Justice League official "Zack Snyder" cut on HBO Max

Just finished it. Watched it in two halves over two nights. My partner is the big DC fan, whereas I am probably more in the Marvel camp (although I don't really give that much of a hoot to be fair). We both agreed though - that was awesome. I hadn't followed anything to do with this production, so was quite unprepared for what an overhaul we were in for.

 

I did buy 2001: A Space Odyssey on 4K Blu-ray and that was really worth the double dip - I already had the Kubrick Collection on Blu-ray. Murder on the Orient Express (2017) is also reckoned to be an excellent example but Christie whodunnits are not really my thing. As you state, it seems some 4K Blu-ray releases are quite sub-par. I've only seen the Zack Snyder cut on streaming and it does look gorgeous so a 4K Blu-ray version might be worth shelling out for. Of course, there will be those who are going to complain if it remains in Academy ratio but if that is what the director intends, so be it.

 

In a couple of months. Regarding 4K, Snyder's JL will be as stunning as it is via HBOMax. That said, there are other 4K scans that are not necessarily superior to basic BluRay, especially some pre-1970 films.

 

So what is everyone favourite tune from this? I like Superman Rising pt. 2 and At the Speed of the Force

 

“Hallelujah” from the closing credits.

(I also quite like “Everybody Knows” in the original cut.)

 

I think I may have liked Steppenwolf's design better in the Whedon version but at least he here he doesn't call the mother boxes "mother". Though I guess supposedly there was some plot point in an early script where that would've been explained.

I'm not sure HDR color would make much a difference with the Snyder cut. Watching the Whedon version afterwards is like when Dorothy goes to Oz lol.

I like the song both from Cohen and covered by Concrete Blonde but that version in the theatrical cut, ooh, let's just say it's not for me.

 

Especially Superman's outfit, it looked completely black and white in the Snyder Cut!

I don’t see that 4:3 helps at home since most people’s screens just aren’t as tall as an IMAX screen. The effect is pretty much that of a miniseries or a TV cut from back in the day (though TV cuts tended to be everything and the kitchen sink without director-approved editing, like the one of Superman: The Movie).

 

The upcoming “ultimate” cut is 1.43:1 but I don’t know if that’s the whole movie

 

My quick, non-spoiler review:

If you ever wanted to know how Ayn Rand would write super heroes, then this movie is for you.

Atlas shrugs a lot in this film.

 

Is that a insult or a complement?

 

4 hours of my life that I'll never get back. It was better than the theatrical version, which doesn't surprise me. I've always maintained that a pure Snyder version or an actual Whedon version (where it was his vision from the start) would have to be better than the Frankenstein's monster of conflicting styles that we got in the theaters and I was right. However, at the end of the day, it was still a Zack Snyder movie, and this case, an ungodly long one.

 

Honestly I thought the Ayn Randness/Atlas Shrugitude was way more downplayed here compared to MoS & BvS (which was a major bugbear for me in those movies.) Hell, it actually came close to getting Superman right...not quite, but close.

 

I am NOT a fan of Rand’s objectivist philosophy. Take what you will from that.

 

Maybe if it had been a watchable length, I would have enjoyed it more. I will say that there just might be a halfway decent two and a half hour movie hiding in there somewhere.

 

My thoughts exactly. Which makes me suspicious if anyone making that criticism has actually watched the movie yet. But is basing it on preconceptions of his previous work.

 

I watched all four hours of it, and I stand by my statement regarding the Objectivist nature of the film.

 

Superman seemed perfectly fine in his movies. I don’t get the complaints

 

Perfectly fine? Zack Snyder's Superman is a whiny, emo, self-appointed martyr! Nothing about his personality says "hero."

As for ZSJL, I have the exact same problem with it that I had with BvS in Extended edition: You added a bunch of stuff and made it make more sense. What you didn't make it was better.

In fact, I never thought I'd see a movie that would make me like the theatrical release better, yet here comes the Snyder Cut. Now I understand that for all its faults, the Whedon cut at least has humor, which is a damn sight better than watching Zack Snyders Manic Depression (with SFX) for four hours.
