News Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director's Cut is being restored in 4K, launching first on Paramount+

I think it would be economical to do the SLV as an MOD disc, since it's more of a "niche" title.
It's cheaper for the studio/distributor because those are typically on cheapo DVD-R discs, and they have very basic menu authoring and no extra features.

I don't need 2160p resolution to enjoy a movie. I want to watch a film, not immerse myself in a 3D holodeck world where I get to mind meld with V'Ger myself.

People would complain it wasn't on 4K. The theatrical of TMP and the DE will be.

P+ offers 4K streaming. The majority of the footage would already be in 4K through the DE and the theatrical. Someone upthread suggested a total of six minutes would not be in 4K. I believe all of that footage is available in 1K from the deleted scenes from the DE DVD. Upscaling that footage would help. It probably wouldn’t match perfectly but it might be close enough.

Regardless, it’s probably not going to happen.

If Daren R Dochterman is having to do a new CGI Enterprise, maybe he could release the last version as orthos?

I'm thrilled. This is one time I'm happy to admit being wrong. Now to buy a 4K player...

RAMA
That's funny, because I'm debating do I want to go and buy a Blu-ray player. Or just have it on Paramount+.

I haven't bought any physical media in over a decade (and don't currently own any either), but a Blu-ray (this director's edition) would be a nice compliment to the Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Inside the Art and Visual Effects coffee table book, I think.

I'm one of those people where Star Trek: The Motion Picture is the only Star Trek movie that I like outside of the first two JJ movies. Of course, I'm not sure how large of a group of people have that particular "like" list, but there it is... :)

I remember as a kid all of my friends liked Star Wars (like everyone did), but I was like, "No, Star Trek: The Motion Picture is better." I was never going to win that of course, but whatever. :)

I never realized that The Motion Picture was the first time that 23rd century Earth appeared on screen. I guess that I why consider it Star Trek fully realized. I look it as the most complete vision of Star Trek.

Anyway, too bad they will almost certainly never make a "cerebral" Star Trek movie like that ever again.

I know we’re all hopeful for a physical release of a blu-ray or 4K DE disc, but is it actually confirmed to be coming? The theatrical, yes. But I’m pretty sure all we know for certain is the DE will be on P+.

That's a good point... from what we have seen, the packaging for the I - IV movie collection on UHD disc doesn't say what cuts of the movies are included, or anything about the extra features.
I do find it interesting that it shows TMP as "Not Rated" per MPA (formerly MPAA), whereas the theatrical release was rated G and the Director's Edition on DVD was rated PG. So maybe that's an indication of a slightly different cut for the UHD format.
Blu-ray.com shows this release includes "4 movies, 5 cuts," but I'm not sure if that has officially been confirmed.

Edit: on further reading, the startrek.com article says TWOK will have the theatrical and director's cut, but the others will only be theatrical versions: https://www.startrek.com/news/celeb...ry-with-these-new-star-trek-releases-and-more

As for possible individual releases after this, who knows?

There have been orthos of the DE Enterprise model out for ages. Here's a copy on Memory Alpha.

And here's our first look at the model being used in the 4K DE. Can't tell much from that angle, but it looks like the neck and torpedo bay have been refined, and there's some detailing behind the windows, though it's hard to tell if it's just colored blotches or actual window-boxes.

With the power of five applications (Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, VLC Player & Final Cut Pro), I've decided to celebrate this news with a recreation of the title as seen in the Director's Edition in HD! (Will probably do a 4K edition if I can figure out more on how to add more sparkle to it).

It's not a 100% recreation and that was on purpose. When studying the title with a TMP Appreciation group, I was informed that the weight of the S and the K in the title (Starting and ending letters) were not the same 'weight' as the rest of the letters in the title. i.e. The S and K simply had their overall scale enlarged. This is across the board with the Director's Edition both in the film and it's poster (It also happens on the 40th Anniversary poster). You'll note that the top portion of the S is thicker than the top portion of the T right next to it. What I did with this title was a bit of a mixture. I kept the weight of the top of the letters the same, but kept the bold look for the bottom streaks. That way you have a more consistent style for the top while maintaining

There is still a process to turn a theatrical movie negative into a 4K digital presentation. They can't just put the film reels into a projector. The theatrical in 4K will be ready for launch in September 2021. On Paramount+ , replacing the current TMP theatrical. And in 4K sets of discs.

They still have the original elements created for the DE DVD, but they were finalised as DVD resolution for the commercial release, ie. the top-selling media of the day, DVD. The DE team is now working with the new 4K render of the theatrical version and replicating their DE additions, also for 4K.

Regardless, it’s probably not going to happen.

The DE happening right now, due for release in 2022.

Edit: No news on the SLV.

It is the DE team's understanding that physical media versions of the 4K DE will be released, but no date has been specified. The Paramount+ 4K of the DE is definitely sometime in 2022.

Work on the TMP DE has commenced, but it is not due to be released until 2022. So the 4K set coming this September cannot include that DE.
