However Voyager mentions DS9 a handful of times
Seems there is only backward referencing. For example, did TNG ever mention DS9 or a DS9 specific character? (I believe they introduced the Bajorans for DS9 purposes but was there ever an explicit reference?)
Both Quark and Bashir appear on TNG. (also, TNG introduced Cardassians as well)
Right. I remembered that crossover episode when I replied, I just thought it was a DS9 ep rather than a TNG one. Clearly I was wrong.
It's 2 episodes, actually. Quark appears in "Firstborn", Bashir in "Birthright (part I)".
OK, this time I have to admit that I had utterly forgotten about 'Firstborn'![]()
Do you really believe DS9 would have been unaware of Voyager's disappearance given DS9 was the last place anyone back home saw them... Odds are Defiant and a couple of runabouts were involved in the search for Voyager for a bit. The DS9 producers and writers just didn't put in a line about Voyager. My guess is that they received word of Voyager's absence from the Alpha Quadrant only when it became news that they were in the Delta Quadrant. I imagine ships went missing in action quite a bit during the wars, and Deep Space Nine was no stranger to having war torn weary souls aboard. News of a missing ship in action was no news to those guys.
Honestly, I could possibly see a whole episode with the Maquis blaming the Cardassians for it and Starfleet and the Cardassians blaming the Maquis for it. Of course no one would possibly guess the real reason because there would be no debris or energy signatures either way.Regardless, while I can understand not making a big deal about it at a time that Voyager was not going to be found, so making any reference ultimately meaningless, given that DS9 seemed to be a hub of Starfleet’s anti-Maquis actions, being so close to the Cardassian border, the DMZ, AND the Badlands, a few mentions of search efforts honestly would have fit in, at the least.
Or people in the AQ do care, and they always report missing ships in the Badlands...but it's not brought up because we don't see or hear every moment of the lives of these characters. Just because an episode didn't take time out to mention it, doesn't mean it wasn't something dealt with in-universe.It leaves the audience with two interpretations - no one in the Alpha Quadrant cares, or Starfleet ships going missing in the Badlands is common enough, no one reports on it. Neither is a particularly favorable interpretation for Starfleet proper.
Starfleet ships going missing is nothing new, and I can't imagine unless it impacted on individual crew members (with loved ones, or they served on that ship, etc) would it be something worthy of being mentioned as a random occurrence.
DS9 did a whole episode featuring a VOY character ("Dr. Bashir, I Presume") and gave Tuvok a mirror universe cameo. ("Through the Looking Glass")Voyager never mentioned/referenced on DS9
