movie good no matter what else happens in it.
But as much as that really felt like the general gist of the overall situation at large, everything ultimately does come down to the personal. Some people genuinely love all of these movies for reasons that are clearly a lot deeper than just explosions and stuff, regardless of whether I'm capable of seeing what they see in the films. Hell, I think The Last Jedi is the coolest and most fun Star Wars movie ever made, so I'm well aware of how it is to find yourself fundamentally in dischord with the zeitgeist of popular movies.
I agree with your assessment of both those movies as well. The BvS extended cut makes a lot more sense and holds together much better. My only quibble is that it should have been made clear that Clark's "Martha" comment was said intentionally because Clark is a great investigative reporter and made the psychological conclusion that Bruce would react to hearing his mother's name. At least that's what I pretend happened in that scene.
Also, another movie that I feel could have been much better if it were fleshed out with more time and effects is Green Lantern.
It certainly could have established earlier on in the movie that Hector knows Hal and Carol. In the movie as is it really comes out of left field.

MoS, BvS, WW(1), Aquaman and ZSJL are among the strongest, most coherent, structurally sound attempts to place comic book characters & their fantasy conflicts in real world settings ever attempted, and feel like a naturally connected world thanks to story, not Easter eggs and just dropping situations into films and expecting it make sense. Most of the lead characters (namely Superman, Batman & Wonder Woman) all feel like versions of their printed counterparts seen over the decades. Its very rare for any comic book movie's characters to come so close, that one could not imagine any other performers in those roles.
The extended cut on Blu-ray does exactly that.

For me it depends on the film. I do think that many films today are overlong but I wouldn’t have cut a second from eg Blade Runner 2049 and I was fine with Infinity War & Endgame. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was probably overlong from an objective POV but I was in the right mood to enjoy every single self-indulgent second of it.
