Babylon 5

I won't say too much about the context because: spoilers, but in one of the Psi Corp novels there's actually a scene where you see Bester's POV as he "kills" someone's personality (then rebuilds a facsimile of it to serve his purpose.) It's really creepy and really underlines the idea that it's not just about altering memories and behaviours, it's actual murder in every meaningful sense, even though there's still a body with a pulse left behind at the end of it.

It also did a much better job in general (as did those books as a whole) to actually justify the level of societal distrust and prejudice directed at telepaths. A strong P-9 can give you a stroke, and there'd be no way to prove foul play without a P-12 to verify it.

If the P-9 gave a stroke to a "mundane" the P-12 probably wouldn't care to verify it, or make it known to the authorities if he did.

I don't think you can go quite that far. Otherwise, Ironheart's potential as a telekenetic assassin wouldn't be much of a change from the status quo (though Psi Corps did end up getting a lot more than they were aiming for with him).

Exactly, hence: distrust. ;)
I mean normal cops are bad enough when it comes to corruption, abuse of power and literally getting away with murder, but telepathic cops? Yikes!

It's something that the show never really did a good job of explaining--at least not at the ground level--but the novels did: telepathic people aren't distrusted because they're telepathic, they're distrusted because they're people. Any group of people in any kind of position of power over another group will invariably abuse said power, it's part of human nature. And since everyone knows that already, the moment one group gets an inherent advantage the natural instinct of everyone else is to instantly stomp on them, lest they themselves be stomped.

Same result, but different method. The advantage with doing it telekinetically instead of telepathically is that there would be ZERO trace in any kind of examination; telepathic or somatic.
Of course the ability for Psi Corp (or one of it's various internal factions) to assassinate someone without a trace isn't as powerful as merely the *idea* that they could. Even 10,000 teeks couldn't hold a population through strength of arms alone; but the fear of just one that could be anywhere at any time most certainly can.

That said, there's probably ways to brute force it--like say for example introduce a compulsive gag reflex as a response to the smell/taste sense of alcohol, so they physically cannot swallow a drink, or divert the craving to something else--but those would probably do more damage than good in the long run and don't actually cure anything. The person is still an addict regardless, they just can't do anything to fulfil the craving and without the ability to enact one's free will, the result would likely be mental illness, if not full on psychosis.
Kinda like "curing" a leaky tap by setting your house on fire.

That's pretty much exactly how Antabuse works, so perhaps we'll see since it's a legal treatment for alcoholism.

The high concentration of acetaldehyde that occurs when someone drinks while taking Antabuse triggers a very unpleasant reaction. The severity of the symptoms, which can range from mild to severe, depend on how much Antabuse and how much alcohol is consumed. The symptoms last as long as alcohol is in the body.

Yikes. Whoever came up with that doesn't know many alcoholics. I've known several chronic cases (the kind that might actually benefit from anti-addiction meds) and I can tell you right now that they would have put up with ANY kind of adverse symptoms if it meant getting drunk. Doesn't matter if drinking makes it worse; they'll just drink more. Hell, they'll down paint stripper if it comes to that!
I mean if the standard unpleasantness that comes from hard drinking doesn't dissuade them, I can't see that making much of an impact. You'd think a better vector would be going after the dopamine level altering mechanism that's responsible for addiction than some kind of targeted aversion therapy.

That's actually the theory behind the Sinclair Method that Claudia Christian advocates for. You take an endorphin-blocker just before drinking, and, eventually, your body realizes that alcohol has somehow stopped being fun.

The B5 geek in me is in awe that it's actually called the Sinclair Method. And then quickly tells me that it would have been even cooler if it was called the Garibaldi Method.

I liked this show a lot.
It is a bit different than ST and it has a certain kind of authenticity.
I may say I watched it like 2 times.
Zathras was one of my favorites :techman:

I really enjoyed Babylon 5.

I haven't watched it in decades though.
My wife didn't get on board in the first few episodes, so the DVDs gather dust...

So I noticed that at some time a handful of B5 and Crusade books that were formerly not easy to get were put on sale through Amazon, like the Crusade Behind the Scenes book of Joe Nazzaro interviews and the two Crusade Other Voices books of non-JMS scripts, so I bought those three. Anyone know if more of those books may show up on Amazon eventually? Or does JMS want to keep going full Scientology and require everyone to buy all the basic books, then all the intermediate books, before we can buy the ones that have the good stuff?

I would suggest that you write to Help@b5books.com and ask. But I'd also suggest that you don't pull that scientology comment on them. Just a friendly suggestion on the assumption that you actually want information.

In the end, to me it's just another TV show. I don't mind if other people want to feed their seemingly insatiable need for trivia about how it was made, how it diverged from its original roadmap, or the history of the series' fictional universe. I'm happy with just watching the best episodes in as high a quality as possible when I want to revisit them. It would be nice to know how Crusade would have developed had it run for five seasons but I suspect it too would have deviated from its intended path.

I just spent $150 for three books, so yes, I do want information. As for the Scientology comment, when you require people to buy a lot of other books before you get to the important stuff that not just anyone is allowed to buy... it's not an unreasonable analogy.

Did the people running the book operation know the remastered version of B5 was being released this year? It would have been a great opportunity to take advantage of the spike of interest in the show.
