I find the idea of a sequel interesting, though not necessarily a good idea, but if we're assuming none of the original cast would return, that greatly lessens my interest. Obviously no Robert Preston, and I have no idea whether any of the other cast members have any interest in revisiting this.

A sequel with all new characters though, or older versions of the original characters played by different actors isn't of much interest to me. I'm still annoyed with the ID4 sequel for recasting the President's daughter...which is just one of many things wrong with it, but still...

It's kind of a shame. The movie did do new and exciting things with CG back in the day, and a sequel that expanded upon the world established by the film could have been interesting, but I fear the window of opportunity has closed. Maybe comics or books or a videogame, where the actors aren't as much of a concern.

Robert Preston and Dan O'Herlihy have both passed away, and Chris Hebert (Louis) doesn't act anymore. Shouldn't be too difficult to get Lance Guest and Catherine Mary Stewart back. Have the new leads be their kids.

My understanding was that the rights are complicated and getting everyone who has a say on board has proven difficult. This was what I heard but I can't speak to the accuracy of it.

This is one of those properties that could probably be more successful as a television series than a movie. I have not seen the movie since I was a young teenager in the 80s but I remember it ending in a way that opened it up to "ongoing adventures".

Loved the film when younger, but it's not one I am longing to see a sequel or continuation.

This could go in any direction, as I see it.

A tarped Starfighter makes more sense than the Ecto-1. An Explorers type vibe.

A statement could be made about how video games then lifted one out of the doldrums. Here, I might have a power outage send kids out of the homes, away from first-person shooters, to look at stars—-with Lance Guest now an astronomer, lamenting on how games now turn us inward.

He takes the kids for a ride...a Brian May tour of our system now domed off...by a new firmament, shades of Stephen King.

Where the first film was about adventure...this might be more thoughtful.

I just listened to hos.com program 1277 and a leisurely TMP sequence something like The Grand Tour from Ron Miller could make an impact on lives. You see Lance’s family leave out with the fighter. The kids run an astronomy club...wondering when the ‘ban’ will be lifted from Earth. I want some of the feeling I had watching “Bless the Beasts and Children” or “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”

The kids look outward now...game consoles gathering dust...

I want a space film that is beautiful, like I hoped Valerian would be.

I love the original TLS and a sequel sounds like a good idea, but I don’t really want one.

Going to conventions in the Before Times, Nick Castle was doing the circuit mostly for his being the first actor to portray Michael Myers in "Halloween". But he also directed "The Last Starfighter". I was the only person in the line to see him for that with my "The Last Starfighter" picture in hand (thank goodness, there was nothing there to choose from otherwise) and he lit up when he saw I was a big fan. I obviously asked about the sequel and he said there were scripts and rumblings but did bring up there being rights issues making it tough. I don't recall if he said if he would even be attached to it or not, though.

Really a super nice guy, too.

Honestly, what the original film didn’t quite get right was the video gameness of the story. The game was just a gimmick there. The problem with the bus video game related movies and TV properties is the screenwriters don’t understand how games work and why people engage them beyond the obvious high score.

Considering its been almost 40 years, could be there Grand children! Timing could end up as a young teen maybe.

For me, a big part of the charm of the original was Robert Preston, and without him I just don't have a lot of strong feelings about the world they built.

Lance will be 61 this year, Catherine will be 62, there son/daughter would probably be around 40, so a grand child would be around 15 or so ( even better in the couple of years it will take for this to be filmed) So we could be looking at a Star League Academy type of movie, with Lance and Catherine being the commandants, or in charge of star league some how, maybe Catherine as an Ambassador to give her something to do.
And there children be starfighter pilots in there own right.
The rub would be how to do Xur, its been 40 years, be long gone. Maybe his son/daughter getting revenge?

Could do a kidnapping of the grand children and Lance as the Gunner, and Catherine as the Navigator steal a gunstar and go after them? Maybe go after them, and "Find" the original Gunstar in the course of the search and use it to kick ass?
Maybe Grig's what 10,000 children could help!

Xur could still be alive...we have no idea how long Rylans live.

Maybe. But I seem to remember Xur blowing up real good. Hard to survive that, at least not without consequences. If he did survive, he's probably scarred up, or missing parts. I could see him as a cyborg, and pissed off about it.

Playstation games are console games, I think you mean an arcade game.

Really, the original movie was groundbreaking for its use of CGI, but the story was just meh.

I'm pretty sure we see Xur flee to an escape pod after his underlings relieve him of command.

Correct; the head Rylosian explains this to Alex when asking him to stay and rebuild the Starfighter league. Of course, we don't really notice this because then we see Centauri (the interstellar Harold Hill himself) return from apparent death (he was merely dormant while his body repaired itself). But yes, the Ko-Dan Armada is gone but Xûr is still out there.

Haven't seen the film in close to thirty years. I honestly don't remember that part.
