Coming in 4K - Star Trek's 1-IV??

Still not sure what I think about 4K. I think it looks too clean and clear for its own good. Almost to the point where it starts to look like a cartoon. Regular 1920x1080 HD feels like just the right type of Happy Medium. At least to me.

Yeah I'm happy with my blu rays on my old 1080i (not even p!) TV for the foreseeable until it dies.

Once I replace it and get the inevitable PS5 I'm sure I'll get some 4k media but I'm not desperate for it like I was in the back end of the VHS era.

That’s often the effect of people tinkering with the master print (if the source was originally film). Most film masters are a higher resolution than 4K (varies from 6-9K depending on the original film stock and the quality of the print masters struck from the original negative). But 4K is not the real source of improve (or cause of the cartoon issue). The most significant improvement of late is HDR (especially the dynamic kind) and 4K is not required (though only 4K displays offer it anymore). Properly done, it offers us the closest thing to the print master. Improperly used, which too often, and the “cartoon effect” is a frequent result (this applies with both film and digital video sources).

Injudicious use of DNVR is another cause of the waxy look - I seem to recall the existing Trek film Blu-rays have high noise reduction, which is one of the reasons I've still not bought them. I was holding out for 4K, but you never know if they'll be a heavily-processed mess.

Well in the last couple of years Paramount has remastered close to 30 of their movies at 4K resolution and the results have been highly praised as being faithful to the original film content. It's very unlikely that they will make the same mistake With The Star Trek movies that they made the first time

Yeah they've really stepped up their game in the last couple of years in the restoration Department since they changed management. They say they're very committed to restoring their catalog titles and so far they have been living up to that claim. So fingers crossed for this release being real and being good.

I’m not sure if I need all 4 in 4K. TWOK and TSFS aren’t exactly the most visually stunning and I’m not a huge fan of TVH. Its fine but a little overrated methinks.

But TMP? She would be beautiful in the UHD.

And that’s what I’ll be waiting for. I don’t need to spend $80 on these four movies. Again!

It's not been announced yet. There was the Amazon listing that was pulled, and this.

Definitely weird it's not a The First VI boxset. Or at least if they don't want it to be too expensive that they're not splitting it into two sets of 3.

Though I suppose, 10 "old" Trek films, so maybe sets of four, three and three? Making the TNG films the four boxset would make more sense on the surface, though I suppose this way has the connected trilogy all together.

Still very excited to see 3 films in this set that haven't had much remastering love in years get a polish though.

They’ll come eventually. I just hope they get good remasters this time round, and not just WoK.

Getting closer to that announcement now:

I don't have a 4K player - but this will make me get one!

"But they’re also close to announcing the rumored and much-anticipated 4K Ultra HD release of the classic Star Trek catalog films, beginning with a 4-film box set of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home on 9/8 (which is the anniversary of the TV debut of Star Trek on NBC back in 1966). These will likely include Dolby Vision HDR and new Dolby Atmos sound mixes. Our sources indicate that Star Trek: The Motion Picture will be the original theatrical version for this first release. The rationale behind the box set seems to be that you have to start with the first film, and then films 2-4 form a coherent story trilogy. Two additional 4K sets may follow (one with Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and Star Trek: Generations—which concludes the story of the original cast—and another with Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek: Nemesis—which concludes the TNG film saga). Last but not least, Paramount should finally deliver the long-awaited Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD upgrade of the Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition sometime in 2022. It’s likely that the studio will refresh their existing Blu-ray editions of these films with the new transfers at some point as well. We expect more on all of this to be revealed at Creation Entertainment’s The “55-Year Mission Tour” Star Trek Convention next month in Las Vegas (August 11-15 at the Rio)."
