Sounds like Burton's first episode didn't go so well but then he approached the remaining episodes differently. https://www.avclub.com/levar-burtons-wife-gave-him-a-frank-assessment-of-his-j-1847356072
Here's the full AP interview instead of A.V. Club's snippets and misattribution to the Seattle Times. The whole thing is worth reading.
Yup, he was a bit nervous for the first episode, but here's hoping that chat with his wife helped him out for the remaining four.
The way I look at it, the other guest hosts know they're only filling in and they're not in contention for the job of permanent host so they're relaxed and having fun. Levar wants this job and this is his chance to show/prove to the producers and the fans that campaigned for him that he can fill Alex's shoes; so he's understandably nervous on his first night.
Well, Burton's first night as guest host was one for the record books.... in that one contestant scored a record-low negative $7,400, breaking the previous record of negative $6800 set in 2015.
Not as wired as yesterday, but Levar needs to chill out a little. Part of Alex's appeal was that he he was always laid back and easy going. Sanjay Gupta has been the best guest-host so far IMHO.
I thought he did a decent job for his first episode. I mean, sure, he tripped up a few times, but I think anyone finding themselves hosting one of the most popular shows would feel it a daunting experience. I'm sure being up on that stage made him choke up at the implication of what he was finally doing. What I ended up liking the most so far has been the voice. He has a nice clear even voice that's easy to hear, and his enunciation is good.
I agree he did much better today. I think part of the problem is LeVar's high energy is a jarring contrast to the low energy of the returning champion, Matt. LeVar paired a lot better with Barb and I was really rooting for her to win today.
I thought his cadence was too sing-song on the first night. Unfortunately, he is only doing the one week with all the episodes taped on the same day.
Matt's personal detail about being a "radical minimalist" seems to extend to his personality. He's sooooooo booooooring, and beginning all of his answers with "what" (even when it's a person!) is grating. LeVar did a lot better today.
