Eve was definitely missed, her beautiful dynamic between her and Pine was a treasure in Into Darkness. Always hoped we would get more.

As much as I like Alice Eve, I've never really enjoyed romance in Star Trek.

I was glad we didn't have to sit through Kirk/Marcus and Spock/Uhura stuff in Beyond.

Besides, these movies don't have time for romance. It's on to the next action sequence!

I am generally opposed to romance in Trek, especially Trek shows as it is often very brief and seems to carry little weight at all. However, Kirk and Marcus is one of the few exceptions I would make because I think that Marcus is the person that would help Kirk resolve some of his behaviors and make a change.

Spock and Uhura were OK. I liked them more in 09 while ID languished and Beyond was just OK. But, I certainly appreciated the dynamic.

I'm miffed that after all this time there is 0 models of the Enterprise-A.
    Not from Eaglemoss.
    Not in Star Trek Online.

The designs in the film were cool.

The highly under subscribed Trekyards YouTube channel covered the “Linprise” with its designer.

To be honest I was hoping he would get the Excelsior at the end. Would have been a interesting change to the formula

    They support Axanar. Enough said.

    Or perhaps too much.

That's a topic we don't want to even get started on here.

I don't follow all the drama surrounding Axanar, but I don't see what's wrong with liking or supporting it.

There's a certain stereotype about ST fans. I've always felt TrekBBS has a certain toxic culture towards fans that fit that stereotype.

Again, that's a subject we won't be talking about here. Because it's off-topic for this forum, first and foremost, but also because it long ago became utterly impossible to discuss as something separate from all the drama.

As a subject, it belongs either in the Fan Productions forum or (preferably, due to its extreme toxicity) off TrekBBS altogether.

We also aren't discussing fans, fan groups, fan stereotypes -- that's not what we're about here. This forum is for discussing a particular set of movies, and topics related directly thereto.

As for this specific thread: "Beyond: the 5th Anniversary" is what it's about.

    So let's talk about that.

For me, it had also been 5 years of some uncertainty about how I should rate the movie. As an adventure on the crew's way, it works like a good and solid episode somewhere in the middle of the season. As a possible finale of the Abramsverse era or even for the crew, it would definetly suck in my eyes, because it's just too normal, not 'epic' enough for the way, this era stared back in its first movie.

So, for me, in some ways, Beyond stays and falls with the movie, they want to give us in 2023.

Spock/Uhura: I can't say I minded that. They actually handled it rather well, IMHO.

Marcus? She seemed to have more chemistry with McCoy than with Kirk. If there's any romance involving nuMarcus, I hope it's with Bones. She and Kirk didn't appear to like each other at all....

I did enjoy Beyond very much, although I admit I was a bit disturbed by what a monster a decorated MACO like Edison turned into. I'll repeat my earlier suspicion...that Edison had ties to the Terra Prime movement (from ENT). It would explain why Edison was so dead-set against "breaking bread with the enemy" (normally, a good soldier like him would realize the importance of following orders), and it might also explain why Starfleet stuck him on an insignificant ship like the Franklin: they wanted to get him out of the way.

No, thank you. Kirk and Marcus had plenty of chemistry for a blossoming relationship that could turn in to something more. Bones? Less so.
Shouldn't we be disturbed by that? He was alone, isolated, abandoned after being told his role didn't matter any more in the new Starfleet. Isolation does some damage to the human psyche. Feeling abandoned breeds resentment. What would you expect him to do?

Even in TOS, Stiles had deep resentment of the Romulans, and was immediately suspicious of Spock because of it. So, I felt he was closer in line and just went crazy due to obvious stressors.

Spock/Uhura could've been a good setup for the tried and true ST trope of logic vs. emotion, but it just seemed to devolve into Uhura whining. I also think the two never really had much chemistry. Their interactions were awkward IMO.

I might stir up some controversy by saying this, but I think romance is difficult to do in modern movies. Writers are afraid of doing something that could be considered sexist, or not indicative of a strong female character. Most of the writers are men; they don't want to touch this stuff. The Han/Leia romance we saw in ESB, you couldn't do that today.

As for Krall, I thought he was cool, but he was just another one-off villian. Just like the previous two films.

Romance nowadays is just painful in films now.

"Bland" is the word I would use to describe most romance in TV/film these days.

Beyond is my favorite of the three films, and I wish we had another one just to see Jaylah again. I did miss Marcus though, and I wonder if there was ever a reason why Eve never returned.

Bland implies a neutral reaction. I rarely have those. They are a distraction.
