Spoilers Star Trek: Prodigy General Discussion Thread

I know he is a consultant on the series but David Mack saying Prodigy is the best Star Trek series since DS9 is high praise.

I doubt if I would feel that way but I fully expect to like it more than Lower Decks, especially if characters on the show don’t talk loud and fast.

Damn, now you really have my attention. I love all of the new Star Treks (took me awhile with Discovery, but I'm there now) so this is very high praise. Especially since Deep Space Nine is my absolute favorite Trek!

Well they've always said that the new villain is the best villain since Khan!!! ...which never was true. XD
Well, that's also a matter of opinion.

Such as this one: I think Khan is overrated (both the film and as a villain).

But before anyone jumps down my throat and derails this thread, I only brought up that opinion to make a point. Mack had an opinion about the level of excellence of Prodigy and that was one that stood out to me. Maybe you don't believe it because of what has been said in relation to Khan but I argue that it doesn't matter because those are opinions, too.

Okay, maybe I have already derailed this thread.

I actually concur. Not that Ricardo Montelban didn't do a superlative job in the role, but the main issue with Khan is...he's supposed to be an augmented human with genius-level intelligence, and yet he doesn't come across as a master strategist at all. He just seems like a normal guy who is very arrogant.

I'm generally not into kids' shows or even animated shows, but this is looking better and better to me.

And yes, "best since DS9" is high praise...

Thanks for sharing.

They appear to stick to identifying Jankom as Tellarite.
Perhaps this is like how in the expanded universe there are Arkenites who identify culturally as Andorian, or how Burnham is Vulcan by culture/nationality.
Or it's just the art style.

"Best since DS9" is an interesting comment. I mean, it loosely denigrates Voyager, Enterprise and all of NuTrek (Abrams and Kurtzman thus far), but brings to attention the fan favorite DS9 which hasn't been often acknowledged in the Kurtzman era at all, unlike TOS, TNG, and Voyager. Prodigy has been pushing for Voyager fan engagement, through their promotion of Captain Janeway's legacy at fan events and such, and the show will undoubtedly bring forward several Voyager references with shared characters and settings.

So, is there a strategic, tactical reasoning for bringing up DS9 and promoting it to die-hard Niners who might want to watch the show? DS9 is having its own little renaissance right now with the Documentary and multiple online podcasts, that will likely translate into Kurtzman era references (my money was on more refs in Lower Decks first).

I'm overthinking this, and it's probably just @David Mack's unfettered personal opinion, not run through any of P+'s media machine, but allowed to be stated on its own merit. It would be interesting, though, if the comment was allowed to be published because it links to a change in strategy by the writing team, and we can expect more unexpected DS9 callbacks in the future.

All it is is a hype job to connect with a fan favorite now. The current fan darling and getting people to pay attention to the upcoming show. I doubt the comment is an indication one way or the other on more DS9 content.

I agree as well, and don't think WoK is the best Trek movie, but that's not the point here

No, it doesn't. It's not like the only two possibilities are "best" and "bad." Something can be less than the best while still being excellent.

You're definitely overthinking it. Dave is a creative consultant to the writing staff, not a member of the CBS marketing department. He also co-wrote DS9: "Starship Down" and the story for "It's Only a Paper Moon," as well as writing various DS9-related works of prose fiction (including the DS9 novel Warpath and several novels about Bashir's post-series Section 31 career), so it's a series he has a history with and a fondness for.

Have you watched Discovery Season 3? It was full of DS9 stuff. Cardassians, Bajorans, Lurians.

And Lower Decks actually features Deep Space 9 in one scene. And Quark's Bar is a thriving franchise in Star Trek: Picard. Lots of DS9 references if you know where to look.

I love The Wrath of Khan, it's one of my favorite Trek movies.

My main complaint about the Khan Character though, is that the writers/director/editor didn't play up enough the fact that for all his intelligence, he was still an emotional human being who was mad with grief over the loss of his wife (Marla McGivers) and why he blamed Kirk.
(they kinda gloss over that fact)

A lot more exposition about that, would have driven home his motivation for being so intent on killing Kirk AND why he was acting irrationally most of the time.

That's an interesting observation.
