The Matrix 4

WB released a synopsis of the movie

https://www.comicbookmovie.com/sci-fi/matrix/the-matrix-resurrections-check-out-an-intriguing-synopsis-and-two-new-stills-a187899

“The Matrix Resurrections is a continuation of the story established in the first Matrix film… 20 years after the first film, the franchise that helped define pop culture at the turn of the century is back for a continuation and extension of the original movie. A mind-bending new adventure with action and epic scale, it’s set in a familiar yet even more provocative world where reality is more subjective than ever and all that’s required to see the truth is to free your mind"
They're ignoring the sequels??

Okay...

They're definitely following REVOLUTIONS because that film ended with the Matrix no longer having the strong green tint after Neo killed Smith and ended the war.

"A continuation of the story established in the first Matrix film"

"Continuation and extension of the original movie"

That's exactly what it means, it's way too specific to mean anything else. Looks like Reloaded and Revolutions are history.

Whatever you say.

The chances of Lana Wachowski invalidating or ignoring 2/3 of a story that she and her sister spent a large chunk of their lives developing and that was a direct allegory for their experiences as Trans women are slim to none.

I didn't read the article, but "established in the first Matrix film" does not invalidate the rest of the trilogy, nor does the second statement. It looks from the trailer to be going back to similar events from the first film, but am I the only one to think the trailer makes it look like Resurrections is starting the franchise again and not just a one-off movie?

I think that's WB trying the emphasize the first film over the sequels, because they know the sequels had a very mixed reception.

So far, nothing featured in the trailer contradicts the events of the sequels. If anything, it only reinforces that it is a sequel. With Neo and Trinity, who were (seemingly) killed in REVOLUTIONS, are the only prominent returning characters featured, and the fact that the color palette matches the ending of REVOLUTIONS with the green tint no longer present. Also, the cast includes Lambert Wilson and Jada Pinkett-Smith, who both played characters unique to the sequels.

I’m pretty sure that girl with the Alice book is the young girl from the Subway from Revolutions. There’s one reference to the third movie.
You can also see “real” Neo with the scorched eyes.

She reminded me of The Oracle, maybe that girl took her place and is keeping an eye on Neo?

I just rewatched the trailer and saw this. Yup. This is definitely not ignoring the sequels, despite the odd phrasing in WB's written synopsis.

I did not see the eyes in his "old man" face--nice catch. That hints that the resurrection aspect is pretty simple. Neo never died, but was returned to the machine pod; and it is possible that neither did Trinity--she could have been healed and returned to a pod herself.

There are also theories that the game, Matrix Online is also canon, explaining why Morpheus isn’t in it as he was assassinated in the game.

IIRC, one of the storylines on that online game was Morpheus demanding the Machine City to return Neo's body to Zion. Perhaps this is the follow up to that storyline, where they finally discover that he's alive within the Matrix and try to help make him remember who he was and what he's capable of.

Even if he did die in the third movie, the technology the machines have at their disposal are at beyond TNG-level holodeck stuff having created an entire virtual world, so it's not a stretch that they have the technology to revive Neo, hell it's not even explicitly clear that he did die in Revolutions, sure we see the machines carting him away but for all we know he could have just been unconscious. The fact that we see burnt eyed Neo in the trailer says to me it's a continuation of the story, no question.

Saw the guys at Kinda Funny react to the trailer and one theory they thought of was that another cycle reboot is around the corner, with a new neo/morpheus/trinity reincarnation...
The Blue haired women with the bunny tattoo could be the new Trinity?!?

Okay...
That's they way I read it too.

So it is a young Morpheus. Or a Morpheus that is supposed to be similar in age to him 20 years ago in the original movie. Weird. Old Neo, young Morpheus.

As for the trailer. Looks interesting. Feels like a very fresh take on the world of the Matrix.

After reading the synopsis a few times, I can say with some certainty that they may *or* may not be ignoring the sequels.

"The Matrix Resurrections is a continuation of the story established in the first MATRIX film."

I mean, there were plenty of ways to word it that aren't ambiguous e.g. "... a continuation of the ground-breaking Matrix films / saga / trilogy". Unless they're simply emphasising the original over the less well received sequels, and there's nothing more to it.

Whatever the case may be, that was an awesome mix of White Rabbit.

Unless they're simply emphasising the original over the less well received sequels, and there's nothing more to it.

That's absolutely what is happening, for numerous reasons, and it's as dumb as Star Trek Strange New Worlds pandering to nostalgia for absolutely no reason.
