I dunno, I tend to prefer the simpler explanation which lines up with the fact that he now has an extended family. In fact, it lends more credence to the fact that he'd still be tinkering, perhaps even moreso than he did before he was active with the GBs, as retirees tend to tinker lots to keep from getting their minds idle. The fact that he could have retired isn't mutually exclusive to the fact that he could have continued tinkering. And people tend to move about, particularly after retirement. My bet is that not only did he continue tinkering, but that he'd also laid down roots.

That's the thing though, Egon is always and has always been tinkering. It's what he does. 24/7. Non-stop.
The idea that he's laying down roots out there clearly doesn't track with the fact that his daughter seems clearly estranged with her late father and this likely wasn't where she grew up. Odds are he was an absentee father at best.

Yeah, and he would continue to tinker for as long as he would want to. I still don't see how that has any bearing on anything. The fact that there are grandkids and a family of relations with an estranged daughter means that he must have tried and got seperated, and there's a story to be told in that.

    Interesting.
You can post Imgur images directly into the thread, you don't have to use a link.

The first screening was last night and the early reactions are very positive.

    io9's Germain Lussier:

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the sequel fans have been waiting decades for, for better and worse. It’s got great new characters, lots of surprises, & plenty of laughs with just the right amount of nostalgia. I loved SO much of it. However, it’s not without some issues.

Mainly, it packs so much into it, there are big leaps in logic & plot that hold it back from really firing on every cylinder. When it works though? Especially the kid stuff? Damn, it works. Just at times, it doesn’t. Overall though, I cheered, cried, & can’t wait to watch again
    Entertainment Weekly’s Lauren Huff:

Ghostbusters fans are gonna be thrilled with #GhostbustersAfterlife I think. I'm afraid to say much more than that, but there's a lot to love. Easter eggs and nostalgia fill just about every frame, but the story still manages to feel fresh and new
    Hollywood Critics Association's Scott Menzel:
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the Ghostbusters sequel that I’ve been waiting all my life to see. It is nostalgia done right. A perfect blend of classic Ghostbusters moments with a fresh & unique twist for a whole new generation to enjoy. I got goosebumps. #GhostbustersAfterlife

    Full Circle's James P. Poole:

I saw GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE. Sorry, no review. But what I can say is that it’s the best of the series, full stop. Stupendously well written, not leaning too hard on nostalgia, and telling a story better than even the original could muster. A winner in every sense. #CinemaCon
    Hurry up, November!

This is not exactly true is it?
For a start, complaining about a montage in a movie made in the eighties?
Almost *all* sequels have a ‘going backwards’ approach … oh no, the planet with the aliens have people on it, sky net has sent back another terminator, people have gone back to dinosaur island!

Many of your other points are either mistaken, or are using a broad brush to draw easy similarities. In terms of mistakes, the ‘evil force’ is under the entire city, but drawn to the museum because of the painting, not the building itself.

Basically, a sequel builds on the original, and at times will echo it… that’s basically what sequels are there to do, as a way of continuing the story. Even things left open for sequels (a trend that only really starts in a big way just after ghostbusters) looking at back to the future for example, you see repeated motifs and scenes as part of the form. Like a leitmotif. The echoes in GB II from I are just this.

    Basically, nope.

Right? How many movies just do the same thing for the sequel? I don't get why Ghostbusters II gets flack for it and films like Back to the Future III don't.

Because a good movie can overcome its problems more then a bad movie? I'd consider BTTF 3 is a very good movie (and much better then BTTF 2), while GB2 is kind of mediocre, with some good elements. Also, GB2 just straight up repeated plot points and did stupid stuff like "No one believes in ghosts again...because they're stupid, basically", while BTTF3 at least had a different setting and different problems for the heroes to overcome. So, I'd say better writing, more effort into making it not a retread of BTTF 1&2 and a cast that doesn't feel like they're only making the movie out of obligation helps put BTTF 3 over GB2, at least for me.

Do you really think humans wouldn’t just write it off as a conspiracy? That someone just dropped acid in the New York water table?

There’s people wh don’t believe in COVID right now, that 9/11 was an inside job etc.

I think it’s bad analysis for a pretty good sequel.

I disagree about it being a good sequel, but I'll grant you that our current times have proven that there is a significant number of stupid people willing to ignore or twist very obvious things. But, that shouldn't count as a point in the movie's favor.

The first movie literally hinges on stupid people willing to ignore and twist very obvious things.

Adam Savage gives a tour of the interior of Egon's old farmhouse and shows the level of the production's dedication of not just creating a space that looks and feels lived in, but also goes to great lengths to maintain scene continuity!

This video makes me just as excited about Afterlife as the trailers themselves!

Whether we need or don't need it's not up to us. Sony wants it.
If we had one great movie I'd be happy with that. But look at the era we're in.

In general, I think Ghostbuster is the kind of franchise that could be a Star Trek or Star Wars with different series with different groups in different places. Really all you need is a team of people capturing ghosts.
That's insane, I can't believe they actually built the whole exterior and at least part of the interior, I had assumed they just used a preexisting old house.

I had a chance to look at the animated series "The Real Ghostbusters" and I thought it was a very good interpretation of the movie. I am stunned why Ackroyd and the people at SONY didn't find inspiration from the animated team who clearly honored that 1st film. I thought what made those sequels so poorly was that it made such a conscious effort to tell the audience it wanted to be exactly like the 1984 film instead of just having our heroes do what they do... hunt down ghosts. The new movie appears to be doing the same thing, telling me they can't make a Ghostbusters movie without Slimer or Zuul, Gozer, the Destructor, and the gatekeeper. Just looking at that cartoon tells me with right core of creators someone could make a great run with that concept.
