Why do people hate Lwaxana Troi?

Draconarius King

Ensign
Red Shirt
I love her flamboyantly ostentatious attitude and watching Captain Pikard squirm is hilarious! I like her Lurch manservant as well. She is designed to annoy the characters in the show with her eccentricities and that’s her purpose. I can’t understand why people take her so personally!

But where is the study to demonstrate that and how exactly does it define ‘hate’ in this context? Any opinion on the negative side? Actual loathing?

A lot of similar threads start with purely anecdotal evidence and then it’s up to everyone to speculate in the vein of “Assuming there are (many) individuals who feel what I think is meant by ‘hate’ for this particular character, here’s why I think they do”, or “I can’t speak for everyone, but here’s how I feel about the character / I don’t actually hate them”. The discussion then becomes more about building castles in the air / answering a different question than testing the validity of a claim in reality and getting to the underlying reasons. I don’t like that.

Any negative opinions and she polls in most annoying character categories

In which polls, for example, and why use the word ‘hate’? The problem is that it can easily be interpreted as troubled individuals becoming seriously invested in fictional characters (which is easy to discredit), as opposed to critics having specific issues with how they are written.

(You can create a poll here also.)

Some characters rub certain viewers the wrong way. Neelix is another example of this. And some people weren't wild about Pulaski, though that might have been because of her and Data. I guess it didn't occur to them that TNG might actually be attempting () character development.

I don't mind her in small doses. Dark Page was an amazing episode with her. When they try to have her be a comedy figure throughout the whole episode it starts to get stale.

It's been ages since I watched 'Dark Page' but I watched 'Half a Life' recently and Lwaxana was not annoying at all, towards the end of the episode she was very likeable.

There are some episodes where she was annoying, but that was her character trait being an annoying egotistical person.
But quite a few were good episodes with her. Now her on. DS9 was more annoying.
But in general was a good character that was used sparingly.

She's not an interesting character and I never thought there was much chemistry between any of TNG cast members during its run. Her stories had no weight to them where I could see; there were topics which could have been something to see but I don't think the actress had the acting chops to convey the themes the Troi centric stories were trying to present. Even on DS9 I thought her character felt off with the cast, I guess the showrunners could've altered the wheel a bit and had the crew actually liked her around giving it a different take in contrast of the Enterprise crew didn't want anything to do with her.

Lwaxana didn't bother me in "Half a Life"... but man, the rest of that episode bugged the hell out of me. I wanted to throw things at that guy's daughter when she started pleading for him to come and cut his own throat like a good boy.

There's a list of Trek episodes that I rate as "one viewing was too many". That's one of them.

I'd say hate is a strong word. I've seen more contempt directed toward Wesley or Alexander over the years, but admittedly, she is not overwhelmingly liked, & many of the above mentioned reasons are valid enough. For me personally, I really don't care for her episodes, because they are mostly weak episodes, & honestly? I never really thought Majel was much of an actor. Even her best, Half a Life, is championed more by David Ogden Stiers, & in one really powerful moment by Michelle Forbes, who are both excellent actors, that deliver some real weight in that episode, which is almost unheard of in any other Lwaxana episode.

The majority of the time we see her otherwise, it is one note... one incredibly, deliberately, irritatingly loooong note, & that carpet wears thin. There's a reason why Harry Mudd wasn't in numerous TOS episodes. Ostentatiousness is a dish best served in short measure. Overbearing characters can overstay their welcome, especially when your standard dynamic, as in TNG's case, was not very accommodating to that imho, & they already had another recurring character that offered it in far better proportions.

I literally just finished a rewatch of TNG. I came out with more of a distaste for Doctor Crusher than Lwaxana or any other irregular character. Dark Page was the most outstanding use of Mrs. Troi.

Yeah, Half a Life is an example of one of her more serious episodes. She comes off better in those.
