Oh, you're not wrong--I mentioned this in the offseason thread, but I have zero faith in MLB's "compliance officers" to be able to put a finger on any foreign substances being used; much like PEDs, the labs that produce this stuff are always three steps ahead of the people trying to catch them.

I just think it's delicious that of all people, Bauer--who, in addition to being a fuckin' jackass in general, openly admitted to meeting with chemists about developing custom sticky substances for him to use--is the first pitcher to get a ball yanked for inspection this season.
 
So this was something I've never seen before... last night's NL East standings after the Phillies had lost a game for the first time this season, and the Nationals had finally played a game, so their record was 1-0.

He didn't oversell a HBP. He ran in to it wanting to get hit, especially with the armor. That was a strike the Marlins were cheated out of the game. I hope Conforto takes one in the ribs his next at bat.
 
Both Schwarber & Contreras of the Cubs got run back to home plate last year for "not getting out of the way", so it's clearly another judgement call. Which is funny because MLB umpires have zero judgement.

I'm not sure the ball even touched his elbow guard, and he did lean into it. Effin' stupid that HBP can be reviewed, but not whether he tried to get hit.

MLB should overrule that nonsense and make them replay the inning.
 
Looking at the replay, yeah, Conforto absolutely leaned into that pitch, and even Ron Kulpa admitted the call was blown. (I'm going to just take Mr. Laser Beam's impending joke out of the way and say he expressed a "mea kulpa.")

But anyway, that's black-letter law under Rule 6.08(b):

The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first base without liability to be put out (provided he advances to and touches first base) when—

...

(b) He is touched by a pitched ball which he is not attempting to hit unless (1) The ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, or (2) The batter makes no attempt to avoid being touched by the ball; If the ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, it shall be called a strike, whether or not the batter tries to avoid the ball. If the ball is outside the strike zone when it touches the batter, it shall be called a ball if he makes no attempt to avoid being touched.

APPROVED RULING: When the batter is touched by a pitched ball which does not entitle him to first base, the ball is dead and no runner may advance.

You joke, but the Official Rules get promulgated every year in a book that's around 200 pages long, and while the World Umpires Association does send out an abstract highlighting all the key additions, subtractions and changes prior to spring training, that's still a lot of words to keep memorized and be able to recall at a moment's notice. For example, designated hitters aren't allowed to sit in the bullpen; who knew?

That said, that is one area that MLB has an edge over the NFL and other sports leagues; all umpires are considered full-time employees, so it's their job from January 1 to December 31 to live, breath and sleep the official rules. The NFL, on the other hand, still classifies all its officials as part-time, and as a result almost all of them have their own full-time jobs (or multiple part-time gigs) and they just work games on the weekends. It can lead to a lot of burnout.
 
You’ve got a bad ump on the field blowing a call. So what do you do? Call up Joe West and tell him “put your glasses on and squint into the TV” and he’s probably gonna blow it too even when he gets to see it slow mo ten times over again.

Umps just blew an obvious home run in the Reds/Dbacks game, ball bounced off a chair back onto the field and they called it a double, replay ump then confirmed it.
