Question?

Is/are The Hot-lanta Braves the only team that still has a "live" organist playing tunes in their ballpark and hasn't gone totally electronic? Or have I missed something?

No, there are other ballparks with live organists.

I know the Yankees, Cubs and White Sox do it. I’m fairly sure a lot of others do as well.

It is NOT a lost art.

I had not noticed it, or even thought of it for a long time until the Reds announcers mentioned how the Braves organist guy would use "his" own walk-up songs for visiting players. Votto got Mr. Roboto. :guffaw:

Two-three jobs back (so, seven-eight years ago) I had a coworker whose son played the organ at the Mariners home games. He would also sit down with the players at the beginning of the season and help them choose their walk on music if they wanted any.

And a few years ago at a Mets/Reds game, whenever Johan Santana came to the mound, the GABP organist played songs by Santana (such as "Oye Como Va").

The Cubs have finally, mercifully, released Jake Arrieta, whose last act as a Cub was asking a reporter to take off his mask.

The only other option should have been stashing him in the bullpen, but I doubt we could get one decent inning out of him. He was washed up before we brought him back, and if the Cubs want to "look at the future", he definitely needed to go. A waste of a starting spot better used on Steele, Thompson or Abbott.

In fact, Davies could go to the BP to open up a starting spot for another one of those guys at this point. Davies has been utter crap most of the time as well. I hope the other returns for Darvish and Caratini are worth something.

In other strange news, Chris Davis of the O's retires, citing hip injury. So long to "Mr. Three of the worst records in MLB"
From 2015 through 2018, Davis led all major league players in strikeouts-per-at-bat
In 2018, he set the MLB record for the lowest batting average ever for a qualified player when he batted .168
In 2019, he set the MLB record for the most consecutive at bats by a position player without a hit, going 0-for-54...

I'll always have fond memories of Crush Davis absolutely terrorizing pitchers from 2012 - 2015, though.

And also tricking Dan Duquette into negotiating against himself and tacking on another year at $22MM to the contract offer when Davis hit free agency.

Yeah, a lot of players had good years before they got big contracts. Cubs have had their share of those. Maybe not terrorizing anybody, but a lot better in the "before" pic.

Well, Davis was popping Adderall and let his therapeutic use exemption expire, which is why he, unfortunately, fell off a cliff.

But regarding his FA contract, he did quite literally trick Duquette into bidding against himself. Davis never, ever wanted to leave Baltimore, so when he hit free agency after 2015 and Duquette was holding firm on a six-year deal, Davis told Scott Boras to do his thing and start planting some stories in the press. Duquette became convinced that Boston and Seattle were both willing to go to seven years on Davis (they weren't; neither team had any interest in him, but Boston was always happy to fuck Dan Duquette), panicked and went to 7 / 161. Davis happily signed.

I just did a little data dredging, and Jake Arrieta's ERA ever since the ban on sticky stuff is over 10.

Holy shit.

Yep, that's a mystery for sure, but he's looked bad all year. What about Darvish? I feel like he's been less effective since then.

Cubs' Andrew Romine (IF) pitched in the 17-3 blowout loss to catcher and brother Austin Romine (finally off the "60 day" IL).

Might be the first time this happened. Frank Duncan, Jr. and his son, Frank Duncan III, of the 1941 Kansas City Monarchs are thought to have been the first father-son battery in professional baseball history. I see no mentions of pitcher/catcher siblings.

Some GM will belly up to the bar and give him a couple of million dollars next year.

What a Great Opening pre-game for The Field of Dreams game in Iowa, White (Black) Sox vs. those Damned Yankees..

It brought tears to my eyes. :) Kevin Costner is going to throw out the first pitch.

I love that bit when the players walked out of the cornfield.

Fun facts:

- the field itself was made to mimic the dimensions of the field from old Comiskey Park
- there are about 8,000 seats...twice the actual population of Dyersville, IA
- Ed Harris was the "If you build it, he will come" voice in the movie

I wonder if there are any other cast members from the movie (besides Costner) in attendance.

Also, if somebody hits a dinger into the cornfield, how do they find it again?
