MLB 2021 season: Corn-Driven Humidity

Cubs' Andrew Romine (IF) pitched in the 17-3 blowout loss to catcher and brother Austin Romine (finally off the "60 day" IL).

Might be the first time this happened. Frank Duncan, Jr. and his son, Frank Duncan III, of the 1941 Kansas City Monarchs are thought to have been the first father-son battery in professional baseball history. I see no mentions of pitcher/catcher siblings.
From MLB:
  • Per the Elias Sports Bureau, they became the first brothers to form a battery since Larry (pitcher) and Norm (catcher) Sherry for the Dodgers from 1960-62. They last partnered on June 28, 1962, against the Mets.
  • Per Cubs historian Ed Hartig, they became the first brothers to appear in the same game at the same time for the Cubs since Hal and Danny Breeden on June 4, 1971, against the Braves.
  • According to Hartig, the last brothers to play in the same game for the Cubs were the Reuschels (Rick and Paul), who did so on May 30, 1978, against the Expos.
The linked article has some more details on the moment, both past and present, as well as part of the press conference with Andrew Romine.

All around, a pretty cool moment for those two brothers.

It was cool, even if Andrew isn't a pitcher  A shame he lost the 0.00 ERA, that leaves only Rizzo.

Also glad to see Austin finally play. That 60 day IL stint was at least 4 months and every backup catcher except Chirinos was a total waste of space. Austin was doing really well in spring training.

This is some impressive salt from a Yankees fan:

Not to mention the other team is better. And what would a "gimmicky ballbark" have to do with anything. Typical New York fan. It's not possible that the Yankees just got beat by a better team. Must be a Trumpster.

And, if anything, the humidity--and it was ridiculously humid in eastern Iowa yesterday, something like 94 percent in Dubuque at the time of first pitch--would have deadened the balls.

I love it when Yankees fans act like the Commissioner's Trophy is automatically theirs by the Divine Right of Kings or some shit.

The best part: We all know he wouldn't be saying any of those things about the game if Britton hadn't given up that two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

One of the many, many reasons why I'm sick of Yankees fans.

I mod an MLB chat. Asstro and oDdger fans are much worse. I feel like many Spankees fans are like Lakers fans, only at the game to be "seen".

In fairness to Yankees fans, a washed-up Zach Britton coming out in the bottom of the ninth is probably enough to warrant Aaron Boone being left in Iowa before everyone gets on the bus to go back to Chicago. Dude was fucking money in Baltimore, but closers are probably the most fungible asset in baseball.

Yeah, send Boone out to find all those balls in the cornfield then run :guffaw:

"The New York Mets put newly acquired infielder Javier Baez on the 10-day injured list with back spasms before Friday night's game"

It was that 8 run home run swing again.

I've said it before, Baez is the one guy I wasn't sad to see go. He is one bad wrist or hand injury away from being an automatic out.

He hasn't gone on the IL every time, but he has been sat down for 2-3 days at a time, many times for this same thing. Core muscle pulls from those mammoth swings and misses. This time he did hit the ball, but same result.

Baez reminds me of Corey Patterson with a slightly better eye for contact, really.
