Oh for sure me too on that one... Just wish the technology had given them more flight time.

90 seconds isn't a lot of flight time though is it?

I mean you can pop up look around and maybe scout a path further on but then you have to land again to recharge.

It's a proof of concept test. It uses about 350 watts during its brief flight. Perseverance's power source for the whole rover is 110 watts, although there are two lithium-ion rechargeable batteries to help during peak demands.

A watt is a measure of power, that is, energy per unit time (joules per second), so perhaps it would be more accurate to state the copter draws 350W of power during its flight time. Over 90 seconds, that's 31.5kJ or the energy required to heat 1 kilogram of water by 7.5 kelvin.

On March 13, 2021, the NASA Perseverance rover deployed/dropped some component (possibly a Mars Sample Cover) to the surface, finding a safe place to deploy the Ingenuity helicopter. This component is either Mars Samples Depot(cover) or another Perseverance part.
So soon Ingenuity will have its first flight?

I always wonder what an author like him would make of it?

I hope that NASA incorporates Living AI into the next mission to Mars or the Moon. Living AI really isn't a living thing but is more along the lines of a graphical interface of human who would report the status of the rover.

A more human touch would make missions more interesting as the data would be transmitted via the Living AI instead of lines of boring data to read through.

I'd like to see a fully autonomous rover and helicopter combination that would drive around do research and report back findings. Kind of like what @Dryson suggested but an AI that had the ability to function with minimal assistance and could self correct / learn on a limited scale.
