Complimenting ENTERPRISE...

Farscape One

I'm not sure if anyone has done a thread like this, but I wanted to start one that lists all the GOOD that this series did. Some things from the very beginning.

1. Sense of wonder. Later TNG and VOYAGER episodes tend to stray away from the sense of wonder and awe at just seeing something brand new. From the pilot, that was something ingrained into the show... at least, the first two seasons. I'm very glad we got that feeling of awe, excitement, and wonder of the universe back that is such a big part of what the franchise is all about.

2. Sense of realism. There's a lot of little things that make the show feel real. For example, my wife and I just watched "MINEFIELD", and you can see the sweat on Travis' forehead because he was so nervous and being cautious while piloting out of the minefield. That sense of realism and 'you are there' feel is quite prevalent in this show. I think more so than the others.

3. More hands on approach. This might be more due to personal preference than anything else, especially since I find that with touch screens I have to fix FAR more typing errors than with an actual keyboard. But I SO much prefer the buttons and knobs vs. the touch screen displays of the 24th century shows. In fact, pretty much everything was hands on... it made the ship, devices, and show feel more real and tangible.

4. Archer is the classic hero. I like the fact that Archer is much more in the thick of things than some of the other captains. Very much like Kirk in that regard. The bad side is that he ended up getting knocked on his ass more often than all the others combined, but that is a danger when getting your hands that dirty. I respect that.

I've noticed there isn't a lot of good said about ENTERPRISE... at least, not as much as say TNG or DS9. I wanted to rectify that.

Anyone else have some good comments they want to share?

Thank you, Farscape One. This thread warms my ENT fangirl heart.

I like the not-so-sleek design of the ship. Kinda sub-like, claustrophobic in places. In the Captain's ready room, you have to duck to keep from hitting your head.

I love the uniforms, like NASA jumpsuits. Pockets! Zippers! No stretchy spandex stuff. (T'Pol's jumpsuits are Vulcan, blame them.) I wanted a jumpsuit as soon as I saw them. The away gear is jackets and caps! So cool!

I love that the Captain of the ship took his dog along, like a sub captain would. Porthos is adorable, plus he sort of puts an exclamation point on the idea that the Captain is a loner, married to his ship, with his stalwart companion being his dog. There are many moments when you see Porthos comforting him through a rough patch - like in "Shockwave," when Archer holds Porthos as he goes through the casualty list.

No replicators. Real, recognizable food. Beer. Meals in the Captain's Mess, and watching Archer feed scraps to his pooch.

I thought Archer's character arc is pretty daring - an enthusiastic and idealist explorer getting kidney-punched by the unfriendlies out there in space, going to hell and back in a war, and emerging a seasoned veteran, negotiator, and statesman, while setting precedents for future generations to follow. And oh yes, he saves the galaxy.

Man, Archer gets beat up a lot. Very "Shore Leave" Kirk of him. But he always gets back up.

I love that Surak's katra ditches the rebel Syrran and chooses Archer to find the Kir'Shara.

Shran. Jeffrey Combs playing Shran. No more words need be said.

I love the character interaction. Even when an episode is not really working plotwise, there's always some cool scene with the characters. Hoshi teaching Archer how to insult like a Tellarite. Archer and Travis up in the sweet spot as Travis grieves for his dad. Archer and Trip watching polo together - Trip is the bestest friend ever.

Phlox and his living menagerie of natural medicinal remedies. Chasing after the bat. Phlox taking Porthos when Archer goes off on his suicide mission.

T'Pol comforting Porthos as he grieves over his lost master.

T'Pol's character arc is a challenge too, but I think it makes her a more compelling character. Her "flaw" (emotions too close to the surface) is how she's able to stay on Enterprise and become part of the crew. Echoes of the half-human Spock, both struggling with emotions they can't get rid of. I wanted to watch her figure out how to manage her emotions, but, ah well. At least we see a hint of it, with old T'Pol in E2.

I'm sure I'll think of a million more things. :)

Thank you. I'm glad this inspired you.

Those are some really great ones. I also loved the look of the ship, inside and out. The uniforms were great, too.

Jeffrey Combs is a win whenever you bring him into something.

Archer setting things up for future Starfleet captains is another thing I loved. Many have said he didn't seem qualified because he made so many obvious mistakes. Of course he's going to make a lot of mistakes. It's the first Starfleet ship going out to explore.

While some might put him in a bad light ("A NIGHT IN SICKBAY" is often cited, and it's hard to argue that.), he learns from those errors.

And people seem to forget that if not for him, the stones would never be laid to make the Federation.

Great point about Porthos underlining the fact it's lonely at the top. And Porthos is a good pal! (Despite what many people may say, dogs ARE a great friend. They really do sense your moods, and do try to comfort you in their own way. They have a lot of personality, too. Frankly, I find dogs are better than a LOT of humans out there.)

The greatest compliment I can give is this:

I lost interest in the show fairly early on in its original airing. I didn't dislike it (in fact, I defended it to a lot of people at the time)...but I was just burned-out on Star Trek and ENT at the time didn't feel different enough to me to continue to hold my attention. I think my disappointment was exasperated by the fact that the show was supposed to be markedly different, and ended up not being so, at least to the expectations I had built.

SO......I decided to re-visit (and in large part, watch for the first time) the series 2 years ago. I enjoyed the heck out of it. I think ENT suffered being released when it was...when there had been a LOT of Star Trek, and most of it was pretty much the same thing. Having time and separation from that period helped me appreciate ENT much more. It seemed fresh, fun, and had a more pioneering style to it than VOY or TNG. It also wasn't as stiff and preachy as those two series could be. I think it looked great visually. I also think, much like DS9, they had a nice cast of recurring characters they brought in with varying frequency (Soval, Forrest, Shran) that kept the show interesting. Oh, and I actually like "Faith of the Heart".... ;)

Overall, it's not my favorite Star Trek show, but it gets the job done and I am actually looking forward to another re-watch.

It's a great show. I agree with much of what has been said but I'll add a few.

The NX-01 is a great looking ship, inside and out.

There's a genuine feeling that the cast like being together and though much is made of Travis, I don't think there's a weak performer amongst them.

Also the show took big risks in it's retooling of itself. As a document it's one of the most interesting of the Berman shows because they lacked a lot of the luxuries (ie: a pretty much guaranteed 7 season run or a lack of executive meddling) that previous shows have. The result of this is a show that's always reaching for greater things, even if it seldom grasps them. I think there's something beautiful about that.

You know what as well? I love the theme and like to sing it when I drive my motorbike to work.

Glad you enjoyed is VGR23!! Your experience sound like it validates the "franchise fatigue" theory.

For me, I didn't see a single episode when it aired. I purchased the series (back when it wasn't cheap :wah:) and watched it on DVD. I couldn't imagine having to wait until next week (or longer at times I'm told) to watch Season 3. I binge watch season 3 before I knew what binging was :guffaw:

I thought 'Faith of the Heart' was horrible and sacrilege. :angryrazz: I so love the operatic themes of Star Trek through out the years that this "new" thing didn't set well with me at all. One benefit for me was I was watching on DVD and could skip it. I did enjoy the visuals though.

I thought that Captain Archer "looked" the part of our first Star Fleet captain. Right out of the gate he looked comfortable in the part. Janeway, Sisko, and Picard all took awhile to appear comfortable in their roles.

I thought 'Broken Bow' was the best opener in the in the spin-off era.

The look of Enterprise was awesome and age appropriate for the time. As a 40-year Navy guy I thought the interior was realistic. Cramped, low ceilings at places, ladders throughout the ship to include access to the shuttles. Just awesome!

Loved the entire cast!

'Enterprise' suffered from everyone's preconceptions. They should have done this or that, the ship looks too advanced, blah, blah. I just went with it from the start. I liked the slower pace.

I'm not going to go into all the different episodes here, but that first DVD in Season 2 is my favorite DVD in the entire series!! Shockwave P2, Carbon Creek, Minefield, and Dead Stop.... what outstanding Trek here.

Love the development of the Archer/T'Pol relationship throughout the series. They progress from "You have no idea how much I'm restraining myself from knocking you on your ass" to Archer learning to put aside his prejudices and trusting her, to T'Pol leaving the Vulcan Science Directorate to join Archer and his crew, to the hug in TATV. Just a wonderful relationship. Best, most developed Captain/1st Officer relationship in all the spin-offs.

I thought the addition of Phlox to to the crew was fantastic. Loved the character and John's portrayal. My only regret is that we lost crewman Cutler. She would have made a great personal assistant for Phlox in medical.

Folks complain about the first 2 seasons; I do not. I enjoyed them better than the first two season of any of the spin-offs.

Season 3 was a great, suspenseful ride. Archer and the Enterprise were put in a horrible, almost impossible, extremely stressful situation and they made it through! I'm glad is was a bumpy ride that had Archer stepping over lines, etc. One of the best seasons in all of trek.

Now that I've said that, I think season 4 is the BEST season in all of trek!! Just fantastic!!

DS9 get's lauded for it's reoccurring characters, and it should - but Enterprise should as well. ADM Forrest, Soval, Shran, Silik... all were outstanding!

We learn more about the history of the Vulcans, we learn more about the Andorians and actually go to Andoria!

Trip was an awesome engineer! I really enjoyed the T'Pol/Trip budding love affair - I just wish they had seen it through. They should have ended up together.

Enterprise had hit it's stride just as much if not more than the other spin-offs and had earned (quality wise) more seasons. Hell, in my opinion ENT could have been the first 10 year spin-off taking us through the Romulan War right up to the birth of the Federation.

Favorite character: T'Pol
Favorite episode: Carbon Creek
Favorite trilogy: The Forge/Awakening/Kir'shara
Favorite "German" episodes: Stormfront P1&2
Favorite Mirror Universe: In a Mirror Darkly
Favorite Enterprise: NX-01

Those are not just in 'Enterprise', that's all of Trek!

By season 4 I think Enterprise managed some of the best pacing by ST for narratives. Trek has fallen into the problems of excess serialization and overt limits via one episode plots before, but Season 4 gave its stories room to breathe while still not wearing out their welcome most of the time. Its one of the many pities of the show's cancelation because it felt like it had finally hit its groove in doing justice to its concepts.

Ironically, the budget slashing for season 4 helped the series. It's a big reason why we got so many 2 and 3 parters... it spread out the cost of the episodes per story. It fit like a glove, because that format was really great.

You don't need a big budget to tell a good story.

Ha ha, I'm hitting "Like" on every post in this thread. I've never done that.

I didn't watch the first 3 seasons live. I binged them before S4. When you don't have to wait for the next ep (or miss it altogether cuz UPN preempted it), the overall story arcs are so much clearer, easier to appreciate. Archer's journey, T'Pol's journey. The evolution of their partnership, from the opening when Jon can't stand her, to later when they are so loyal and devoted to each other. I agree with you, @Yanks, they make a great team. And Trip/T'Pol were a wonderful metaphor for the development of Human/Vulcan relations, as well as a preview of Sarek and Amanda. That's why the artificial, totally stupid slap-in-the-face "breakup" made no sense at all. What the hell were they thinking?

@Richard S. Ta, I agree about the show always reaching for greater things. This show was never comfortable, never assured of a full run, never had the support of the overall fandom. They had to scrabble and retool and squish 4 seasons of ideas into their last season. You can see the hints of what might have been, which makes what we got, and didn't get, bittersweet. But I'm so glad we got that 4th season.

I agree about the production design, the direction, the music. Top notch. What a beautifully crafted show.

Yanks, I also agree about ENT suffering from everyone's preconceptions. I came into the show so late, and without seeing any of the negativity online (I didn't join the online Trek community till the summer before S4), that I wasn't tainted, and I think that's a big reason that I enjoyed it so much.

Initially, I struggled with Enterprise and I put that down to nothing more complicated than the visual differences between it and 90s Trek, I found the changes too jarring. Of course, I realised later that those changes were it's strengths. The first deep space explorers' suits probably will have more in common with NASA outfits than TNGs smart-casual wear. Equally, comfort will be a luxury too expensive to bear so no carpets and lounge-type bridges.

I think what I'm trying to say as a compliment is that, watching Enterprise now, it's probably the most realistic Trek there's ever been on TV.

I also didn't know about the fandom not liking the show until many years after it ended.

Any issues I had were literally just me. But there was more good than bad, which is why I enjoyed ENTERPRISE as much as I did durung its original run. Rewatches help me appreciate it better, though rewatches for any of my shows tend to do that. (All ST shows, SG shows, B5, ANDROMEDA...)

Watching with my wife, who is seeing for the first time, makes me love the shows even more. Not only because I get to see someone else watch it for the FIRST time and love it... but that I MADE MY WIFE A TREKKIE!!!

Best. Victory. Ever.

I'm going to be honest...

I prefer ENTERPRISE to both DISCOVERY and PICARD. I enjoy the others and they have some good things about them, but I don't feel the urge to rewatch as greatly as I do the previous shows. LOWER DECKS is actually an exception, though. My favorite of the Kurtzman era so far, by a good margin. My opinion might change after the new seasons of each show finishes.

Do I think they are better than ENTERPRISE? I can't and won't say either way, as it's unfair to make that call yet, since none of them have finished their runs. Even after they end, is it a fair comparison given how short the seasons are?

DISCOVERY can have 7 seasons and still have less episodes than ENTERPRISE. Same with LOWER DECKS. And PICARD will be done after a 4th or 5th season, at best, simply because of Sir Patrick Stewart's age.

Fleshed out the 22nd century. For once, this century was shown onscreen and not just talked about in Trek

The concepts ENT came up with were great, from the characters to new species to settings to events. Shame TPTB couldn’t get out of their own way and let the series flourish…

Did not insult the intelligence of the audience when it came to ship damage. When Enterprise got damaged, it carried over to the next episode.

Story arcs were good. Not just the Xindi arc and the arcs from S4, but the entire Vulcan-Starfleet relationship and Vulcan-Andorian arc, and the events surrounding the Romulan mines (“Minefield” & “Dead Stop”). ENT had a rough idea as to what it wanted to be from the beginning.

When ENT set out to create a great and memorable musical piece, as Archer would say, they put it over the top. Particularly:
  • Borg attack/Borg attack 2 from “Regeneration”,
  • Tholian Web/Abandon Enterprise/Defiant Trapped/Defiant Fight Back/Defiant To The Rescue/Avenger Attacks from IAMD
  • Showdown/Back To The Past from “Twilight”
  • Azati Prime battle
  • Drive Enterprise from Orbit from "Awakening"
  • Warp 5.2 from “Affliction”
  • The final bit from TATV
They are among my most favorite pieces of music in Star Trek ever. I play them whenever I can.

Tried to be down to earth, ignoring the technobabble, and acknowledge parts of Earth’s culture, like Superman.

Fits in the canon. Nothing in ENT is a particularly egregious error in regards to canon, even before Coto came along. The series just needed time to explain itself.

Even though a part of it was featured in the the finale, and the full version can only be found online, Archer is a natural at saying the captain's oath.

I thought Season 3 was some of the best character development Star Trek has ever had. At the start of the season you have an angry Trip, a neive Captain, an arrogant T'Pol, and a frightened Hoshi. At the end of the season, Archer has changed to the point where he questions why they are even out in space, Trip has finally gotten over Liz's death to the point where he doesn't seem as angry anymore, and what Hoshi was put through really hardened her. You can argue all you want about the plot or if it makes sense, but what it did to the characters was the best development since DS9.
