How could Robocop afford that house?

ED-209

So recently rewatched Robocop and the house he goes back to visit is a seriously nice house, how did he afford that on a cops salary? Was his wife an executive or something? Maybe he was a crooked cop that sold drugs on the side, but that's something he completely forgot for good. Maybe that's what Cain came from in the sequel, he filled the void that Murphy left when he died.

Perhaps Detroit was paying the cops what they should be paid? Which is why OCD wanted them gone.

The same way taxi drivers once could buy houses and fill them with kids. Or on Friends where 2 twentysomethings could afford a huge appartment in Manhattan.

It said so in the script.

Considering how Detroit was considered a crime infested Hellhole, it probably drove property values down.

Notice how it was still empty when Robocop went back there later? No one else was willing to buy the place.

I’ve always assumed they owned it, but yeah it could’ve been a company owned house. If that’s the case it explains it away.

I just assumed that OCP owned it. Plus Detroit is in such awful shape that it's being slowly bought by OCP and crime is so bad that the most reasonable solution is killer robots patrolling the city, so property values are probably pretty low.

Some cities actually have programs to supplement the payments of a house in order to get a police officer to move there into that community. It certainly is possible Detroit had degraded to the point where ALL OF DETROIT was considered on that level and to keep cops in the city they offered those types of things as well.
