it is - unfortunateldy it doesn't do tiff-files but then i have adobe cc license. what is great though is that i now have a good answer if someone asks me for freeware alternative to photoshop (which happens a lot)

Some of the tools are a little different or carry a different name but you still work with layers, use filters, gradients, masks and brushes, and pretty much everything else in a photo manip tool. I switched to it when I no longer had access to CS and though I first did a lot of Googling for task-equivalences, I'm used to it now.
And having a local copy is a feature to me.

i have a local copy of the cc suite and i happily pay a few bucks a month for it. the first 'puter i used photoshop on was a brand new lc III+ (a whopping 36 mb ram and a gigantic 160 mb hard disk) - i'm accustomed to it.

Wasn't trying to convert you. I used Photoshop from version 5.0 to CS4 before it become unavailable to me, and since you stated you had never used GIMP, I was giving a brief account of the transition I experienced.
