You know that every Star Trek series have their own extraordinary character that has wow factor in the show. These Extraordinary are unique characters that have special ability / simply different from others. Like in TOS, it was Spock. While in TNG it was Data.

I'm not asking who was the strongest, like who is the most powerful, Spock's Kamehameha or Data. But I'm asking about the character. Which are the best unique / extraordinary character to you. And which are the most memorable one? For me, it is Data, as he was the most memorable unique character in Star Trek franchise for me.

My reason is, because he was the first unique Star Trek character that I watch in Star Trek. He was funny, innocent, and very curious. But at the same time very dependable, and often become the problem solver in the story. Although he has not Spock's flair of wow in TOS

So what about you, and why?

Spock, and it's not even close. Like, not even within the same region.

Spock was the model...a truly unique and classic fictional character who resonated (and still resonates) with millions of people. Even people who never watched or cared about Star Trek know and understand who Spock is, 55 years after he first debuted.

All of these other characters are derivative of Spock. Yes, some of them are compelling, but in all honesty....they are not even close. They were all attempts to re-capture the same thing that Spock brought to Star Trek back in the 60's.

Morn. His list of achievements and his interactions with well, everyone, are two great to speak of.

  • Spock (Original Series) - once the figured him out with the emotionless aspect, he became an iconic template.
  • Data (TNG) - he's not as much a Spock clone in seasons 1 and 2 when he's more like Pinocchio with Spock-like superficiality, something that's grown on me a lot since 1987. Season 3 has him pretty much set taut as "I am an android".
  • Odo (DS9) - more the uptight stern security dude figure. Works great with Quark.
  • The doctor (Voyager) - McCoy "I'm a doctor not a ___" clone combined with "computer-made sentience/hologram rights" redux of Data's nonsense sentience shtick as TNG progressed. When those moments aren't at the fire, he's actually quite wonderful. Great onscreen chemistry with Seven as well, and she seems closer to the "Spock trope" than he does - noting her background (Borgified and robbed of her individuality for so long that she acquired traits I've found relatable, but I digress) is probably Trek's most innovative. "Living Witness" is one of his best outings.
  • Dr. Phlox (Enterprise) - haven't seen enough of him
  • Saru (Discovery) - pretty cool concept, in how he's able to sense death

Yes, you're right. Spock is the model of all these unique characters. He appeared again in Discovery and the new Abram Film, and his unique or extraordinary appearance has disappeared in the new series. But those are not TOS. in TOS he was the only Alien on board, with some kind of superhuman / surprising trait to us, the viewer. Like when he was unconscious and McCoy said, his life was in danger, but suddenly he wake up like there is nothing happen, and said that Vulcan is different from human. That make Spock unique. But after TNG, Vulcan is no longer unique, nor has super ability. They just become another alien in the series.

For me Spock narrowly edges out Data and Odo. The Doctor and Saru are also cool. I'll never forgive Phlox for what he did in Dear Doctor.

The Doctor is probably my least favorite, not that I don't like him. But Phlox has critters, Odo can turn into things, Data is more human than even he realizes, and Spock is Spock, nuff said.

And also not Spock. Data is emotionless like Spock, but seeks the humanity that Spock eschews. And the Doctor and Phlox are both decidedly emotional beings.

Star Trek caught lightning in a bottle with Spock, and has been trying to replicate the achievement ever since. Spock will probably be remembered long after the other choices are forgotten. :vulcan:

Odo and Spock are among my favorite characters. I picked Odo because he was different and special with his shape shifting skills.

Very possible. And people at the time had no idea that Spock would become the iconic character that he did.

It's occured to me that each of the first five series, while they have a Spock-like figure (Spock, Data, Odo, Tuvok, and T'Pol), they also have an anti-Spock of sorts.
TOS had the crusty and emotionally driven McCoy.
TNG had the empathic and emotionally focused Troi.
DS9 had the sympathetic merchant of assorted vice, Quark (and to a lesser extent the hotheaded Major Kira).
VOY had its gaudy suited cruise director, Neelix.
And ENT had Phlox, enthusiastic and fascinated by human culture.
