You say it's a problem that those characters will stay white, but think of all the new characters that wouldn't exist if the original heroes had been race swapped. No Miles Morales, Jon Stewart, Kamala Khan, or Isaiah Bradley to name a few.

Excellent point, actually.

Huh? That comparison doesn't make sense, since race swapping is something that happens in screen adaptations of the comics, so it has no bearing on what characters are created in the original comics themselves. Adaptations don't replace the originals, certainly not retroactively.

Even within a single medium, it's a false dichotomy to pit the two approaches against each other. Both are valuable in increasing inclusion. Sam Jackson as Nick Fury didn't prevent Black Panther or Luke Cage or The Falcon and the Winter Soldier from being made. Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen didn't prevent Black Lightning from being made or the Ryan Wilder Batwoman from being created. They're not competing approaches, they're complementary. If anything, more diverse casting in the high-profile roles can pave the way for getting movies made about characters who started out diverse.

Possible quantummania spoiler from Evangeline Lilly

In a taken down post, she tagged Corey Stoll alongside her cast mates and Peyton Reed. So unless she inexplicably decided to share with a former co-star randomly, it looks like Darren Cross/Yellowjacket from the first Ant-Man will be coming back

He probably didn’t die but was sucked into the quantum realm

I don't think Feige regrets anything and he is pretending the Tibet thing wasn't a issue. He is just trying like hard to make sure Shang Chi isn't banned in China. It's hard to say the move didn't work. You avoided the stereotype and got a good character and a great actor who brings gravitas to the role. The idea she is stealing a role is absurd. Who says you can only hire Asians for the so called Asian roles. If you want to hire more Asian actors just do it and keep creating more Jimmy Woo style characters. That character is very popular at least to me.

Because it's considered inappropriate to give roles meant for a person of one race to a person of another race.

When it's a role for a person of color going to a white actor, you mean -- not the other way around. It's not symmetrical, because the goal is to correct the massive institutional bias that has unfairly favored white actors. People keep forgetting that this isn't about characters, who don't exist, but about actors, who are real flesh-and-blood human beings who need to earn a living wage. It's a job fairness issue, making sure that people of color are not shut out of jobs they're qualified for.

By the same token, the American film industry is relatively more inclusive of black actors than Asian actors, so giving an Asian role to a black actor, say, wouldn't do any more to counter discrimination against Asians than giving it to a white actor.

From Feige's comments, it was more about trying to avoid the racial stereotype of the wise Asian mystic imparting his secrets to a white-savior figure -- although they just replaced that racially problematical trope with the equally problematical trope of whitewashing.

It seems to me the best solution there would've been to make Stephen Strange Asian-American -- cast someone like Daniel Dae Kim or John Cho in the role. Then he wouldn't have been a white savior appropriating Asian culture, but an Asian-American rediscovering his own heritage (like Nicky Shen in the new CW Kung Fu series). Although I guess portraying an Asian hero as mystically empowered is as much a stereotype in its way as portraying one as a martial artist. And there's nothing really all that Asian about Doctor Strange's style of magic, although I guess the mandala-like circles of light in the movie would qualify.
These are all good points which I do agree with. I don’t believe Feige’s explanation at all. It makes him look less bigoted but infinitely dumber, and I don’t believe he is that dumb.

Not calling him a racist, but I think the decision to hire Swindon had nothing to do with trying to fight a stereotype and more to do with casting an actor who he wanted in the role. He’s trying to cleanup now.

All the characters I listed are "derived" characters (for lack of a better term) of mainline white characters. Isaiah Bradley inserted into Caps backstory, The second Ms. Marvel, a new Green Lantern, etc. Theres no connection between Jimmy Olsen and Black Lightning.

And yes, continuity usually prevents race swapping, but you mentioned Nick Fury, who was famously race swapped for the Ultimates comic line. And I'm sure you remember, years later Marvel jumped through some major hoops to introduce basically the same character to the 616 universe as Nick Fury Jr.

DC also race swapped Wally West in the New 52 and later backtracked during the Rebirth event a few years later. Now there are two Wally Wests.

But to my original point, once you race swap in an adaptation, with character slots being at a premium in movies, are you really going to see John Stewart in a Green Lantern movie if Hal Jordan is black?

Does it matter? As I keep stressing, what's important here are not imaginary characters, but real-life actors who get paid for their work. As long as more actors of color get gainful employment, it doesn't matter what characters they play. And it's pointless to make excuses for closing off one potential avenue over another. If a house is on fire, it's a waste of energy to fight over whether you should use a hose or buckets to throw water on it. USE EVERY METHOD POSSIBLE.

Looks like it's going to be well worth the very long wait.

One thing I didn't think about until I saw this trailer is the importance of the vast diversity of this cast. The image of these eternal beings representing so many parts of the world arriving on Earth during the early days of civilization is a powerful one.

Beautiful looking trailer. Will be interesting to watch.
Does anyone know who the main villain will be?

the cinematography in just that short trailer looks beautiful. Of course you'd expect that from a Chloe Zhao film.
I thought the same thing. I finally saw Nomadland a few weeks back and I was completely blown away how beautiful the film looked. That got me very excited about what she would bring to Eternals and so far it looks like it's on the same scale.

Love the continuance of the Doctor Strange type of 'magic circles/symbols'. It does look a little bit different, but the similarities are there.
I liked that touch, too. Golden and more tangible, but the same style.

Plus, the reference about Captain Rogers and Iron Man being gone firmly puts this film (the contemporary part of it) post-Endgame. I don't know if that was just speculation until now or if we actually already knew that. Either way, I'm curious to see if we'll see small references to the first three phases and the Eternals' perspective of those events. Not that there needs to be and I hope it's not weighed down by such references, but it would be cool to see a nod or two here and there.

Beautifully looking trailer. Will be interesting to watch.

We don't know anything on that front aside from the Deviants as a whole. I'm sure there'll be someone specific along with them. Although we do know who will be at least a partial antagonist among the Eternals.
