I always screw up when I try to post a meme, so here is a Facebook link to a meme posted by Dayton Ward. I think you will find it appropriate.

This is partly what I’v been talking about. Maybe the writers thought they were making a subtle correlation between the Orions and 21st century racial politics, but if they were, I don’t think it landed. The writing just wasn’t clever enough to be “subtle”. In this case I think they needed to be more in your face with the joke. They left the door open for us to debate, did they, or didn’t they? You say the joke was subtle, I say it was non-existent.

I still believe that their “subtlety,” if that’s what you think it was, I think they just passed on the obvious joke for fear of backlash undermined whatever comedic potential the Orion segment may have had.

My hope is that they drop attempts at “subtlety” and their fear of offending and just go for it.
No, I understood you the first time, I just disagree.

And yes, I think debate and complexity are much better than a clear-cut thing like, say, Mariner saying: "Greenface bad! Racism bad! Discuss!"

BTW, I don’t think the Boimler thing had anything at all to do with the joke they should have gone for with the Orion’s.
It wasn't its primary function in the show, but a connetion can definitely be made, independently of the authors' intent. (I do think it was intentional, but it doesn't matter.)

So what's with in-universe merch being a thing in Lower Decks? Collectors plates of the Voyager crew? Who makes this stuff, and who would buy* it?

It reminds me of Shazam! and all the Justice League merch people wore in that movie. Who makes money from it? Some The Boys-style evil superhero corporation?

*or just get it for free because "no money"
Tokens have always been a thing with us monkeys, I don't expect that to change even with the evolving economics of the future. We like little mementos, and for some of us nerds, bigger, more plate like mementos. The idea is that Boimler's a nerd, like a real dyed-in-the-wool Starfleet nerd. He's us, a person who loved Star Trek growing up and would kill to be in it, but of course he lives there so it translates to a fawning over Starfleet, a somewhat *unhealthy* fawning over Starfleet.

I wonder why Paris wore the FC uniform (like the Titan crew).
in recent Star Trek different ships can have different uniforms and communicators, the reason is still unknown.

Of course this also happened in DS9, even if there was a stated rationale behind that.

“Call me Ishmael”. I don’t know what lesson we’re supposed to learn as the every-person watching all this but give me MOAAAAR

Yep. I wouldn't mind owning some Lower Decks merch. I want an Ensign Tendi plushy, I'm not going to lie.

The First Contact uniform is the one the big important ships wear, the Lower Decks one is for second string Starfleet forces.

Kind of how the second-string science vessels in the DSC timeframe get the tabless collar uniforms seen in "The Trouble With Edward(SHO)" while frontline starships get Discovery or Enterprise-style tunics.

Same people making Bearington or whatever that plush was. I don't see the issue. Voyager returning was a huge homecoming. Have commemorative items makes sense rather than just a pat on the back and a "Welcome home. Now, back to work."

Perhaps I'm missing something but I don't see the issue? I mean, we see O'Brien and Sisko both geek out over Kirk, and Sisko got his signature, and one of the DTI investigators said he would have done the same thing. Well, why bother if it can just be replicated? These things carry value to the person.

I doubt mementos and tactile items are going anywhere. Like I said before, we're monkeys, we like to hold things. Things we can touch feel real, they confirm existence for us, provide anchors. My little Twilight Sparkle figurine on my desk isn't something essential, but she's important to me because she represents feelings I have, she's tangible.

Alright, everybody...I refrained from doing my "Good Morning Good Morning" joke at the start of the day, so the Beatles reference thing has to end now! :p
