Tokyo Olympics 2020 - Taking place in 2021

Now officially without spectators.

Most of the competitions in the middle of the night - at least in my country.

No Phelps. No Bolt.

Throwing javelins - this is where Germans are good at. Track and field we can watch at least at lunch time.

Soccer. Track and field. Swimming. Everything else is not interesting to me. Corona has dampened my expectations a bit.

This is a bad idea all around. Japan is in no state to host the games...but at the same time, I realize the overwhelming financial commitment they've poured into these Olympics so I'm not surprised they're pushing forward.

Not sure if I'm going to bother watching this year.

Apparently the beds in the Olympic village are to be made of cardboard - to keep athletes from having sex.

Is this really a thing?

55 covid cases already in the Olympic village. UEFA pushed the Euro Championships (soccer) through - with audience.
With many covid cases left and they didn't care. So why should IOC bother either, even without audience?

Keeping your distance, quaranined athletes and so on. There will be more covid cased - and doping cases on top of that.

There will be much trouble with athles taken out of competitions due to positive covid cases.....

Russia is unlikely to ever be banned for everything. They sue themthelves back into competition. Putin expects them to be Nr. Uno in the overall medal ranking in the end.....

Sure it would have been dissapointing for the atheltes who train for years and an olympic medal is the ultimate prize but would it have been best just to push all the games back i.e.

2024 Tokoyo
2028 Paris
2032 Los Angeles

They had to happen, in some form. Too much money involved to just push everything back four years.

Which highlights how way too much money is poured into the Olympics and how it is rarely beneficial for the host city...in the best of times.

We're definitely not in the best of times now.

I agree. The IOC, FIFA and other sports entities are nothing but bandits robbing cities at this point.

I've said it before, I'll say it again...they should pick one city to be the permanent host for the Olympics.

And that city should be Berlin.

100% true, Should choose 1 city for summer, 1 for Winter. and hold them there. Its been a fiasco for the past couple times. Upcoming is China.

I love the idea of the Olympics taking place in the same city every iteration. It saves cities from bankrupting themselves for little to no benefit, and it hews closer to the ancient Olympic Games which always took place in (shockingly) Olympia.

Basing the Summer Olympics in and around Athens seems like a no-brainer, of course. The Winter Olympics are a little more difficult. You could go with Stockholm since that was the home of the Nordic Games, which were the precursor to the modern Winter Olympics. The first Winter Olympics took place in Chamonix, France, but I feel like that locale's a little too small to handle hosting a modern Olympic Games every four years. Maybe Geneva, instead? It's very close to Chamonix, offers an identical climate and topography, and it's a much bigger city.

I don't know if having the Olympics in one city every 4 years will work - as it's something special to have the games in your city/country. I still remember Sydney, as I attended a few events when I lived there. It was a great vibe in the city. I would support if a number of cities that rotate each Olympics each time. Spreading the games across multiple regions and eliminating the 7 year polling is a good idea. For example, Brisbane will hold events on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts (these are about 100km north and south of Brisbane).

I wasn't gonna watch these games, but kinder got hooked in after watching some softball yesterday. I've seen football games of different codes here - have no spectators. And they have worked. The Olympics can have success without crowds also - as now we are just cheering from our houses.

No, that has been disproven. A cute Irish gymnast started jumping up and down his bed to demonstrate how sturdy the beds are.

Speaking of gymnastics, it's one of two events I look forward to watching every four years. Swimming is the other.

ETA: The bedframes are in fact made of recycled cardboard, but strong enough to support rigorous intercourse. :p

And speaking of sex at the Olympics, I was watching a segment on CNN covering the topic. I thought, this is not a new phenomenon. Athletes, I'm sure, are getting it on with their spouses, partners, or significant others wherever the Olympic Village allows for it. It could be within or across teams, or even countries. A member of Australia's women's volleyball team could be crushing on a Spanish soccer player. The possibilities are endless.
