Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

How awesome to have McNeill back as Paris! Not something I ever thought we would get. It's always nice when they are showing some love to Trek shows other than TNG as well.

He's in STO too, though sadly not the Delta Rising stuff that has the other VOY returnees (Tim Russ came back earlier as Admiral Tuvok, Delta Rising adds Jeri Ryan, Ethan Phillips, Garrett Wang and Robert Picardo). McNeill doesn't return until after this arc and doesn't interact with the others.

It actually surprises me how excited I am about the return of Tom Paris. Plus, I love the title they're giving this episode!
IIRC,
Campbell did say he's gonna be on LDS, right?
He said he was cast for Prodigy.
Yeah, that's a bit of a confusing matter.
Campbell did say Prodigy, but the way he described the plot, it sounded more like Lower Decks instead.

The Star Trek Logs Instagram feed has started posting Lower Decks logs. The first one is a log from T'Ana...

Somebody posted hers to YouTube where I played it (as I don't do Instagram).

Aww...poor kitten! She had it bad for her Bajoran boy toy!

It love how T'ana subverts the expectation of the catgirl trope by making her seasoned, world weary, somewhat unkempt and having a raspy voice.

Just noticed that Season 2 takes place in 2381. By Season 6, they'll have the Syth attack on Mars to address.

There's no reason they need to timeskip the series by a year with every new season, since they don't have to worry about animated characters aging or changing appearance.

I don’t know how long a crew member is expected to remain an ensign, but if they jumped forward a year each season I think we’d pretty quickly be getting into Harry Kim territory and wondering why they were all so unpromotable!
Typically, one spends two or three years as an ensign. As far as the Lower Decks characters go, we know Mariner is basically "unpromotable." Boimler only graduated from the Academy a year prior to season 1, while I get the impression Tendi was a new graduate in the season 1 premiere. I don't think we have any indication how long it's been since Rutherford graduated, but I doubt it's much longer than Boimler. So, even if this show does skip ahead a year each season, they can make it to the third season with everyone still realistically being an ensign.

Just need some more DS9 love/returnees - yes Mariner spent time there but it seems to be piggy in the middle since Seven is in Picard too

Rutherford is capable, but completely unambitious, Mariner has a track record fifteen miles long, and Boimler will apparently forever be cursed by plot inconveniences to demote him at certain opportunities (plus, the end of S1 did show that some of Mariner's disobedience already rubbed off on Boimler and is bound to return).

Tendi almost got in trouble big time this episode, although Mariner took the blame. She does seem suitably ambitious, but also the type to turn down promotions to stay with her friends. I think there's enough to work with to keep them pegged down for a couple more years, and always the likely possibility that they'll all get in big trouble, especially with hanging around Mariner and helping her with her side missions.

Lower Decks made me think about a live action comedy-based Trek series. I would love to see it one day.

I was just thinking that. Would love to see the actors play their animated characters in a live action thing. I wonder how fast they'd try to deliver their dialogue to match and how successful they'd be, since they could do a hundred takes in animation, but maybe not as much in live. (I think they'd nail it)

I hope they don't keep going forward one year a season. It kinda' wastes one of the main advantages of an animated show, and it'll have this comedy crew reacting to some heavy stuff in a few seasons...

^ It wouldn't surprise me if the LD timeline winds up being kinda lumpy, with them only moving forward substantially if the story needs it. In this case I suppose they wanted to mature the friendships and get some deeper interactions going.

It's a difficult balance to strike, they want that wackyness of rookies working their way through Starfleet, but it also gets tiresome if the characters don't grow. However if they grow too much it becomes a different show!
