MLB 2021 season: Corn-Driven Humidity

Honestly, at this point I'm having a hard time caring WHO pays for the new stadium...just so it gets built.

And like I said, if the A's bolt, that just proves the system works. Oakland won't build them a new ballpark, they'll go somewhere else that will. Easy peasy. If Oakland doesn't want the fans, or the revenue they bring...hey, it's their funeral.

Worked for the Nats, didn't it?

There’s a lot of money in the world of sports. The athletes are rich, so are the owners, and the teams are worth fortunes.
Despite all that, when teams need new stadiums, the owners cry poor. They make the public pay, or they threaten to move. That’s why there are so many taxpayer-funded stadiums in the United States.
Professional sports teams are raking in the money, but taxpayer money in these 15 cities paid for new billion-dollar stadiums. Georgia State University tracks the trends and crunches the numbers to find out which cities have taxpayers spending the most on sports stadiums.

So we thinking Las Vegas A's? Montreal Expos?

I'm hoping it's Montréal, but Vegas seems equally likely.

At least Montréal has the advantage of already having an existing stadium for the Expos II to use (while the new one is built). And better weather. :p

Plus, it would kill once and for all that idiotic plan for the Rays to play half their games up there.

There is absolutely no public support for taxpayer money to build a new stadium, and Montreal's economy is still in the trash due to COVID; there's no private investment to be had.

And the argument that "public financing for stadiums is a good thing, because it means net revenue for the municipality" was completely and utterly debunked more than fifteen years ago.

Assuming I can work out transport to and from (Des Moines is a three-hour drive from Dubuque, Iowa, and I can't drive because of a bad leg), yours truly will be the voice of the AAA Iowa Cubs for one inning on Saturday, July 31 (my 37th birthday). A friend of mine in Virginia worked it out for me, knowing that my dream ever since I went to college in 2002 was to call baseball.

I want to hear a tape, of the game not your bitchin' drive o/c.

Assuming I can work out transport, the team said they'll provide a recording.

Edit: And just like that, a certain someone in my life said she's taking me to Des Moines on the 31st.

I am looking forward to it, and giving you shit about your "descriptions." ;)

Have a good time. :techman:

As far as the A's, there's no reason to assume they would want to change their name. The team definitely owns the Athletics name from it's Philly and KC days, and I'd assume the Nats still own the Expos name.

Manfraud was quoted in one story as saying LV would be an option if the A's decided to move. There's no data yet for the Raiders as far as fan interest what with 2020 being the year of the empty stadium, so I'd wonder what kind of numbers either team would get.

AFAIK, no, they don't.

In fact the Nats seem only too eager to forget they ever were the Expos. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if a new team took the name.

There's no legal reason I'm aware of this can't happen, anyway. I mean, look at the NFL's Cleveland Browns. The old Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens, but this didn't prevent an expansion team from assuming the Browns name.

It boils down to what entity or person has ownership of a name. Somehow Cleveland had the rights to the Browns name, like Seattle had the rights to Supersonics. I have no idea how that sort of thing works, but if the owners at the time had the rights to "Browns", they probably would have kept the name.

Whereas the A's have moved twice and taken that name with them.

Most google hits indicate that Loria and/or the Nats hold thew rights to "Expos".

It is a case by case basis, it seems. The Titans kept the IP and records for the Oilers when they moved to Nashville. As part of the agreement to move to Baltimore, Art Modell left behind the Browns name and records. The Rams have been the Rams starting in Cleveland starting in 1944.

I’m pretty sure the Nationals own the Expos’ IP, and would have to be negotiated with in order for a new Montreal team to take on the name.

They do; the Nats sometimes wear Expos throwback uniforms, and count the Expos' history as part of their own. If Montreal were to claw back the Expos' IP and records, that would leave the Nats with nothing before 2005, since the history of the Senators belongs to the Twins (1901-1960) and Rangers (1961-1971).

Not even sure where the A’s would play in Las Vegas? They just opened a 10,000 seat Triple-A park in 2019. Hard to see an MLB team playing there for three or four years while a new stadium is built, that doesn’t take into account if Las Vegas and the state of Nevada want to help pay for yet another stadium when they are still paying for the Raiders’ new dome.

LOL!! Sold out stadiums would be a nice feeling for those A's players, even if it is only 10,000 seats.

Loria is long gone from MLB ownership, but the Nats hold the rights to all things Expos. (Remember, literally the entire front office, including equipment, got moved from Montreal to Washington.) With the Browns, that was a condition of the NFL allowing Modell to ship the entire team off to Baltimore; he had to forfeit all rights to the Browns' name, history and statistics.

Las Vegas is just Manfred farting around because the owners desperately want another round of expansion fees to pad their checking accounts. MLB is still deathly afraid of having a team in the city because of the sport's long and sordid history with gambling.

That being said, Oakland is more than right in telling the A's to fuck off for trying to extort a gigantic mallpark monument unto their glory. As I've said in the past, the most frustrating thing about this situation is that it was literally a solved problem (the A's would move to San Jose; they had private financing lined up, a stadium designed, and MLB's approval, and then the Giants shat the mother of all bricks) years ago.

Only just...

Yeah, well, the Dbacks and Rays have nothing before 1998, so the Nats can get over it. :p

srsly, even if the Nats own the rights to the Expos name (which I honestly didn't know), I don't see them raising a stink if Montréal gets another team. I think they'd be OK with giving the name back. It's not like we'd see "Montréal Baseball Team" on ticket stubs.
