The fact that we can learn about him from interactions with others makes him a character. He has a personality, though we only see it filtered.

well, people does that…None of my closest friends knew anything about a major family thing I have until it came out randomly almost ten years after making their acquaintance, simply because there are some things one might prefer to keep private.
