Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

I remember in my younger days getting a large soft drink when I went to the theatres. I eventually downgraded to a medium because large was making me need to piss halfway through, but as of eight years ago, I just stopped getting a soft drink all together because I was starting to get up two or even three times during the movie to piss, or if I did stay through the whole thing, I was barely holding it in by the end.

Although there was one time I went to the theatre on a really hot day in the summer when I was still getting over a stomach flu and was still combatting dehydration I got a medium Coke anyway. The one positive about my situation was I didn't need to get once during the movie as a result.
Just go in cosplay and wear a suit that reconstitutes your piss in to water

As this is the only live Dune thread do people mind me asking.
Should I read Dune even if the later stuff I have heard about like
never ending goalas and worm gods sounds stupid to me
I'm usually a near future Trek or Expanse fan and even the god stuff in BSG annoyed me so would I be wasting my time

Looks like by later stuff you mean the last three books by FH.

They're definitely a different flavour. The fourth book, the one with the
never ending goalas and worm gods (he's not a real god, just Leto pretending to be a real god, but he is a real worm)
is frequently listed as people's favourite, even over the original. Then the last two, which still has
never ending goalas
are generally regarded to be the weakest on the series and get pretty weird with sex (even compared to the earlier sexual weirdness).

I'd say give them a go, and if you don't like them, stop reading them. No harm, no foul.

Or just stick to the first book if that's all that interests you. It works perfectly fine on its own. Or stop at Messiah. Or stop at Children. All three novels have natural stopping points.

While Dune, the first book, can be condensed to a more or less straightforward action story - people take over control of a vital ressource, get betrayed and nearly wiped out only for the son to survive and become the prophesied messiah of the indigineous people, whom he leads into a guerilla war retaking what is rightfully his and in the process dismantling the entire powerstructure of the known human domain.

The book of course goes much more into the background and the mysticism of the Kwisatz Haderach and the later books go even deeper into sociology and politics with some action pieces here and there - it may not be for everyone.

I stopped after the first book, even though I loved it, partially because of that stuff you mentioned. The first book stands very much on its own and there's nothing wrong with just reading it.

While none of the later books really equalled the original, I think Messiah and CoD* are a worthwhile companion to said original as it wraps up Paul's overall story and serves to underline the point that no, Paul was never meant to be the hero of the first book...or I suppose for those that weren't paying enough attention the first time, act as a direct subversion of said assumption.

* Which honestly, I with they'd start publishing as a single volume as Messiah is soooo slim it's basically a novella.

Yeah...I get that. Like I said earlier in the thread, I tried reading Messiah after I read the original but I didn't get far because it didn't click with me. Something about the prose felt flat in comparison to the original.

That's what I was wondering. If I can read the first book and have a satisfactory end like you say then I will give it a go.
My thing about books is I love them but I'm naturally a very slow reader so I hate getting into a big series like this if the reviews don't look good to me but Dune has been in the back of my mind for a long time and the movie talk got me curious again.
Here's hoping I can walk quick enough to hit the bookshop after work

The only books that aren't self contained and don't conclude in natural stopping points are Heretics & Chapterhouse, and since FH died before writing the follow up to Chapterhouse it ends on a cliffhanger but is also a good place to stop:beer:

I guess some people really like Theatre Popcorn
I absolutely love theater popcorn and make no apologies for it. To me it is just the quintessential hang out snack. I understand not buying any of the other stuff, especially the boxed candy, but the popcorn is definitely the main reason I go to a film.

It's all apart of the experience for me.

For me it's the nightmare of every nutritionist and health expert - Nachos with Cheese Dip. Damn are they unhealthy ( especially if you combine it with a big jug of Coca Cola) but damn does it taste good. It never makes it until the movie, it's all gone before even the trailers start  For some reason i never buy this to eat at home, even if it's much cheaper so go figure, it's just a movie habit.

Exactly. It doesn't make a lick of sense but that's part of movie experience for me :D

I'll never forget my one trip to a US cinema. It was my first experience of free refills and as a 12 year old I never assumed there was a such thing as too muck coke but after a few shared refills of those giant cups of coke me and my cousin were so sick for the night

I go with my mom, and we get candy at the grocery store and smuggle it in in a purse she brings. They also sell cups that you buy and then can get it filled for $2 the rest of year. We get the new one the first time we go after theycome out and then use it until the next one comes out.

I love God Emperor of Dune. It's not something that's ever going to be adapted though unless they really go hard on the rebellion aspect and less on the talking worm chapters.

I think it could work well enough as a high production value TV show akin to Game of Thrones. It would be a challenge though to write it well enough to keep it engaging but i can't see it have more than 6-7 episodes in a single season if that.

The concept itself is intriguing and could be an awesome TV show - Paul and Leto II. seeing what must be done in order for humanity to survive and make sure it never comes into danger of going extinct against the backdrop of the more mundane events like the guerilla fighting in Dune, the Jihad in Messiah, the ramp up of Children of Dune with Leto II. starting on his Golden Path etc - then God Emperor and a time jump to Chapterhouse and Heretics with maybe a conclusion written by the showrunners ( however we all know how that turned out for Game of Thrones).

I know it's a pipedream and chances for it are extremely low but one can dream ;)

IGN looks to be doing daily content drops. I didn't watch the videos, but others have said they're new content.

Edit:. Whelp, looks like Covid is scaring studios again. Venom has been pushed back to Oct 15th, smack dab between Bond and Dune, due to Delta. My area is stuck at 82% first shot, 72% second shot, (eligible for both metrics) neither number hardly moving anymore, with the second shot crawling up a little faster than the first. New cases doubling every few days.
