Spoilers The Handmaid's Tale (TV series)

My heart continues to break for Janine. That argument between her and June was brutal on both sides but Janine is right: June has lied to her. I would've forgotten about Caleb if it hadn't been for the previously on, which I actually skipped. It wasn't until her second flashback that I realized I needed to go back and rewatch those clips. June hid the painful truth from Janine and my heart will break for her all over again if and when ever see finds out.

I was wrong last week to think Janine and the others had looked past the possibility of June telling the Eyes where they were hiding. Janine rightfully confronted June about it and then blamed the deaths of Alma, Brianna and the others on June. I know she was hurting in that moment, grieving for their deaths and tired of being dragged around by June, but I also think she wasn't far from the truth. I actually thought June would own up to some responsibility, but I was wrong again. They may have moved past the conflict later on, but I won't be surprised if it comes up again.

I didn't expect to see any more flashbacks this late into the show but I'm glad we finally got to delve into Janine's past a little. I was thoroughly disgusted by the not-abortion clinic Janine first went to, not just because of the grotesque and blatant lies and fearmongering, but also because they're becoming more and more real in America. We have horrible Republicans who are pushing these Draconian laws on a state level to push for such restrictions on clinics and forcing doctors to spew bullshit, if not quite as extreme (at least not yet) as the ones the doctor was legally required to say in the second flashback. And that continues one of the core strengths of The Handmaid's Tale, following Atwood's lead: All of this reflects reality because it already has happened.

Nice to see some focus on Rita recuperating in Canada, even if she was forced to face the Waterfords individually. I was genuinely worried for a moment that she was going to get pulled right back in and feel some kind obligation to help Serena, especially after learning about Serena's pregnancy. But, thankfully, I didn't have to worry because she turned the tables and passed on the photo to Fred against Serena's own wishes. Neither of them still don't understand: It doesn't matter if they treated Rita nicely. She was still enslaved. Their property. So, once again, fuck the Waterfords. Let them destroy each other and praise Rita for throwing more fuel onto that shit fire.

INSURGENT: Sex slaves in the United States of America. Who would have thought it? Man, that's sick!
JUNE: We weren't in the USA
INSURGENT: Well, you are now. So, which one of you will be my sex slave?
JUNE: What?
INSURGENT: Our food isn't free. Someone's got to pay. But I'm not forcing you...
Yeah, that was all kinds of fucked up and stupid and insane. I was screaming at my screen during that whole thing.

How many episodes tonight? We're getting #3 and #4 in Canada. I'd just like to know how far behind I'm going to be.

I swear to gods, if Janine was killed in that bomb raid after everything she's gone through, after the fights with June and then making up with her in order to go with her to find the Nighthawks, I will be very, very pissed.

Even with the long-awaited reunion between June and Moira, I will still be very pissed.

A reunion that I don't think will go the way Moira will want it to go. I have a strong feeling, after the emotions of seeing each other again, June will double down in her fight against Gilead and refuse to return to Canada with Moira. And it will break Moira's heart. And Luke's.

Unsurprisingly, Lydia schemes her way back into power via Lawrence and, in turn, he uses her intel to scheme his way back into power. Their scheming threw Nick off when he thought he was being the clever one in seeking out June (although why he's searching for her when he just let her go makes no sense...) and found himself in charge bombing Chicago where he knows she's at. All of that Machiavellian scheming is a little silly but I quite enjoyed it. Certainly a lot better than seeing the Woos of Serena and Fred.

Halfway through the season and we've barely seen anything from Emily. I really hope we see more of her because I'm far more interested in seeing her story than Serena and Fred, and Nick, and even Lawrence.

An aside: I loved how the word "testaments" showed up during Lydia's attempt to blackmail Lawrence. It's probably nothing more than a wink at the novel, but it was a nice one nonetheless. That said, the Aunt (I missed her name, I think Rose) who took joy in telling Lydia (in presumably Ardua Hall) that it was her time to rest reminded me of Aunt Vidala, although I'm sure that wasn't actually intended.

I can't imagine anything more frustrating.

So ... Probably!

Okay, this is just ridiculous. Moira being there is just so contrived...

Moira is a refugee. Unless Canada has vastly changed the rules and laws regarding refugee status, I guess Moira has given up her right to that status, because refugees do not get to scamper back to the place where they came from - the place so dangerous that they would be at risk of death to return to - and then re-enter Canada.

Moira is clearly an aid worker and I'm sure Canada is fine with American citizens wanting to go back to help out. So it's not like she's "scampering" back on her own.

In spite of the show being filmed in Canada, it plays fast and loose with how things are here. It's ridiculous and really annoying.

Well...it's not the same Canada as real life Canada. It's a fictionalized version that's reacting to a very different world from our own.

They could at least not pretend that the capital of Canada is Toronto. It really isn't.

Some of the comments I've seen on the review channels are insane. People were getting hysterical because Emily took Holly/Nicole to Canada: "Do they even HAVE baby formula in Canada? That baby's gonna STARVE!!!!!!!"

Yeah, we have baby formula. We even have electricity and indoor bathrooms.

While that's a fair criticism, have they outright said Toronto is the capital of Canada in the show (I admit I haven't paid attention on that count) or are all of the international dealings we've seen occur there because it's a central hub (similar to the UN in New York)? The former is a genuine error that should be criticized, the latter is just creative licensing (perhaps dictated because it's possibly cheaper to film there).

Of course that's where they film it, as Toronto is one of the cities in Canada where a lot of American shows are filmed. Vancouver and Calgary are others.

However... the episodes in which Fred and Serena came to Canada on their diplomatic mission should have either been stated to happen in Toronto due to "Little America" being in Toronto, or it should have stated that the diplomatic mission happened in Ottawa (because that's how it's done) and Moira, Luke, and the other protesters traveled to Ottawa to confront the Waterfords.

I have trouble suspending my disbelief when stuff like this happens.

Well, if they didn't outright state Toronto is the capital, then I don't see it being a problem. Any inconsistency with our reality can be chalked up with how Canada operates in a world dealing with Gilead (and the global crisis that lead to Gilead's creation).

I just explained why it's a problem.

Moira showing up and seeing June is a case of small world syndrome. What are odds a relief crew from Toronto goes to Chicago and Moira just so happens to meet June. The entire city is part of a war zone. It's not a small place nor the only battlefront.

Yeah, maybe so, but dramatic license. I don't mind because it'll sooner deal with the fact that June isn't going to leave Gilead behind.

Besides, it gives Moira something to do who has barely had anything more to do than Emily this season.

Soap opera syndrome. This is the sort of thing that would happen on General Hospital.

I don't recall - did Moira say she was part of a group of aid workers that planned to waltz over the border?

On top of TV series production logistics, Toronto is still a major hub of international commerce, with many nations we deal with having consular operations there for obvious reasons. There should be more location work in Ottawa, yes, and yet I understand wanting to keep the costs down.

On a related note: we're building a soundstage complex here in Ottawa:

Yes. That's why she couldn't stay with Luke and Nichole last episode and why she didn't have any more tone than a quick dinner on the front stoop with her girlfriend. They set up she was going to work with an NGO

Where is the UN located in this world? It's no longer in NYC, obviously. Perhaps it's in Toronto?
