Although Beverly is only 45 at the time of the commando mission. McCoy is 60 when Kirk has him come along on the hostage rescue raid on Nimbus III.
Kirk, Spock and McCoy around the camp fire is one of the best moments from TOS movies, IMO.
And the end is still fun, with Kirk very promptly realising things were not adding up with God and his need of a starship.
As Amaris mentioned above, Kelley knocked it out of the ballpark in the scene with his Father.
Also, if it weren't for TFF, we never would've got this catchy vid:
But the flagship Federation getting taken over by Ferengi with two outdated Klingon Birds of Prey? This episode is unforgiveable in how INCOMPETANT it made the crew look.
always thought it was ridiculous when beaming down to a planet the landing party would be nearly every senior officer.....no landing party trained in this procedure etc
I loved when Odo threw this in Worfs face when he first moved over to DS9 and started questioning the work Odo was doing.
why is the head engineer of a starship beaming down ?
Scotty routinely beamed down as part of the landing party even when his value to the mission was dubious at best. There was no real reason for him to beam down to the surface of Melkot unless one surmises that he might have been useful had Melkotian technology or vessels been encountered.
This is one of the reasons I say that it is too late for a Trek/Wars crossover. I wanted Luke to be a surrogate David, and Kirk a surrogate father to Skywalker—-only to be struck down by Vader. Those could have been powerful scenes. The McCoy's father euthanasia scene is one of the best character development moments in the franchise.
The Borg, as first presented, were not a villain, they were an opponent. No different than a natural disaster. A stone does not have a face. You cannot ponder the motivations of an earthquake.
The Borg Queen was an attempt to put a face on the Borg, a opponent whose very facelessness was part of the nature.
It's hilarious to me to watch this discussion unfold after reading so many discussions around how Discovery and Lower Decks have completely botched the Star Trek formula of making the main character not the captain. It's like here is the perfect answer to the whole "senior staff beams on the dangerous missions" and now that's going against the Star Trek ethos. I don't understand Star Trek fans any more. "We want Star Trek to be like Star Trek except 25% more awesome and without all that stupid stuff! Argh, you took away the stupid stuff! How dare you!"Sometimes it's just a TV show. Characters played by people pulling the bigger checks will wind up on the away teams.
The mission in "Chain Of Command" makes no sense whatsoever.
The reason for picking the people they picked is so we could have an episode. Let's not overthink it.
TNG still isn't as bad as TOS in this regard where the top two officers on the ship went on nearly every away mission. If you time it Scotty probably spends more time technically in command of the Enterprise than Kirk does over the course of the show.
But it's TV. People want to see Kirk/Spock/Bones together so they're the ones on the away missions.

It's almost like it is a TV show about characters played by actors that get paid money...I know, I was just as shocked as you were. It's an old beef, and the right explanation.
