Coming in 4K - Star Trek's 1-IV??

This probably deserves its own thread, but StarTrek.com has just confirmed that the TMP Director's Edition is being redone in 4k by the original DE team.

https://www.startrek.com/news/direc...k-the-motion-picture-set-to-be-fully-restored

Paramount and Paramount+ are excited to announce that a full restoration of the Director’s Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture has been greenlit.

The restoration will be undertaken by producer David C. Fein, restoration supervisor Mike Matessino, and visual effects supervisor Daren R. Dochterman, all of whom worked previously with director Robert Wise.

The film will be prepared for presentation in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision™ high dynamic range (HDR) and a new Dolby Atmos® soundtrack. The restoration is expected to take 6-8 months and will launch with an exclusive window on Paramount+.

Well, I was going to get the four-movie set to support the DE project, but if the future release is a fait accompli, I'll just wait for the double-dip.

Wonderful news! Great to have this finally officially confirmed.

Interesting that it is initially exclusive to Paramount+. I wonder what this means for the rest of the world?

Paramount plus’ Snyder Cut. :)
Not the most exciting movie but I’m sure seeing the Enterprise in 4K will be good

The 4 disc set announcement already seems out of date with the DE 4K release.

I suppose it could still be testing the waters for future physical-media Trek releases, but, yeah, it seems a little like jumping the gun unless they have some compelling reason to think that sales will suffer from not releasing ASAP.

I’ll be there day 1 to stream it and buy the DE 4K release. Been waiting too damn long to see this finally happen, and I’m glad to see it come to fruition.

I'll end up with both. Who am I kidding?

I mean, I probably will too because in my 30s/40s, I’ve gained an appreciation for TMP. I just want to wait to see if the likely DE set will have both. Hopefully that news will come before September. (Regardless, I don’t think I’ll be buying the 4-disc set announced here.)

Respect. I just can’t justify spending that much on buying these movies for the umpteenth time.

I remember holding off on buying the DVDs until they got proper two disc special editions. Those were nice sets.

I held off on the blu-rays because the quality seemed pretty awful for that format. I especially can’t wait to see TUC free of DNR.

All looks good but I’m confused why only 4 movies. Why not just do all 6? That’ll just confuse people

The rumor is that this is the minimum viable box set. You can't skip the first movie, and two and three end directly linking to the beginning of the following film, so this is the earliest they can start building the box sets. Then they'll do five, then six, and then each TNG film, and every time will release a new box set with more movies (and, hopefully, individual releases as each one is ready).

And here's the official news release for the box set:
