The battles in the Sol System, starting around episode 17 are epic in some ways. Episode 21 is probably the best if you are into space combat.

If it is raw emotional story material, that picks up around there as well.

Yamato 2202 has a problem of putting in material that doesn't make sense...at the time, that will come up again near the end to make the things that happen make more sense, or not seem like they just pulled a solution out the author's butt. Things are in place, or at least seen before hand. Just they aren't clear what they are or are for until later.

I pretty much agree with you, But the whole white comet / comet empire storyline wasn't very tight even In the original version compared to the first season story.

That said, overall I still enjoyed it and I thought they did a couple of interesting things with certain enemy characters that actually explain their motivations better than the original did (IMO). So yeah it's an issue with the fact that they are really trying to stick with many elements of the original story that honestly never made a lot of sense in the first place.

Probably what happens when you take a story that was originally a movie and stretch it out for a TV series.

That is likely true as well, since Yamato 2202 was stated to be a remake/reboot of the film version of events rather that the Comet Empire arc of the TV series. So the writer and director were specifically going for the emotional points from Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato, rather than the points from Yamato 2 (which are slightly to widely different in execution).

However, since the film is again being made into a 26 episode series, it has to do its own thing in places. And...since the series is intended to continue onwards...it can't have a final ending like Farewell was to be originally. Thus you have to craft the emotional point of that final ending with the ability to continue the story....and that is where Yamato 2202 becomes its own thing...not being the ending of either Farewell nor Yamato 2, but a new one.

In addition to this, we are getting a film version of the events of Yamato 2202 in a little over a month....which may change it up yet again in a setup for Yamato 2205 at some later date.

I really hope they address the female uniforms at some point, some of them are downright embarrassing. I don't need to see the crease of Yuki Mori's vagina to get that she is a female.

They never will. Do you think it's just a coincidence that there are so few female crew members in the fleet (even when they repeatedly said they were in a serious manpower shortage)? Because they are too much embarrassed to wear something like that. And even with the only female captain we met, it seems that her uniform is made of latex/rubber.

Joking aside, the ones who work on command center and similar in Earth wear absolutely normal and sensible uniforms, but the moment they set foot in a ship, it's Skintight Fetish Time.

But the one which is downright embarrassing is the nurse's uniform. What the heck!?!

Yep. And she is the only one with that uniform.
The only explanation is that the doctor is just an old dirty man. By the way, in an episode she decided to dress up as a French maid during a party. Because this is what they taught in the Space Nurse School.

For better or worse 'fanservice' in Japanese Anime isn't going away. The Japanese creators often cater to it as part of the fantasy they're building.

It actually ends up throwing me out of the story.

I think for me what the biggest difference between the original series and 2202 is that, for all intents and purposes, the good guys "lost". The Andromeda, the entire EDF, and their crews, were lost to the Comet Empire fleet and Gatlantis, the moon was turned into a "flaming ball of fire", Earth surrendered for a time, then was blasted by Zordar's dreadnought, probably causing untold environmental damage and millions of deaths, and the Yamato is left a wreck with only 18 survivors. If not for Teresa's arrival at the end, the Yamato would have been lost as well.

And, although it's never really touched upon in subsequent movies/series, Earth never really fully recovers from the losses sustained at the Battle of Saturn in terms of ships and manpower. In 'The New Voyage' it's just the Yamato. In 'Be Forever Yamato' it's a handful of automated battleships that are quickly ambushed and wiped out. In 'The Bolar Wars' we see a light EDF cruiser and the battleships 'Prince of Wales', 'Arizona', 'Bismark' and 'Novik', all of which are lost during the course of the series, and in 'Final Yamato', the evac fleet and escorts are destroyed, leaving only nine serviceable ships to escort the Yamato in battle against the Dengil..

With 2202, I don't get that same sense of loss/defeat. Sure, hundreds, if not thousands of ships are lost; but, most, if not all, of the EDF fleet is fully automated by the time we get past the Battle of Saturn; and; thanks to the 'Time Vault', most of those losses are made up for, even after Zordar and Gatlantis are defeated.

Also, except for a portion of the moon being blown off, Earth was untouched by Zordar.

As for those who died in the final assault on Gatlantis, I was 'Meh'. Maybe it's because I watched the original series when it first aired, and subsequently found out about who died thanks to the Perfect Albums is bought a few years later; so, when they died in 2202 it didn't have the same impact. Even the Yamato, with her wave-motion shields, visually appeared to escape relatively unscathed.

The only good thing about the final episodes was the arrival of the Gamilus fleet to help the Yamato in its final assault on Gatlantis; something that the original series should have done.

Makoto is the only one of the nursing staff that uses thigh high leggings. The rest have pants and tunic. Both for the male and female nurses, aside from Makoto. The male nurses have a light blue uniform, while the females have the pink like Makoto has. She customized her own uniform for her own reasons. It is likely still regulation. As for the maid dress, she was talked into that by being told the 'Farewell to Earth' party was a costume party, by Oota (who you can see smiling as he tries to slip away before she realizes what he did). She was embarrassed to find it wasn't, until she realized that Kato has also been talked into wearing a costume. So instead she decided to get Oota back by drinking him under the table. Other crew members decided to have fun and dress up as well, since it would be the last time they knew they could have fun before leaving the Solar System...perhaps forever.

The carriers are back! I was expecting/hoping to see them with their Borodino/Dreadnaught sister ships in 2202, but better late than never. More fodder for the Black Nebula!

I'm sure the in-universe there are a lot of perfectly reasonable explanations for the skimpy outfits, but the fact remains that all the female characters seem ready to go to a party at the Torture Garden...

Seems like a repurposed Dreadnought into a supply ship of some kind. It makes some sense since Earth had a lot of extra Dreadnoughts post-war. They were building lots of ship and didn't have the crews for them. Converting some of them into other purposes.

Bandai has just released images of its upcoming 2205 line of models. The Lexington class carrier and Deslar's new flagship look really good.

I wonder if they’re actually going to be called Lexington class, which I thought was more of a Voyager Entertainment addition to their old ship combat system 20-some years ago. Would be nice, and in keeping with the more global United Nations nature of the Earth Defense Force. ;)

Probably not, though, since I don’t think they adopted any of the other more Western-sounding names that VE attached to all the EDF ships.

The Earth carrier is referred to as this by the information for the kit: Dreadnought Kai-class Supply Carrier Asuka(ドレッドノート改級補給母艦 アスカ)
