Hasbro's Power Rangers era and General Tokusatsu discussion

The Swordsmen acted pretty helpless to deal with Durandal's teleportation ability, but we were shown pretty clearly that he has to separate and reconnect his weapon in order to trigger it, so they should've caught onto that and attacked him at that moment, to keep him from completing the gesture. Kamen Rider has generally been pretty good at avoiding the implausibility of an adversary just standing there waiting while a fighter completed a transformation or weapon activation or whatever. The Showa Riders tended to jump up somewhere high so they'd have a free moment to do their henshin poses, and the majority of the Heisei Riders, at least since Blade, have had energy fields or constructs around them that repelled attacks (or sometimes even inflicted attacks by themselves) until the henshin was complete. But I don't think Saber has that -- they just have the Swordsmen stand there holding up the books while they recite their long speeches, and so on.
You're right, this is the first time a Rider hasn't had a protective field while performing their henshin in a very long time.

Which isn't as big a deal as it sounds, since nearly all the previous Gold Rangers have been either Polynesian (John Tui, Jordi Webber), Asian or half-Asian (Mike Ginn, Steven Skyler), or Latino (Davi Santos, Abraham Rodriguez). The only exceptions were Trey and Jason in Zeo (unless you count Nic Sampson as the voice of Sentinel Knight).

His character's name is Aiyon.

Which sounds like he's from Zayto's species.

Interesting that Tessa Rao (Izzy) is the only one with a New Zealand accent out of character.

A pretty decent episode with a nice unmorphed fight

I appreciate seeing the Javi and Izzy interactions. Probably the most natural feeling sibling rangers we've had in a while.

This is the least impressive episode for me so far. Okay, there's some decent family drama with the Garcias, but it took too long to get to it. The music sequences did nothing for me, and I'm getting tired of Jane and J-Borg's antics. Also, why did they put the whole video online complete with the part that was embarrassing to Javi? And wouldn't they need the consent of the video's subjects before they could post it?

Having the music be the trigger for the Stego Spike Zord was a bit random. I think they were going for the idea that it was the good feelings and confidence that Javi's music inspired in him that energized his connection to the Zord, that it was his darker mood imposed by his father that suppressed the link, but they should've made that aspect clearer.

As usual, the only Ryusoulger footage was a bit of the first morphed fight and the giant battle (from episode 5 thereof). There were some shots in the former where you could tell the Green Ranger had a male physique. Izzy's the first gender-flipped Power Ranger since Taylor in Wild Force 18 years ago. As with some of her predecessors, I'm a bit surprised they cast someone so curvy, so that the difference in body shape is pretty obvious. But then, it's not just the gender-flipped Rangers. In Ninja Steel, Chrysti Ane was not only more curvaceous but more muscular than her Pink Ranger stunt double (in both stock and new footage). I always found it amusing that she looked less powerful in her superhero form.

Saber 30: It was nice to see the team welcoming Rintarou back and forgiving him far more readily than he felt he deserved. Still, it was a brief moment of fun and warmth before we were plunged back into the ultra-angsty stuff, with Mei getting turned into a Megiddo whose superpower seemed to be playing on Rintarou's insecurities, which are legion. Meanwhile, Touma still hasn't quite mastered the ability to free humans trapped inside Megiddo, and the rest of the team can't help since they've all been sent off on their own missions or gone off on their own initiative.

Still, it's nice that Sophia is actually back, not just for a brief cameo but playing a substantial role.

Zenkaiger 6: It seems like some time has passed since the last episode, as the gang has settled into a routine and Magine's messiness is treated as a familiar character trait by the others. Cute story contrasting her messiness with Vroom's cleanliness, though not quite in an Odd Couple way since they're just two members of a larger group. It was amusing that Magine's messiness was actually beneficial because she's an old hand at finding what she needs in the middle of a mess.

A whole world defined by garbage is as strange as one defined by boxing or sushi. But there's precedent in Go-onger's Junk World, at least. Anyway, I'm still finding the links to past Sentai to be extremely cursory. Even the use of Go-Busters powers seemed a random selection here. It would've made more sense to go with Denziman, since their enemies, the Vader Clan, were all about spreading "sludge" (hedoro) and pollution and the like.

Although judging from the preview for next week, it looks like the new villain Stacey will be doing the sort of thing I suggested a week or two ago, using Sentai powers from other worlds to attack the Zenkaigers. That will help a bit, but I'm still wondering if the show will ever get around to actual guest appearances by past Sentai heroes, like in Gokaiger.

"Classic Demorph. I love it"

So Mick isn't staying on the series. He's off to pursue the nexus prism. He's also taken photos with over 40 Power Ranger teams. He's like the Gai (GokaiSilver) of the franchise.

I didn't expect Boomtower to be defeated so quickly but I guess I'm used to Sentai's series length of 45 to 50 episodes. The downside of a short season is that certain characters don't get alot of focus.

Also Void Knight has his own version of Nora Fries hidden away.

An interesting episode, tying into the history of the franchise. I'd heard that Dino Fury was going to explore the origins of the Morphin Grid and the Ranger powers, and we're finally starting to see that. Mick giving the team access to his Ranger database will probably tie into that going forward. I wonder if we'll eventually learn how the Morphin Masters connect to Zordon.

Although the only artifacts we saw the MMs create here were the Dino Gems from Dino Thunder, the Energems from Dino Charge, and the Nexus Prism from Ninja Steel.

I don't remember whether the footage of the Megazord falling apart ever happened in Ryusoulger. As far as I can tell, neither of the Minusaurs we saw footage of here had a destructive sonic attack. So I wonder if that was newly created.

Since the Prism found what it was looking for underwater, I think it's safe to say that its search was setting up the arrival of the sixth Dino Fury Ranger and his mosasaur Zord (based on Canalo and Mosa Rex). Meanwhile, it's intriguing to learn that Void Knight is trying to save a loved one. Maybe he'll be a redeemable villain. Ooh -- maybe he'll actually become the sixth Ranger! Basically merging Gaisorg and Canalo in the original. Though that might be a stretch. Still, it's interesting. We don't often see sympathetic or redeemable villains in Power Rangers.

Remember, Tankjoh was originally destroyed in episode 6 of Ryusoulger, two episodes earlier than this, and was replaced by Wiseru as the main Druidon. Although he was brought back later.

Well that escalated quickly.

His helmet is meant to resemble battle fever. He has the power to summon avatars of past teams AND past team core mecha.

He owned the Zenkaiger this week. Can't wait to watch the episode subbed

BUT WAIT! Next week brings us the 6th ranger! TwoKaiser. He resembles a Gokaiger

He can use Ohranger and Shinkenger powers for armor modes

Wow, ep 8 for 6th ranger?

That is VERY early and different.

Maybe they're safeguarding against potential COVID shutdowns by getting stuff out of the way early.

It turns out that Twokaizer has one of the most absurd civilian names I've ever heard: Zox Goldtweaker.

I guess he has an Ohranger form because that was the 20th-anniversary series; it was #19, but it was 20 years after Gorenger premiered (that show ran for nearly two years straight), and it was designed to emulate Gorenger, with similar characters and with Aorenger's actor playing the mentor. The Shinkenger form is harder to explain, as that wasn't an anniversary season. ShinkenGold wasn't the first Gold Ranger, though a case could be made that he was the first "normal" one; of his three predecessors, DekaGold was a one-shot movie character, MagiShine didn't have "Gold" in his name and had a distinct costume design from the other Magirangers, and Go-On Gold shared his "Sixth" status with his sister Go-On Silver.

For Power Rangers it was just Tuesday...

Yeah the Shinkenger form is harder to pin down. Shinkenger form is based on Kyoryu Origami/Hyper ShinkenRed. I can't find any anniversary linking with that though.

And yes. That voice is once again Tomokazu Seki AKA the voice of Gokaiger's Mobirates/changer.

The Bandai officials also commented on how TwoKaiser looks like Gokai Red. You might as well say he is the Gokaigers' seventh member or Gokai Red's upgrade form.
