I can kind of see Catwoman as an early proto costume but that Riddler...

 

The Riddler I'm not sold on, though Adam West's version was always going to be tough to follow up with. That's clearly concept art though so I'll wait to see the film. Regardless, this is the one version of Batman I've been excited to see after the disappointing "Batman and Robin" kind of sucked the life out of the character for me.

 

There was never any chance of a modern, post-Nolan feature-film take on the Riddler being anywhere near the same stylistic universe as that or the Jim Carrey version.

Anyway, a fully masked Riddler makes sense from a certain angle -- his very identity is an "enigma" to be solved, one more layer of concealment. This movie is supposed to be focusing more on Batman as a detective than previous films, so perhaps identifying the Riddler is the mystery he has to solve (and perhaps he will turn out to be a character whose face we see elsewhere in the movie).

 

That's just plain crazy talk! Condemn the costume now without seeing it in action! That's the only way!

No, of course not. I do like the idea of a fully masked Riddler, and the idea of even multiple masks as part of the enigma. as part of his persona. The concept art presented though strikes me as very unfinished. Not sure why.

Even for concept art it feels very limited. I can't put my finger on it.

 

For years people wanted Nolan to do The Riddler. They thought he’d do a zodiac killer version

Now we get that version with “The Batman”

 

It would be nice to have that detective element of Batman presented on screen.

 

I imagined a Nolanesque Riddler more along the lines of a calculating, intellectual criminal mastermind manipulating events like a citywide chess game. Perhaps contending with a rival crime boss named Cobblepot who put on airs of belonging to high society.

 

^ That'd be amazing! I guess given Batman's detective skills, I always thought The Riddler had the potential to be Batman's Moriarty. Though The Joker also covers some of that ground.

 

Agreed. If anything, they need to play up the ZODIAC look even more. The best episode of the 90’s Lance Hendriksen vehicle MILLENNIUM borrowed a certain title—“The Mikado.”

The Zodiac type costume played a vital role in the last scene. That Batman doesn’t have a gun would play well if they copy this scene

The Batmobile is a muscle car in The Garage. I think they are going grindhouse with this one. Everything should have been shot with 16 mm for that though

 

Another thing to keep in mind is that this is meant to take place early in Batman's career, which means the other characters like The Riddler and Catwoman are just starting out, so there's always a chance their looks could evolve into something closer to the comics by the end of the movie.
We actually did see The Riddler and Catwoman in the Fan Dome trailer, and they looked pretty much exactly like this artwork.
I like giving the Riddler a mask like this, it definitely makes him a lot creepier.
I'm not quite sure what to make of Catwoman's mask though. Having her eyes and mouth exposed, but then having the strip of cloth across her nose just looks strange to me.

It looks like kind of a makeshift thing made from a knit wool ski mask, or something.
