Let’s be fair, star and co-writer of the original, literally died early, in protracted attempts to make a third film, with a difficult relationship with one of the other stars (thankfully repaired before his passing) so making the film deal with that in relation to the in-universe character is going to be mournful and sentimental.
The fact it literally deals with life after death as it’s core premise, makes it almost inevitable. The alternative is ‘hey yeah, Egons working on the LHC in Switzerland, dream job, but y’know couldn’t come help with world changing events and be with his friends and collegaues’ and tell a different story.
It’s like Ghostbusters II having to deal with the elephant in the room that is Dana and Peter, breaking up, so they can build a real relationship in the second. Because the film is heavily about people growing older, moving on, and trying to keep positive in that. It might not be the greatest sequel, but, everyone is not in the same place they were as it begins, and have changed even more by the end. Despite being accused of being a rehash of the original, it’s really completely different on a character level.

Yeah I'm firmly in the "Ghostbusters II seems underrated" camp. It's not as great as the first on a number of levels, but it doesn't have to be. While it hits a few familiar beats, it's very much it's own thing and ups the ante in both the personal stakes and the sheer spectacle. It knows it's a sequel and it's not ashamed to be self aware about it.

Dude invented portable nuclear accelerators with half life of 5,000 years. Pretty sure he could make a generator to keep the containment unit powered up as he transported it to the country.

Why he didn't solve global warming is the bigger question. Maybe BP had him killed

Well by that logic he could also make a containment system that wouldn't leak inside of a few decades.
Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the things he was working on was a way to "flush" the containment system. Either permanently dispersing the ghosts or banishing them back to the ghost dimension.

Either way, it's pretty clear from some fairly obvious clues that it's some kind of Shandor/Gozer cult related thing, not some faulty equipment.

It’s pretty clear that a Gozer cult tried another dimensional breach in a different location. As far as I could tell we have never seen any of the ghosts that were captured in the containment unit in the trailer for the new movie. Gozer and the Terror Dogs were never captured by the Ghostbusters but pushed back to their dimension of origin.

There's also the simple fact that those of us who were teens in the 80s (GenX) have gotten older. I'm 53 - I've dealt with the deaths of friends and family members, and the deaths of actors and musicians who literally changed my life. I'm dealing with aging parents and my own aging body. I *am* nostalgic for the days when the future seemed bright and limitless. And yes, there is a tinge of sadness to nearly everything.

You know the containment unit isn’t the big red thing right? It’s the entire basement, which is is now a tiny room, with the red thing in?

Yeah, and you know that in real life they move entire buildings right, let alone a sci fi universe with giant marshmallow men and, again, portable nuclear accelerators?

I think they would move the contents before they bothered moving the unit. There is dialogue in the nivel, possibly from earlier scripts, where they suggest off site storage.
Which is a bit less silly than moving a building the size of the fire station, or just it’s basement, in one piece.

Sure, it's possible it's an alternate one and they transported the contents of the OG using portable containment units.

But it still astounds me that in a sci fi/fantasy universe with magic, gods, and technology beyond anything remotely possible, moving a big chunk of metal, which we absolutely regularly do, is what is breaking people's suspension of disbelief

It’s not a big chunk of metal. It’s a bunch of lasers and shit behind breeze blocks. Like the metal is the prison door, not the prison itself.
But this is deep nerd argument shit. XD

Because as has already been pointed out, it's not a chunk of metal, it's an integrated apparatus built into foundations of a three story building. You wouldn't move it anymore than you'd move a central heating system. You couldn't even get it out the door in one piece without totally demolishing the building in the process.
If you needed to move it you'd drain it, shut it off, dismantle it, then move the components.

Anyway, why are we discussing this when it's clearly not what the movie is about? We clearly saw what is obviously some Gozarian ritual site, complete with terrordog headed statues and what I assume is the Pompeiied remains of Shandor's cult. It's not an old leaking containment grid.

Yeah me too. I wouldn't say life isn't what I thought it'd be, I never really thought about the future until I realised I was in it, but it's certainly no fun these days. The cynic in me wonders if the structure of these 'heritage' movie trailers is playing (preying?) on that. Probably.

Well, the way to do it, would be to build a second containment unit at the new location and move the ghosts one at a time with traps or a comparable mobile unit.

Maybe Egon found a way to miniaturize the technology following the events of the second movie and didn't need to relocate entire large chunks of equipment from New York City to the countryside?

The containment unit from the first movie blew up. We never saw the containment unit from the second movie and, for all we know, Egon made one the size of a microwave.

Balls. Ghostbusters II is a paint-by-numbers, beat-for-beat remake of the original movie.

-Main narrative arc about (re)starting the business and (re)winning respect of the city.

-First big bust followed immediately a triumphant pronouncement by Venkman, then a busting montage.

-Second montage of ghosts running amok.

-Evil force targets Dana and kidnaps her.

-Dana is attacked at home via mundane household item.

-Nerd with crush on Dana gets possessed by evil force.

-Evil force localized around specific building.

-Finale features giant monster, albeit inverted in GB2.

-Scene where the Ghostbusters try to convince mayor of impending hell on Earth.

    -Ghostbusters arrested / committed.

-Main human antagonist is petty bureaucratic dick.

The 2nd one played more to the kid audience that unexpectedly found the first one/grew with the cartoon. The lack of group oral sex performed by ghosts is keenly felt.

As a fun tidbit, the Tobins Spirit Guide they released a few years ago notes Ray made frequent return visits to that location. You know, to keep tabs on the, er, goings on. Brings a different meaning to the term "Ghost Busting".
